4 Increased Omega-3 Soybean Oil [ OMEGA-3 Food companies should expect more soybean oils that will be functional yet healthful, including increased omega-3 soybean oil. Research shows that diets rich in omega-3 fats reduce inflammation and may help lower risk of heart disease. 1 The main source of these fats in the U.S. diet is soybean oil, which provides omega-3s in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). 2 However, the body does not efficiently convert ALA to the desired long-chain omega-3s. These preferred forms of omega-3s are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are easier for the body to process. ALA Conversion Chart The body skips the ALA conversion step when [consuming products made with SDA-enriched soy. Commodity Soybean Oil SDA-rich Soybean Oil OIL ALA Alpha-linolenic Acid SDA Stearidonic Acid EPA Eicosapentaenoic Acid DHA Docosahexaenoic Acid
5 While EPA and DHA are found in fish and shellfish, the American diet only contains a limited amount of omega-3s from these sources, so Americans need additional sources in their diets to gain the benefits. Researchers are developing soybeans with increased levels of stearidonic acid (SDA) omega-3s, which are converted into EPA more efficiently than ALA omega-3s. For the food industry, SDA-rich omega-3 soybean oil can be used to improve a wide variety of products, including soups, sauces, beverages, yogurts and breads. SDA-RICH OMEGA-3 SOYBEAN OIL could have a significant impact on public health 3,4
6 Availability In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed SDA-rich soybean oil s Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status for use in foods and beverages. Pending final approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, farmers will begin growing SDA-rich omega-3 soybeans. INCREASED OMEGA-3 SOYBEAN OIL is available for testing
