12 Mental Illness A serious disturbance in thinking, emotions, or behaviour 1 in 5 Mental illness is used to describe a mental health condition that matches a defined list of signs and symptoms. These defined lists usually come from one of two handbooks: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD). Can occur with a substance use problem or disorder which is known as concurrent disorder or issue Mental Health
