2 Pain and inflammation can stem from acute injuries like a sprained ankle or from more chronic conditions, like arthritis. Pain and inflammation can keep you up at night, make it uncomfortable to do the things you love to do and you may find yourself popping anti-inflammatories to quell the pain and get back to doing what you love to do. But here s the catch most over the counter anti inflammatories and pain killers have some nasty side effects. There are some GREAT natural alternatives that are both effective and will support your whole body in addition to alleviating your pain and inflammation. That s what this free report is all about. But before we get to the natural alternatives lets take a moment to illustrate why natural alternatives are better for you. Acetaminophen (a.k.a. Tylenol) is the most popular over-the-counter pain medication used worldwide. However, in England, it is known to be the leading cause of liver failure requiring transplants. This is because acetaminophen is primarily metabolized by the liver, and if the liver fails to successfully remove all these by-products, and if they build-up to a critical level, then a toxic compound called NAPQI can result and cause liver failure (Tylenol, 2015). Advil and Aleve are common anti-inflammatories that belong to a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is well documented that NSAIDs can result in ulcers in both the stomach and the intestines. In addition to this NSAIDs can actually impair the healing process in acute injuries. NSAIDs specifically impair the process of tendon-to-bone healing and they impair the healing of broken bones (Baily Su, 2013). For these reasons (and others) many people who are concerned about their health are looking for natural ways to manage pain and inflammation. Here at Intrinsi, we see all types of injuries, aches, and chronic pain conditions. Below are 4 of the best widely found natural remedies that we ve tried and tested, and frequently recommend to our clients. 1. Magnesium is fantastic for muscles aches, cramps, and spasms. It s a natural muscle relaxant. It is also useful for headaches, and for promoting a good night s sleep. To get magnesium into your body you can take an epsom salt bath (which contains magnesium) 2
3 but most often we recommend a tablet, liquid, or powder supplement. As with most things, in order for it to be effective you have to make sure you choose a quality product with a high enough potency this is crucial. Most folks run to their grocery store and might not have much success with natural solutions because unfortunately, many of these products either aren t strong enough or are of lower quality. So even if Magnesium hasn t worked for you in the past we d suggest you give it another try and follow 3 simple guidelines: a. Choose a magnesium supplement containing multiple forms/compounds of magnesium. This will help your body more readily absorb and use the magnesium for maximum results and relief. This will also avoid the possibility of loose stools (which is a side effect of taking too much magnesium or just not absorbing the magnesium properly). We keep a few different magnesium formulations on hand at Intrinsi and they contain compounds such as magnesium glycinate, magnesium aspartate, magnesium malate, magnesium ascorbate, and magnesium citrate. One of our formulations is made in a laboratory (as are most supplements), and the other is made from organic beets and can be easier for sensitive individuals to absorb. b. Take a dosage that s effective for your body. This may take a little trial and error based on your size, your pain level, and your ability to absorb the magnesium. We recommend beginning with a dosage of about 300 mg, and taking a second dosage a few hours later if needed. Some professionals recommend taking up to 1000 mg of magnesium per day. c. Take your magnesium supplement or your epsom salt bath in the evening. Magnesium is a mineral that is best taken in the evening before bed. It relaxes the muscles and is required for melatonin production, helping you sleep. 2. Curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory. It can help achy joints, old injuries, new injuries, arthritis and more. Over 30 years of research demonstrates its effectiveness in treating a plethora of pro-inflammatory diseases (Sahdeo Prasad, 2014). Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric root, and for maximum effectiveness we recommend taking a supplement containing isolated curcumin as you d have to ingest over 10 times as much turmeric to obtain similar results. 3
4 Purchase a curcumin supplement that is active or in a bioavailable state as these forms will enter the bloodstream far more readily. There are a few different ways to make curcumin bioavailable such as pairing it with piprine (a compound found in black pepper), using a nano emulsion to break the curcumin into small highly soluble particles, and employing liposomal encapsulation which again increases solubility in the body (Sahdeo Prasad, 2014). Given all these factors, choosing a reliable curcumin supplement can be a bit confusing, and dosage recommendation will be highly dependent on the bioavailability of the supplement. At Intrinsi, we recommend a product called Curcumin Active produced by a local Calgary company called Advanced Orthomolecular Research (A.O.R.). Please note that although curcumin is highly effective at reducing pain and inflammation, results do take 1-2 weeks to reach their full height. 3. Omega-3 fish oil is similar to curcumin in that it is a wonderful allpurpose anti-inflammatory. It can help you control old joint pain, or reduce the duration and intensity of pain associated with a new injury. Omega-3 s might be a common supplement, but many people don t think to take it when they ve suffered a case of whiplash (for example) but it s a safe natural way to calm any injury. Because there has been so much research on the wide range of benefits that omega-3s offer against a plethora of disease, we often recommend taking it with your daily multivitamin whether you are in pain or not. This information may come as no surprise, and perhaps you already take a daily omega supplement - but as they say the devil s in the details. When choosing a truly effective omega-3 supplement there are 3 main factors to consider: a. Make sure your supplement contains high concentrations of EPA and DHA (long chain omega-3 s). Short chain omega-3 s (like ALA) have less potent health benefits. A high quality oil will contain about 30% (or higher) long chain omega-3 s overall. b. Take a therapeutic dosage i.e. a dosage high enough to give you real results. Most research studies use 2000 to 5000 mg of long chain (EPA and/or DHA) omega-3s per day. Read the label on your omega-3 supplement and take an adequate amount! Remember, one teaspoon of fish oil may only contain 500 mg of EPA+DHA which means that you d need to take at least 4 teaspoons per day to obtain a therapeutic dose. 4
5 c. Choose an omega-3 supplement derived from a clean source. The news is true, our oceans are polluted and many fish stocks contain high levels of mercury and other heavy metals, making it hard to choose a safe omega-3 fish oil supplement. Since most heavy metals build up in large fish like tuna a good way to avoid heavy metals is to purchase a fish oil derived from small fish like anchovies and sardines. 4. Homeopathic Arnica is a perfect fit for any accident or injury that results in physical trauma consisting of bruising, tissue damage, broken blood vessels, and swelling. The legendary efficacy of homeopathic Arnica has made it the choice of many professional athletes and sports teams. However, the scientific effectiveness of homeopathic remedies is often doubted. Regardless, there are studies that show statistically significant results supporting the use of homeopathic remedies. For example a double-blind 2006 study using homeopathic arnica with plastic surgery patients, reported a statistically significant reduction of bruising (as measured by specific computer software) (Seely BM, 2006). Homeopathic remedies are highly affordable and have no contraindications, and are therefore a good choice for a wide variety of people. We recommend homeopathic arnica for all types of falls, knocks, and accidents. We also recommend arnica for surgeries and childbirth. For best results, try to take arnica as soon as possible post injury. People commonly attribute reduced pain and swelling, as well as faster healing times to the therapeutic use of homeopathic arnica. References Baily Su, J. P. (2013).
