3 1.0 Structure and function of the CNG This annual report for Cheshire & Merseyside Strategic Clinical Network (CMSCN) Brain and CNS Clinical Network Group (CNG) relates to the operational period 1st April 2013 to 31st March This report describes the work carried out across the Network over the course of the year. The CNG supports the overall aims of the network by facilitating collaboration between providers and users of brain and CNS cancer services in order to provide seamless care based on best practice. The Group is the main source of clinical advice to the CMSCN Cancer Steering Group & Oversight Group. The CNG is a busy, productive multi-professional group with strong engagement from participating Trusts and MDTs. Group membership is fully compliant with peer review requirements. The CNG s Constitution is reviewed & updated on an annual basis. Content includes: Terms of Reference Communication requirements Key Responsibilities 14-1C-104k The CNG met twice during the reporting period. The national re-configuration of clinical networks has impacted significantly on the capacity to support clinical network groups through the transition period and the Chair of the Network Group stepped down in November 2013 with a subsequent hiatus until a replacement chair was appointed. Appendix 1.0 contains a summary record of meeting dates & attendance. 14-1C-105k - The CNG has produced a work programme, which reflects the strategic ambitions of CMSCN. This has been agreed with the Network Cancer Clinical Lead & Medical Director of Cheshire, Wirral & Warrington Area Team. 2.0 Coordination of care/patient pathways The network group has reviewed & updated its clinical guidelines during this reporting period. These reflect all relevant modalities, including: Imaging Pathology Surgical Management Chemotherapy Radiotherapy The network group agreed the list of chemotherapy treatment algorithms with Clatterbridge Cancer Centre The CNG has agreed pathways for: Teenage and young adults: covering initial management and follow up on completion of first line treatment Brain and CNS CNG Annual Report (Approved August 2014) Page 3 of 6
4 3.0 Patient experience 14-1C-116k Results of the 2013 National Cancer Patient Experience Survey were released at the end of August Nationally 730 brain and CNS patients responded to the survey but only 10 surveys were completed locally. The results of the survey were discussed at the meeting on the 21 st November 2013, a CQUIN has been developed for contact with a CNS and the results are being collated and a patient survey on pituitary patients is to be carried out in The CNG has active patient representation through the Brain Tumour Charity who raise a number of service related issues through the group with practical positive results. The introduction of patients passports has been met positively by patients supporting them in giving information once and not having to repeat details; feedback on changes within the treatment centre have influenced positive change around car parking and outpatient management systems 4.0 Clinical outcomes/indicators 14-1C-117k The CNG co-ordinated an audit in ensuring all patients were discussed at the Pituitary MDT following peer review feedback 14-1C-118k Clinical Trials were reported at each meeting and the results of the MCCRN study See Appendix 2 See appendix Good practice Developing the neuro-rehabilitation operational policy has required cross network involvement and a comprehensive directory compiled 6.0 Concerns The group not having met consistently over the past year due to Network constraints has impacted on the ability to keep up the momentum of the group. Additional support has been secured and a new chair identified which will hopefully support the group in going forward Brain and CNS CNG Annual Report (Approved August 2014) Page 4 of 6
