5 The different phases in the anger cycle Trigger phase During this phase we perceive a threat or a loss and our body prepares to respond and we change from normal/adaptive state into stressed state. Each person s trigger phase differs due to environment or thought processes Escalation phase In the escalation phase, there is the progressive appearance of the anger response. In this phase, our body prepares for a crisis after perceiving the trigger. This preparation is mostly physical, and is manifested through symptoms like rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and raised blood pressure.

6 The crisis phase The escalation phase is progressive and anger reaches its peak. Our body is in full alert prepared to take action in response to the trigger. During this phase logic and rationality is limited or impaired because anger takes over and may cause serious danger to the individual or to others

7 The recovery and depression phase This phase happens when anger has been spent or at least controlled. Reasoning and awareness returns. But inappropriate intervention can re-ignite anger Recovery phase Depression phase During depression phase physical vital signs and faculties return to normal. Awareness of what happened is assessed and there may be guilt, embarrassment, regret and depression

8 Understanding fight or flight The Fight or Flight theory described by Walter Cannon is about how people react to a perceived threat. People either aggress (fight) or withdraw (flight). This instinct is about survival. Bodily manifestation of fight or flight is indicated by release of hormones such as adrenaline, and cortisol, which results in increased energy, heart rate etc. If we understand the fight or flight instinct helps us understand the dynamics of our anger response.

9 Understanding the fight or flight instinct Anger is a natural response and is a result of perceived harm to self either physical or emotional. Our rational side is overtaken by our survival instinct. This survival instinct results in aggressiveness which is opposite to deliberate rational response. Hence conscious awareness and control is needed so that we are not overpowered.

10 Common myths about anger Anger is a bad emotion Our emotions are instinctual reactions and some anger is good if it is about injustice, discrimination or abuse. How we react with anger can be judged as positive or negative Anger needs to be unleashed to go away Expressing anger in physical or verbally aggressive ways is not the way to unleash anger. It needs to be tempered with rational forethought. Ignoring anger will make it go away Emotions don t disappear if ignored only shelved temporarily. It can emerge as a physical symptom or get projected to another person in future. It is best to acknowledge it but not aggressively.
