The SARS outbreak in 2003, the re-emergence of Influenza annually and the ever changing HIV all have impacted on clinical and laboratory medicine greatly. Discuss emerging and re-emerging viral infections as follows: 1. Concept of Emerging and re-emerging viral infections 2. Viral and Host factors which influence these Emerging and re-emerging viral infections. 3. An approach to identifying suspected new viral pathogens. 4. Laboratory techniques which are used in identifying suspected new viral pathogens. 5. Current Emerging and re-emerging viral infections DUE DATE: WA: 6 April 2011 BSc Med. 5 Assignment preparation must begin from the first day of lectures. Plagiarism of previous students work will not be tolerated and NO marks will be granted for such work. Definitely NO cutting and pasting from the internet. Each assignment must be 5 A4 pages. The Title, Student name and number must appear at the top of your work. Do not include a cover page. The format of the work -Font type- Times New Roman NOT bold type -Font Size- 12 -Line spacing Single sided print only The content of the work -An insightful discussion of the topic must be evident. -Appropriate headings and sub-headings are essential. -Diagrams and tables may be used cautiously and sparingly. -A minimum of 5 references must be consulted - of these only one is to be a university website, the others must be appropriate reference books and journals. The assignments will contribute 5% to the course assessment. All assignments must be handed to the lecturer on the due date. He/she will acknowledge receipt using the class register. Unless prior arrangements are facilitated and agreed to, delays will be penalized.( 2.5% will be deducted for each day of delay) LECTURE SESSIONS (LEC) Please note the following regarding these sessions: Appropriate attendance will facilitate accumulation of adequate knowledge and understanding to facilitate passing the final examinations Students are expected to take good notes during the lecture. Notes will only be made available when essential. The lectures are to facilitate your reading to supplement your knowledge.
