5 BORDERNETwork ISSUE NEWSLETTER Dear BORDERNETwork partners, national and international experts, dear colleagues, dear reader, We are glad to inform you that the project advances in its second year of implementation, intensive with exchange, competence building and training events under various thematic areas. All of them are united by the effort to improve the links between HIV and STI prevention, diagnostic and therapy and to produce synergies from the multidisciplinary cooperation across 5 model regions in Europe. Herewith we offer you an overview on the most recent developments and invite you to share the information about the oncoming events in 2011 in your regions. BORDERNETwork NEWSLETTER ISSUE Se c o nd Pro je c t Co mmitte e Me e ting (WP1) Berlin The second steering committee meeting of the project took place in Berlin on March 10 and 11, The project coordinator SPI, Work Package Leading partners and selected associated partners came together in Berlin in order to present, discuss and assess the stage of progress of the individual work packages, review the completion of the most relevant milestones and deliverables and preparation for the project s interim report. The tasks of project dissemination and evaluation were additionally discussed. Inte rnatio nal Capac ity Building POL Training Se minar (WP8) Bucharest In the frame of the community based participatory prevention among migrant and ethnic minority groups (WP8) a second important meeting took place, which is one of the project s Deliverables (D9). The 2 days training seminar in the method POL (Popular Opinion Leader) for Participatory Communitybased HIV/STI Prevention for ethnic minorities (Roma) and migrant groups took place on March 28 till 30, 2011 in Bucharest. Hosted by the Romanian partner ARAS, the training was facilitated by Radostina Antonova and Boyan Vasilev from the The participants of the training represented a wide range of different professional backgrounds, e.g. psychologists, doctors, social workers and nurses, currently working as HIV/STI prevention community based workers, cultural mediators, community health workers, social assistants and youth prevention worker. In total 20 participants from 7 EU and 2 NON EU countries representing 8 civil society organizations and the coordinator SPI attended the training.next build up training on the method of POL and other proved effective community based prevention methods will follow in November 2011 in Vienna.

Project. workshop addresses HIVtreatment experts and medical specialists from various BORDERNETwo rk at the Euro pe an HIV Co nfe re nc e 2011 in Esto nia (WP6) The Satellite Workshop takes place in 26 May 2011, 4 8PM, Nokia Concert Hall, Tallinn, Estonia. For more detailed agenda please visit the treatment settings and will be attended by practitioners from Germany, Estonia, Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine. A second medical The European HIV Conference 2011 HIV in European Region Unity and Diversity ; will be held in Tallinn, Estonia, from 25th to 27th of May, conference Web site at n/related events/the BORDERNETwork project workshop will follow in Rostock, Germany in November 2011, organized jointly by MAT, the Medical University in Rostock and AIDS Hilfe Potsdam. The National Institute for Health Development, Estonia, BORDERNETwork NEWSLETTER ISSUE organises jointly with SPI Forschung a BORDERNETwork Satellite Workshop to discuss and share experiences in improving access to early diagnostic of HIV/STI for key populations and referral to treatment services. Alongside with presentation of first BORDERNETwork assessment findings in that area and examples of good practice, several related topics will be tackled. Further international speakers at the Satellite represent ECDC, WHO Regional Office for Me dic al Training Wo rksho p and Exc hange Visit o n HIV and He patitis B/ C Co - infe c tio ns (WP7) Potsdam In the frame of the cooperation on management of HIV and Co infections, AIDS Hilfe Potsdam, lead partner of WP7 conducted a stocktaking survey in 7 countries (6 EU and 1 NON EU) on country specific medical conditions in diagnostic and treatment of HIV and Hepatitis B/C Coinfections. In a next step a 3 days medical workshop will be held in June 27 29, 2011 in Potsdam, Germany. The Cro ss- bo rde r Yo uth Film Days in Swine münde, Po land (WP9) The German Polish BORDERNETwork model region organises a next serie of youth HIV prevention events.
8 BORDERNETwork NEWSLETTER ISSUE The cross border Youth Film Days (YFD) on the topic of Love, Sexuality, Contraception and AIDS will be hosted on June 9, 2011 by the town of Swinemünde in Poland. Total of to 20 years old students from 10 schools, both secondary and vocational schools, together with teachers, educators and social workers will attend the event. The organising committee includes all important relevant partners in the region: SPWSZ, Stettin, the city health authority in Swinemünde, the civil society organisations DADU and TADA, MAT and the public health office Anklam from Germany. Pro je c t s e xte rnal Evaluatio n (WP3) The tender for external evaluator of the project has been successfully completed. BORDERNETwork is glad to present to the project s network and to the further stakeholders Prof. Dr. Sibylle Nideröst. Representing the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, School of Social Work she will conduct the external evaluation between May 2011 and August Prof. Dr. Sibylle Nideröst studied sociology, social work and constitutional law at the University of Zurich, Switzerland and received a PhD in sociology in Since 2009, she is a full professor at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, School of Social Work, in Olten. She is the responsible of the research foci ʺpeople in the context of HIV/AIDSʺ of the Institute Integration and Participation. Over the last 10 years, she realized numerous qualitative and quantitative research projects, in cooperation with European partners (EUROSUPPORT Studies 4 and 5) as well as nationwide. What has be e n up in the ne two rk o ve r the summe r? Cro ss-bo rde r c o o pe ratio n (WP4) In July 2011 Austrian and Slovak Partners (Model Region III) met in Vienna. Present were collaborators of PRIMA, Bratislava, AHW and SOPHIE A Place of Education, Vienna. The main topics of exchange were HIV/STI prevention among MSM, the work in the gay scene in Vienna and the services for sex workers. The partners made an on site visit to the premises of SOPHIE and got impressions from the outreach work and the other services offered there. 10 BORDERNETwork NEWSLETTER ISSUE In September 2011 Estonian and Latvian partners (Model Region IV) met in Riga.Two colleagues from Estonian National Institute for Health Development visited Latvia s Association for Family Planning and Sexual Health Papardes zieds and Infectology Center of Latvia. The meetings included also on site visits to low threshold VCT centres located in Kuldiga and a drug treatment and rehabilitation house. Besides the Latvian co ordinator of the biobehavioural surveillance among sex workers from the AIDS Counselling Centre in Riga had a great opportunity to get acquainted with the Estonian experience, as the survey s data collection has already been successfully completed in Tallinn. Photo: Ms Inga Bulmistre, the specialist of AIDS Counselling Centre introduces Estonian colleagues with the clients registration system In October 2011 cross border working meeting (Model Region I) of German (MAT, Rostock) and Polish (SPWSZ, Stettin) partners took place in Stettin (PL).Main topics of discussion were the oncoming two expert workshops in Rostock in November (read more below), the conduction of pilot communication trainings with medical students at the University of Rostock and the train the trainers courses (WP4). Inte rgrate d bio - be havio ural surve illanc e amo ng Se x Wo rke rs (WP5) The field phase of the international second generation sentinel surveillance among sex workers in 6 EU capital cities and one border area is close to an end. 211 sex workers were recruited for the survey in Tallinn, in Bratislava and Bucharest 200 each, in Sofia, 120 female and 80 male sex workers. In Riga 100 respondents have been reached so far, the data collection has just been completed. The field phase in the last survey location Berlin/Brandenburg/Polish border area will be prolonged till March 2012, due to structural difficulties in the recruitment. Therefore the data collected in Germany and Poland will not be part of the first international comparative assessment. Pilo ting HIV/ STI Diagno stic fo r ke y vulne rable gro ups (WP6) In the period between June and December 2011 the partners collaborating under BORDERNETwork WP6, who are at same time prevention and diagnostic service providers, have the task to conduct a pilot HIV/STIs diagnostic campaign among selected most at risk group according to the local contexts. Thus in Estonia, partner notification and referral to STI services is being offered for IDUs and their sexual partners. In Latvia, male partners of female sex workers are addressed with STI testing offers (HIV, HCV, HBsAg, Syphilis). In Bulgaria male sex workers from marginalised Roma community are reached with diagnostic offers for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea. In Germany female sex workers in the German Polish border area will be offered Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea testing also. In Romania and Slovak Republic low threshold HIV/STI testing (mobile ambulance) is offered to i.d. SWs and their partners and to homeless people. 11 diagnostic will be increased for the local community of young people and for women working in sex business. A spe c ial pilo t MSM c ampaign is c o nduc te d in Vie nna What e lse is o n BORDERNETwo rk s age nda by the e nd o f 2011 migrants/ethnic minorities (WP8). Three effective European and national models (A&M, PaKoMi, POL) will be illuminated in interactive workshops. For more information: s.vassileva@hesed.bg and lex@aids.at BORDERNETwork NEWSLETTER ISSUE In the frame of WP 6 Aids Hilfe Vienna had started already in June 2011 outreach counseling and testing offer for MSM. The services were advertized with flyers, distributed in the gay scene, which were well accepted. Still the need for more advertisement and information was seen and therefore a new campaign is launched in November. Additionally to the flyers, special posters, matches, condoms, internet buttons and beer coasters will be disseminated. The slogan of the campaign Nimm es selbst in die Hand. Kommst Du? (in English Take it in your Hand ) stands in German also for the initiative to take the responsibility and should encourage the target group to take care of themselves and to be aware of one s own HIV status. The aim of this meeting is to present the first results from the STI Sentinel surveillance in the four survey countries Austria, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovak Republic.
