Educational goals and aims The aim of education is to familiarize students with the clinical microbiology, in particular: 1. Clinical pictures and treatment rules of particular infectious diseases. 2. Rules of laboratory results interpretation. 3. Resistance mechanisms to antimicrobial agents. 4. Recommended therapy of particular infectious diseases. 5. Framework of preventing of infectious diseases (special consideration of obligatory and recommended vaccination). 6. Hospital acquired infections 7. Epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases. 8. Opportunistic infections 9. Application of diagnostic methods based on genetic techniques used in clinical practice. 10. Application of rapid identification tests in everyday practice 2

Initial requirements Basic cell structures of various microorganisms, their functional specializations and ability to cause the diseases in humans and animals, the genetic mechanisms of acquisition of drug resistance by microorganisms, microorganisms classification, strict pathogenic and representatives of human physiological flora, influence of abiotic and biotic environmental factors on the human body, consequences of the exposure of the human body to various chemical and biological agents, principles of infectious diseases prevention, epidemiology of bacterial, fungal and viral infections, geographical occurrence of infectious diseases, understanding the basics of microbiological, fungal and viral diagnostic, basics of disinfection, sterilization and aseptic processing, types of biological specimen used in microbiological diagnostics and rules of its collection and proceeding.evaluation of the environmental hazards and usage of basic methods to detect the presence of harmful factors, recognition of the most common human parasites on the basis of their construction, life cycles and infection symptoms, microscope operating, biological samples safe handling, interpretation of microbiological results. 4. Understands the problem of antibiotic resistance. Knows the specimen collection principles, rules of specimen storage, transport and processing. Knows the main etiological agents of infections of particular human organs/systems: blood, respiratory tract, gastro-intestinal tract, genito-urinary tract, sexual transmitted infections, nervous system, skin and soft tissues, bone and joints. Evaluates the environmental hazards and uses basic methods allowing to detect the presence of harmful factors ( biological and chemical ) in the biosphere. Knows the clinical picture of particular infectious diseases and is able to associate it with defined set of symptoms.
