2 October Birthday of the Past P A G E 2 Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes? I have nothing but respect for you and not much of that. Room service? Send up a larger room. I was married by a judge. I should have asked for a jury. Outside of a dog, a book is man s best friend. Inside of a dog, it s too dark to read. Comedian and film actor Groucho Marx was one of the Marx Brothers. He spent nearly seven decades making people laugh with his snappy one-liners. Groucho Marx was born on October 2, 1890, in New York City. The Marx Brothers had a career breakthrough in 1914, as Groucho's quick-witted quips won over crowds. By the 1920s, the Marx Brothers had become a hugely popular theatrical act. They made films before splitting up in 1949, at which point Groucho performed solo on radio and television. He died on August 19, While he originally aspired to be a doctor, Marx started his career as a singer. One of his earliest efforts proved to be disastrous, however. As part of the Le May Trio, Marx got stuck in Colorado for a while after another group member took off with his pay. He had to work at a grocery store to earn enough money to make it back to New York. By the 1920s, the Marx Brothers had become a hugely popular theatrical act. Groucho had developed some of his trademarks by this time. He often wore a long coat, a paintedon mustache, and thick glasses and held on to a cigar on stage. In addition to just liking cigars, Marx explained that they proved useful, too. He said that "if you forget a line, all you have to do is stick the cigar in your mouth and puff on it until you think of what you've forgotten.

4 P A G E 4 Nurse s Corner Windermere Care Centre follows the directions of the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and the Medical Health Officer in preparing for the flu season and monitoring of flu like symptoms. We also administer flu vaccine to all of our residents on site when available and booster Pneumonia vaccine to residents who meet the criteria. In the event of influenza like symptoms, the nursing team monitors symptoms on a daily basis. When we meet the outbreak definition we contact the Medical Health Officer who then guides Windermere Care Centre during an outbreak. What can you do to help? Get your flu shot. It's safe and it works! Where can I get a flu shot? Unfortunately, we cannot provide visitors with the vaccine. You can book an appointment with your family doctor, at a walk-in clinic, with your pharmacist, or at a local community health center. Find flu shot clinics throughout the province on the BC Flu Clinic Locator website. Do not visit if YOU are sick with flu like symptoms. We can pass the phone to your family member so you can talk to them or pass along messages. Sanitize YOUR hands on arrival and before leaving WCC. Wash your hands before leaving the resident s room using the sink, soap and water and paper towels/ hand sanitizer stations. What if I have more questions? Please talk to the Nurse (ask the Receptionist for the Nurse s extension) or talk to Josie the ADOC (ext # 5471) or Bincy George DOC (ext # 5470) or bgeorge@windermerecare.ca
5 P A G E 5 Cooking Corner Pumpkin Cookies with Chocolate Chips Ingredients for Pumpkin Cookies: 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup white sugar & 1 cup light brown sugar 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup canned pumpkin puree 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt Spices: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon; 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg; 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 2 cups (12-ounce bag) milk chocolate chips, not semisweet Non-stick cooking spray or parchment paper Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray cookie sheets with nonstick spray or line them with parchment paper. Using a mixer, beat the butter until smooth. Beat in the white and brown sugars, a little at a time, until the mixture is light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs 1 at a time, then mix in the vanilla and pumpkin puree. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. Slowly beat the flour mixture into the batter in thirds. Stir in the chips. Scoop the cookie dough by heaping tablespoons onto the prepared cookie sheets and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cookies are browned around the edges. Remove the cookie sheets from the oven and let them rest for 2 minutes. Take the cookies off with a spatula and cool them on wire racks. Bon appetite!
6 P A G E 6 Chaplain s Corner The power of paying a compliment Mark Twain once said, I can live two months on a good compliment. But that only tells half the story. While the person who receives the praise enjoys feeling noticed and valued (and may then be motivated to do the same for someone else), the giver can also bask in the connection. With every compliment given, a bond is strengthened, trust is built, and conversation is encouraged. Potent stuff! Here are five Dos and Don ts to make the most of giving and receiving of admiration: DO be genuine. False praise is easy to spot, and it undermines your trustworthiness. DON T give back-handed compliments, such as You throw a ball well for a girl. DO be as specific as possible. Not Vague like, I like how you redid your living room, but more specific like, I like the color choice of your living room walls. It s a perfect accent with the rug and drapes. DON T brush off a compliment given to you. It s like returning a gift. DO smile and say thank you when you receive a compliment. Chaplain Ken (Re-printed from Unstuck. Com)
