1 DISEASE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM -Plus (DEWS-Plus) Weekly Epidemilgical Reprt Jan 215 Summary: Out f 49 functinal sentinel sites, 48 (99.7 %) have submitted reprts this week. Out f a ttal f 399,111 new cnsultatins (174,21 male, 224,91 female) recrded this week, 39.7% r 158,623 (76,57 male, 82,116 female) cnsultatins were reprted due t DEWS targeted diseases. Main causes f cnsultatins in this week were Pneumnia, 24,446 cases (6.1% ut f ttal new cnsultatins) and Acute Diarrheal Diseases, 19,591 cases (4.9% ut f ttal new cnsultatins). A ttal f 23 deaths were reprted this week, f which 7 were due t DEWS targeted Diseases, which includes 55 Pneumnia deaths, 2 Diarrheal Diseases deaths and 1 Meningitis/SIC deaths and 3 Measles deaths. Ttal f 1 utbreaks reprted this week, f which seven were suspected Measles utbreaks reprted frm Ghazni, Khst, Kunar, Hirat and Ghr Prvinces and three suspected Dg bit utbreaks reprted frm Kapisa Wardak and Kunar Prvinces. Measles Outbreaks During the week 4 ttally 7 suspected Measles utbreaks were detected, Investigated and respnded by DEWS plus Teams the details are discussed belw: 1.1 Ghr Prvinces: This measles utbreak was reprted frm Sarband Sad- Sai village f Chag charan district f Ghr prvince n Jan 19 /215 n the fllwing day, the team started the utbreak investigatin.. Reprted vaccinatin cverage was 1%, Ttally 56 suspected measles cases were detected during the investigatin, the utbreak initially cnfirmed clinically. Fur lab samples were cllected fr cnfirmatin.. All suspected cases were treated, vaccinatin campaign has been cnducted, and Vita A supplements was distributed and health educatin sessin investigatin f further cases. 1.2 Ghazni prvince: Reprted frm Khaki Ghariba, Nawabad, Qalai Shhada and Shams Sahib villages f Ghazni city f Ghazni prvince n Jan 23 /215, the team Reprted vaccinatin cverage was 5%, During the investigatin there was 24 cnfirm utbreak, There were 17 case f under five years ld and 7 case f ver five years ld.based n sex, there was 13 female and 11 male cases with n deaths assciated. Reprted vaccinatin cverage was 5%, During the investigatin there was 16 cnfirm utbreak, There were 11 case f under five years ld and 5 case f ver five years ld.based n sex, there was 7 female and 9 male cases with n deaths assciated. Reprted vaccinatin cverage was 1%, During the investigatin there was 9 suspected measles cases.it was clinical cnfirm utbreak, There were 9 case f under five years ld but n case f ver five years ld.based n sex, there was 5 female and 4 male cases with n deaths assciated. Suspected Dg bite /Rabies 2.1 Kapisa prvince: Reprted frm Wahar village f Nijrab district f Kapisa prvince n Jan 28 /215, the team investigated the area n the fllwing day, during the investigatin there were 2 suspected Rabies/ dg bites cases that were bitten by the same hme dg and it was then killed. There was ne case f less than five years ld and ne case f ver five years ld.based n sex, there were ne female and ne male case with n assciated deaths. A sample was cllected frm death dg which was tested and the result was psitive. The patients were treated and vaccinatin was advised t them and health educatin sessin investigatin f further cases 5

6 2.2 Wrdak prvicne : Reprted frm Sadmrda village f Narkh district f Wardak prvince n Jan 28 /215, the team investigated the area n Feb3/215, During the investigatin there were 14 dg bites cases wh were bitten by the same street dg, There were 14 case f ver five years ld including tw females.. N death was reprted.. N lab sample has been cllected frm the animal. The patients were treated and vaccinatin was advised t them and health educatin sessin cnducted in surrunding villages, the active surveillance has been established fr investigatin f further cases. 2.3: Kunar Prvince: Reprted frm Bargam and Tangai village f Ghazi Abad district f Kunar prvince n Feb 28 /215, the team investigated the area n Jan 3/215, during the investigatin there were 3 suspected Rabies/ dg bites cases that were bitten by the street dg and it was then killed. There was ne case f less than five years ld and 2 case f ver five years ld wh were all males.. There was ne assciated deaths was reprted.. A sample was cllected frm death animal which was tested and the result was psitive. Recmmendatins: High number f cases and deaths (abve alert threshld) due t Pneumnia in the age grup less than 5 years (12.4 % pneumnia cases amng ttal cnsultatins and 55 deaths) is a cause f cncern. This shuld be analyzed and discussed at prvincial level amng stakehlders t find ut the reasns fr high mrbidity and mrtality. The increase in the number f measles and malaria cases as cmpared t the previus weeks shuld lked int at field level t find ut if any utbreak is ging n. The increase in the utbreaks f Measles in Suth, Suth East and West Regins is t be given serius cnsideratin at the prvincial level. Vaccinatin campaign shuld be prmted in area where assessed vaccinatin cverage is lw especially in Suth Regin and West Regin. Any Rabies/dg bite case shuld seek health services in rabies endemic area. 7
