This is the place. This is the moment. This is the turning point. Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine Educating naturopathic doctors for over 40 years
The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine is at a Turning Point. From a certain point onward there is no longer turning back. That point must be reached. Seneca the Younger, 4 BC 65 AD Never before has the potential for longer, healthier lives been as possible. Science has made unprecedented strides in understanding the human body, its relationship to our environment, and the complex factors that contribute to wellness. We have arrived at the point where convention meets invention. Where medicine is understood to include the natural world. Where naturopathic doctors collaborate with the full range of health care professionals to empower health for all Canadians for all people. CCNM is poised to be the driving force for naturopathic medicine to take its rightful place as a full partner in the health care system. CCNM Turning Point Campaign 1
Changing Health Care Outcomes. Changing the Health Care System. Imagine a world where disease and illness are prevented. A world where chronic conditions can be effectively managed without invasive interventions. Where the individual s needs are addressed by considering the whole person and the root causes of illness, not just the symptoms. A world where an integrative approach to health care is the norm. That is our vision. A diagnosis of stage 4 cancer was the impetus for my seeking out a naturopathic doctor. I have continually surpassed the expectations of my oncology team. I withstood an aggressive chemotherapy regimen remarkably well, due to the effects of integrated, evidence-based treatments that included high-dose intravenous Vitamin C. In fact, I was able to ride my bike to the chemotherapy throughout five months of treatment. Trust me, nothing turns heads like showing up for chemo with a bike helmet under your arm! I hope that the complementarity of the two approaches will be more fully recognized by the conventional medical community. In particular, I hope for equitable access to naturopathic medicine for all Canadians. KATHY HIPFNER BOUCHER Patient of naturopathic medicine CCNM is uniquely qualified to expand the impact of naturopathic medicine to improve lives through: Research & Innovation Leadership in Education Collaboration & Connection The $7 million Turning Point Campaign for CCNM will empower the role and impact of naturopathic medicine in Canada and around the world. 2 CCNM Turning Point Campaign CCNM Turning Point Campaign 3
We ve travelled a great distance. 1st CCNM is the first and only naturopathic program in Canada to offer a four-year Doctor of Naturopathy degree. Naturopathic practice is regulated under provincial law in five jurisdictions: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Nova Scotia legislation provides title protection for naturopathic doctors. Regulation opens the door to more collaborative health care initiatives. The Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre is the first cancer care and research centre of its kind in Central and Eastern Canada. It is a catalyst for the integration of naturopathic approaches with traditional cancer care, and has established collaborations with 20-plus cancer-related organizations to date including oncologists and other health care practitioners, hospitals, researchers, advocacy groups to better serve cancer patients. The CCNM Brampton Naturopathic Teaching Clinic at Brampton Civic Hospital, the first naturopathic teaching clinic in a hospital setting in Canada, is operated in collaboration with the William Osler Health System. The teaching clinic serves more than 700 patients a month and stands as another example of how naturopathic medicine can contribute to better health outcomes and lower health care costs by working collaboratively within the medical community. 25,000 World Leader CCNM s on-site teaching clinic, the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic, is the largest naturopathic teaching clinic in North America providing more than 25,000 patient visits per year. CCNM also operates satellite clinics in nine community health centres across the Greater Toronto Area. CCNM s Department of Research is an acknowledged world leader in advancing our understanding of complementary and naturopathic medicine. Our research has appeared in leading peer-reviewed journals including the Canadian Medical Association Journal, The Lancet and the British Medical Journal. 4 CCNM Turning Point Campaign CCNM Turning Point Campaign 5
Imagine where we ll go from here. With more research. There is increasing recognition of the value of naturopathic medicine. There is a growing demand for more evidence-driven research to support existing therapies and develop new approaches to improving wellness. The field cannot grow without explicit efforts to apply rigorous research in the pursuit of treatment options. It may have surprised people when CCNM opened the Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre when you consider we are an educational institution. They did not foresee the degree to which it would impact the profession and the College. The Centre has enhanced the College s profile and reputation, and opened people s eyes to the potential of naturopathic medicine. Just think what we could do with more research and more partnerships like this. Dr. Barbara Weiss, ND Board Member, OICC Foundation and Past Chair, CCNM Board of Governors With more qualified CCNM-trained naturopathic doctors. The profession needs more CCNM-trained naturopathic doctors. More doctors mean more opportunities to deliver naturopathic care, improve health care outcomes and strengthen the impact of the profession. Attracting students to the profession, providing an exceptional experience while attending CCNM, and supporting them as they launch their careers, are at the core of our mission. With more collaboration. We will pursue more opportunities to work collaboratively with the health care community so we can realize the full potential of integrative naturopathic medicine. Not only will we help more people, we will strengthen the health care system. Something must be done to alleviate the growing burden on health care and the obvious answer is prevention of illness. More people taking charge of their health by proactively working with naturopathic doctors means improved health care outcomes and lower costs. 6 CCNM Turning Point Campaign CCNM Turning Point Campaign 7
CCNM Turning Point Campaign Transforming Health. Transforming Lives. Research & Innovation Leadership in Education Collaboration & Connection $3 million $2 million $2 million 8 CCNM Turning Point Campaign CCNM Turning Point Campaign 9
Research & Innovation $3 million CCNM will consolidate its position as a global leader in research for complementary medical practices by establishing a new innovation hub. We will look towards the future and embed a culture of curiosity, innovation and academic rigour. The results of these initiatives will have far-reaching consequences for the field of naturopathic medicine in Canada and around the world. The innovation hub will include: I chose to relocate to Canada from the U.S. because of CCNM s reputation for excellence in research. I studied biomedical engineering and published papers myself so I had high expectations in this area. I chose to move out of the biomed field and into naturopathic medicine because it was important to me to explore a variety of approaches to health care from an unbiased perspective. I m excited for the opportunity to expand the contribution CCNM can make in the growing area of research and I think the College is poised to be at the forefront of the coming change in health care. Shreya Soni Class of 2018 Research Chairs CCNM will fund chairs in research to explore key areas of inquiry such as Health Technology, Health Economics, and Chronic Disease Management. Naturopathic Medicine Outcomes Study A dedicated team will lead the design and implementation of an ambitious project to record and analyze the impact of naturopathic treatments on treating and preventing illness and promoting health. Student Innovation Fund CCNM will enhance our culture of curiosity and enrich the student experience through student-initiated research projects that contribute to evidence-based knowledge. CCNM Ideas Incubator Breaking out of routine and providing the space for discovery will drive our own Ideas Incubator for alumni. Innovations are generated when great minds come together with no agenda but to be creative. We will provide the opportunity to cultivate ideas that could lead to meaningful initiatives for the College and the profession. Electronic Medical Records Establishing the means by which to gather and share data will support outcomes-based research and ease the collaboration among health care providers for patients in our clinics. Researcher in Residence CCNM will create a position to coordinate, document, synthesize and communicate the College s research. 10 CCNM Turning Point Campaign CCNM Turning Point Campaign 11
Leadership in Education $2 million As the only educational institution in Canada to offer a Doctor of Naturopathy degree, CCNM stands as the model for best practice standards in education. Our goal is to deliver an enriched, rigorous and engaging educational experience so that our students can pursue their professional calling with confidence. Areas of focus include: CCNM is filled with an amazing diversity of students. There are research scientists, medical doctors, even an opera singer. I came to the field from a career in corporate law. Many also come from different countries and cultures. So the conversations we have as colleagues spark interesting areas of inquiry and open new pathways of understanding. I m from Pakistan and when I talked about fasting not as deprivation but celebration, it was a different way of looking at it for many. Opportunities for these diverse perspectives to come together are very important for innovation and realizing the full power of this community. As ad Hamid Class of 2017 Campus Transformation Encounter Spaces for students and faculty to connect, socialize, and exchange ideas Research Labs such as a Medical Simulation Room and a Patient Research Centre E-learning Platform to facilitate off-site education for both students and alumni Upgraded Classrooms to support learning and collaboration Seminar Rooms to provide flexible learning space Library Upgrades to enhance our research resources and add more opportunities to stay on campus to study and connect with each other Environmental Upgrades will enable us to honour our values as students of naturopathy and create a healthier environment for our community Focus on Curriculum The world of education is never static, especially in a field like ours. Staying relevant and forward thinking requires constant review and enhancement of our curriculum, as well as connection to the broader community. A new Teaching & Learning Centre will be dedicated to curriculum excellence, effective online course delivery and innovative professional development for faculty. Student Support Providing financial support to attract and retain talented students will ensure our community remains strong and that all qualified candidates have this opportunity, regardless of financial circumstances. Providing emotional support to help students manage the stress of a demanding program will enable students to flourish. We are launching a new initiative called Thrive, which will focus on expanding wellness services and create an even more supportive environment. Professional Support Our commitment to students does not end with their academic success. We are equally committed to their professional lives as naturopathic doctors. CCNM will establish a Practice Development & Support Centre to provide resources and ongoing connection to students and alumni as they launch their careers. 12 CCNM Turning Point Campaign CCNM Turning Point Campaign 13
Collaboration & Connection $2 million CCNM s growth will depend on our global leadership in the field of naturopathic medicine. A cornerstone of our vision is to advance integrative and supportive practices that empower patients with access to the full spectrum of health care options delivered with the highest professional care. CCNM should drive the conversation around integrative health care in Canada. We re at a critical point where the momentum has never been stronger. Change is happening. With more collaboration, more research and more connections beyond our own community, CCNM will lead that change. Dave Nelson CCNM Class of 2019 Collaboration Among the most promising professional advances CCNM has spearheaded are the Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre and the Brampton Naturopathic Teaching Clinic at Brampton Civic Hospital. These bold initiatives are proving to the world that collaboration works. They send a powerful message to patients and to the broader health care community that we could be doing much more together. We will actively pursue integrative and adjunctive initiatives in partnership with other health care professionals to treat and prevent illness and promote health. Connecting with Patients Patients are at the core of everything we do. Placing their needs at the top of our priority list includes delivering the highest quality clinical care. This means investing in technological innovations in patient care and maintaining comfortable, welcoming environments in our patient care centres. It also means investing in more clinics to increase the number of patients we can serve without compromising the time, care and attention to detail that are among our greatest strengths. Impact on the lives of people living with cancer Witness the growing number of organizations that have partnered with the Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre to support patients living with cancer. 10 THIS IS OUR TURNING POINT JOIN US. The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine is a leader a leader in research, a leader in education, a leader in innovation. There is a great opportunity for improvement within our current health care system by taking a more integrative approach to patient care. As naturopathic doctors we are fortunate to be able to take the time with each of our patients to look at the totality of the individual. This approach allows us to uncover details in a patient s history which can be extremely significant to patient outcomes. I would love to see us better integrated making care more accessible to people. More research and working collaboratively with the medical community are critical to improving health care outcomes. Dr. Louise McCrindle, ND Clinic supervisor Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia Focus Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic That leadership has brought naturopathic medicine to this decisive moment. Join us as we unleash a new generation of innovative health care practitioners and researchers ready to meet the challenge of creating a world where an integrative approach to health is the norm. By taking the right path now, we can change the face of health care. Join us. 16 CCNM Turning Point Campaign CCNM Turning Point Campaign 17
