This convenient device is molded from polypropylene with an integral, heat bonded filter. FilterCups offer you a choice of 3 glass microfiber and 3 cellulose filter media. These devices hold a 20mL capacity and have greater than a 31 square centimeter filtration area.they are usually used under vacuum with the FilterCup Stem (available separately). FilterCup units snap easily into and out of the stem which is compatible with filtering flasks and stoppers. Whatman Glass Microfibre The unique properties of borosilicate glass microfibres enable Whatman to manufacture filters with high loading capacity and retention of very fine particulates. The life of a membrane filter can be extended many times by placing a prefilter adjacent to or upstream of the membrane. The total particulate load challenging the membrane is considerably reduced, thus allowing the membrane to operate efficiently. Multigrade GMF 10 used as a prefilter nearly doubles the volume of sample filtered compared to a single density prefilter. Compared to an unprotected membrane, the volume of sample filtered is three to seven times greater. These membranes are characterized by a smoother and more uniform surface than pure nitrocellulose filters. Also, the color contrast provided by the filter surface facilitates particle detection and minimizes eye fatigue. Compared to pure nitrocellulose filters, mixed ester membranes have a smoother and more uniform surface as well as offer color contrasting, making it easier to detect particles. 4 43 GE Nylon Hydrophilic GE Nylon supported membrane filters are fast becoming the "standard" filter material due to their wide chemical compatibility range and naturally hydrophilic characteristics. GE Nylon filters can be used to filter all aqueous and the majority of solvent solutions. GE Nylon filters are manufactured by GE Osmonics using a unique impregnation process that eliminates cracking, tearing, breaking and distortion when handled or creased. Each membrane filter has unequalled dimensional stability even after autoclaving and is completely unaffected by temperatures up to 180 C (36 F) or steam sterilizing. The exclusive impregnation process results in a nylon filter with uniform pore sizes and consistent flow rates for continuously reliable performance. Since GE Nylon filters are naturally hydrophilic, wetting agents are not used during manufacturing, resulting in a very low level of extractables. The precise pore size of the screen filters is achieved by exposing polycarbonate film to charged particles in a nuclear reactor, which leaves tracks in the film. The pore density is controlled by the duration of time that the polycarbonate film is exposed to the charged particles. The tracks on the polycarbonate film are then dissolved with a chemical solution to form cylindrical pores. Varying the temperature, strength and exposure time of the etching solution controls pore sizes. The membrane has a wetting agent, Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) that permits it to be hydrophilic. This filter offers several benefits when viewing surface samples with optical or electron microscopes. GE PCTE (Polycarbonate) filters eliminate the clearing steps in microscopy required when using mixed esters of cellulose filters. Cyto-clear slides eliminate distracting pore outlines, ensuring clear observation of the specimen. No need to dissolve the filter with chloroform. As a result they are considerably more hydrophobic than standard membranes. They also have a typical water contact angles that range from 70 to 90. These filters are designed for chemotaxis and venting applications. Chemotaxis has been defined as the cellular migration toward a chemical stimulus. This phenomenon is used extensively in studies of the iune reaction mechanism. The smooth surface and cylindrical pores allow rapid cell migration and reduced incubation time. Membrane filters are preferred as cell growth substrates due to their significant advantages when compared to traditional non-porous plastic or glass substrates.
