CHAPTER 1 Introduction to Ayurveda and Elemental Nature sm ELEMENTAL NATURE SM PHILOSOPHY is a tool that allows us to understand how to create balance for our guests. Elemental Nature sm is based on the science of Ayurveda. Ayur means life Veda means knowledge NOTES 4 elemental nature sm participant guide aveda corp all rights reserved aveda education date revised:
CHAPTER 1 Introduction to Ayurveda and Elemental Nature sm What practices are used in the healing tradition of ayurveda to achieve and maintain wellness? 5
CHAPTER 1 Introduction to Ayurveda and Elemental Nature sm AYURVEDA TELLS US THAT THE SPIRIT OF FIVE NATURAL ELEMENTS ARE TO BE FOUND IN ALL LIVING THINGS, INCLUDING YOU. The balance of these elements is reflected in the skin. When skin concerns surface, it could be a signal that an element needs to be balanced. Restoring balance- through appropriately diagnosed skin care products, a healthy diet and regular wellness activities- results in healthylooking radiant skin. 6 elemental nature sm participant guide aveda corp all rights reserved aveda education date revised:
CHAPTER 2 Overview of the Elements 7
CHAPTER 2 Overview of the Elements At the core of the Elemental Nature sm Philosophy is balancing the five elements. The five elements exist within all of us. Depending on our diet, lifestyle, job, relationships, or any other part of our experience, any of the five elements can increase within our body and cause an imbalance. The cause of the imbalance is based on the principle like qualities increase like. So if a person eats a lot of heavy processed foods, the elements of water/earth which are heavy would increase and become imbalanced. The imbalances are exhibited through various mind/body conditions as well as skin conditions. 8 elemental nature sm participant guide aveda corp all rights reserved aveda education date revised:

CHAPTER 2 Overview of the Elements INFINITY/AIR OVERVIEW Infinity is the open expanse of the universe. Infinity is responsible for expansion in the body such as expansion of the lungs, the expansion of capillaries and arteries and the expansion and contraction of muscles. The element of Air represents movement. Air is responsible for all movement in the body including the movement of air in and out of the lungs, the movement of food through the digestive tract and the transportation of nutrients into the cells and waste out of the cells. Air controls the nervous system and muscular systems. Together, Air and Infinity control activity and vitality. BALANCING THE SKIN Nourishment is a key word in balancing Infinity/Air Nature skin. Skin is depleted of nutrients, depleted of moisture and natural sebaceous oils. THE FIVE SENSES Infinity is linked to the sense of sound. The Air element is linked to the sense of touch. MIND/BODY CONDITIONS Nervousness/Anxiety Excessive Talking Dry, cracked lips Skin and body feel cold Stiff joints Digestive problems Insomnia Hair is dry or has a flaky, dry dandruff condition SKIN CONDITIONS Dryness Dehydration Flakiness Fine Lines Wrinkles Lack of Firmness Occasional Dullness 10 elemental nature sm participant guide aveda corp all rights reserved aveda education date revised:

CHAPTER 2 Overview of the Elements FIRE OVERVIEW Fire creates heat which creates changes or transformation. Thus, Fire is responsible for all transformations in the body. The most important function is digestion or the transformation of food into energy. In addition, Fire is responsible for body temperature, the coloration of the skin, as well as intellectual and visual perceptions. In general, Fire regulates chemical, physical and mental transformations. BALANCING THE SKIN To create balance for Fire skin, we focus on soothing and cooling products. Because Fire also is responsible for discoloration on the skin, products are often focused on evening skin tone and texture. THE FIVE SENSES MIND/BODY CONDITIONS Anger Irritation Frustration Overly aggressive or judgmental Indigestion Vision Problems SKIN CONDITIONS Sensitivity Redness Reactivity Hyperpigmentation/Freckles Discoloration Pink undertones even if no sensitivity is present Fire is linked to the sense of sight. 12 elemental nature sm participant guide aveda corp all rights reserved aveda education date revised:

CHAPTER 2 Overview of the Elements WATER/EARTH OVERVIEW Water is the lubricating and connecting energy. The Water element lubricates joints, the digestive tract and the respiratory tract. The energy of water helps to hold the body together. It is the glue that governs the interaction of all five elements. It also governs our relationships and connections to others. The element of Earth is solid and stable. Earth is responsible for the structure and stability of the body. Earth gives mass to the bones, muscles and organs as well as creating a protective layer around the organs, brain and spinal cord. Because of its heaviness, it creates grounding sensations in the mind. BALANCING THE SKIN To balance a Water/Earth skin, products focus on deep cleansing and purifying. THE FIVE SENSES MIND/BODY CONDITIONS Lack of energy Lack of motivation Feelings of sadness Fluid retention Weight gain Desire to sleep for long periods Hair is thick and oily; true dandruff condition with large, oily flakes SKIN CONDITIONS Oiliness No or few wrinkles Larger pores Blackheads Ance/blemishes Combination skin Water is linked to the sense of taste. The Earth element is linked to the sense of smell. 14 elemental nature sm participant guide aveda corp all rights reserved aveda education date revised:

CHAPTER 3 Aveda Skin Care Systems AVEDA PRESCRIBES ELEMENTAL NATURE SM WELLNESS RITUALS in combination with each skin care system to maximize benefits and achieve balance for our guests. BALANCED NATURES begin with 1-2 breathing Breathe deeply taking twice as long to exhale as you did to inhale. Counting silently is a good way to measure this. Practice this technique for a minimum of 10 full breaths every day. balanced eating The right foods can help you maintain balance. So consider increasing your intake of fresh, whole, organic fruits and vegetables while reducing the amount of processed foods you eat. A great first step might be cooking fresh foods at home at least four times a week. open your senses with self-massage When your elements are wellbalanced all of your senses are open and engaged. To support this state of balance consider getting a massage no less that once every two months. Pay attention to the smell of essential oils, the soothing sound of music and the therapist s touch. 25
