Essential Oils
Where essential oils come from Found in plants, shrubs, trees, Come from roots, seeds, leaves, stem, bark, flower, peel, etc. Plants produce them to: prevent attack from herbivores, insects, bacteria, fungus, attract pollinators, heal wounds on the plant, act as energy reserve, prevent other plants from growing nearby, and to protect from dehydration. They have been compared to "the blood of the plant".
Essential oils and the human body Enter by digestion, inhalation, or absorption Penetrate cell membranes because they are lipids (fats), which is the same thing cell membranes are made of. The molecules of essential oils are small, so they are able to penetrate cells. The chemical structure of essential oils is similar enough to that which is found in human cells and tissues, which enables them to be readily accepted by the body. Because of their complexity, essential oils do not disturb the body's natural balance. If one constituent exerts too strong an effect, another may counteract it. Synthetic chemicals usually only have one action, which often disrupts homeostasis. (Blood thinners) The gland that stores memories of fear or trauma is the amygdala. Only odor or fragrance stimulation has a profound effect on triggering a response from the amygdala.
Extraction Different plants require different methods of extraction, depending on their chemical properties. The oldest methods of extraction are: mixing the crushed plant material with other fats, or soaking in alcohol or boiling water. The most common method used today is steam distillation. The highest quality oils come from producers who use lower temperature and pressure over a longer period of time and do not "redistill" the plant.
Constituents If a plant is not distilled long enough, many of the constituents are missing from the oil. For example, cypress oil takes hours to distill properly and contain all its components, but most distilleries do 2 hours at higher temperature and pressure. That cypress oil will be of poorer quality than the slow-distilled one and will be missing therapeutic components. Only the lighter components of herbs actually make it through he distillation process. Terpenes have a fresh, woody odor, analgesic, hormone balancing, hypertensive and inhibit the accumulation of toxins. Sesquiterpenes pass through the blood brain barrier, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, immune stimulant, liver and glandular stimulant. Found in many of the "biblical oils" such as frankincense, myrrh, hyssop, etc. Phenols- need to be diluted - feel HOT. Stimulate immune and nervous systems, antiseptic, antibacterial. Esters- calming, soothing, relaxing, euphoric Aldehydes- sedating, anti-infectious to nervous system, can be caustic to the skin- rashes Ketones- encourage wound healing, oxygenating, dissolves mucus, can be a neurotoxin unless diluted, gets the cell to start working again.
Frequency To get a fuller understanding of how essential oils operate, it is interesting to have a discussion on frequency. Frequency is the measurable rate of electrical energy flow that is constant between any two points. Average frequency of healthy human body during the day is MHz. When the frequency drops, the immune system is compromised. Substances of higher frequencies can destroy or change substances of lower frequencies.
Frequency of diseases Human brain MHz Human body MHz Cold symptoms- start at 58 MHz Flu Symptoms- 57 MHz Candida (thrush) takes hold- 55 MHz Cancer- 42 MHz Death- begins at 25 MHz If the frequency between the left and right lobes of the brain vary by more than 3 MHz a headache will begin. If it varies by more than 10 MHz, a substantial migraine type headache ensues.
Frequencies of foods, herbs, etc. Processed/canned food: o MHz Fresh produce: up to 15 MHz Dry Herbs: MHz Fresh Herbs: MHz Essential Oils: MHz Each EO has its signature frequency. Basil is 52, Rose is 320.
Lower frequency oils- Physical problems Midrange frequency oils- help with emotional problems Higher frequency oils- address the spiritual
The correct frequency for each essential oil is affected by the conditions under which the crops grow. If there is a bad year weather-wise, the crops won't reach their full potential and an oil with a lower frequency is produced. There is an international watchdog for the quality of essential oils called AFNOR. Oils with too low of frequency or that are in any way diluted will not get the seal of approval fom AFNOR.
Single oils Single oils will last virtually forever if kept in a cool, dark place and are uncontaminated. Dark glass is often used to store them.
