2 A Letter from the Manager s Desk - Jake Bates During the holidays, it s a good time to reflect about what you re thankful for, and chances are, family and friends are at the top of the list. However, it s very common for seniors to deal with depression around this time of year because of loneliness. Maybe their family doesn t live nearby or maybe losing their soul mate makes it hard to ask for help. Do you have an elderly neighbor who might enjoy a cup of tea by your Christmas tree? Or, do you have a nursing home by your residence that you can visit? At PPRC, we welcome visitors to dine with our residents, participate in a fun activity, or join us for an afternoon social. When you see the look of appreciation on a senior s face for taking the time to visit, it sure makes the holidays even merrier. Have a happy month of December! Jake Bates Assistant Manager - Lexi Metz Community Relations Coordinator Stay active, healthy and happy! Parker Place is a vibrant assisted living community that is the perfect place for active seniors who simply want a comfortable, secure and enjoyable home environment. At Parker Place Retirement Community, your care is customized for your unique situation. Our staff can assist you so you can still be part of an active community without any of the hassles or worry that comes with living alone. We create a senior living service plan to ensure that your needs and wishes are met. At Parker Place, your independence is encouraged to make your assisted living experience unlike anywhere else. We have immediate availability on both our Assisted Living, and Memory Care communities. Give me a call to schedule a tour! - Lexi Metz

3 Health Care Coordinator - Maureen Hershey FIGURING OUT THE FLU Flu season is in full swing, and Leakesville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center knows how important it is to stay on top of your yearly flu vaccination. We make a point to provide flu vaccinations to both our residents and staff each year. Check out the facts below for all you need to know to stay flu-free this winter. WHAT EXACTLY IS THE FLU? According to the CDC, the flu, or seasonal influenza, is caused by viruses that infect your respiratory tract (i.e., your nose, throat and lungs). The difference between the flu and the common cold is that the flu causes other potentially severe complications such as dehydration, bacterial pneumonia and worsening of chronic diseases like congestive heart failure, asthma or diabetes. Each year, 5 to 20 percent of the U.S. population experiences the flu, and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? The flu is a contagious respiratory illness that tends to come on suddenly. Symptoms include: - Fever/chills - Cough - Sore throat - Runny/stuff nose - Headaches - Fatigue - Vomiting/diarrhea (more common in children) HOW DOES THE FLU SPREAD? The CDC says that the main way influenza viruses are thought to be spread is from person to person through coughing or sneezing. WHO NEEDS A FLU VACCINATION? Anyone can get the flu, so getting your yearly vaccination is very important. Everyone 6 months of age and older should be vaccinated. People at especially high risk for the flu include: - People 65 years old and older - Those with chronic medical conditions (heart disease, asthma, diabetes, etc.) - Pregnant women - Young children HOW DOES THE FLU SPREAD? The CDC says that the main way influenza viruses are thought to be spread is from person to person through coughing or sneezing. WHEN IS FLU SEASON IN THE U.S.? Flu season occurs during the fall and winter seasons, with peak season occurring any time from late November through March. IF I GOT THE FLU OR THE FLU VACCINE LAST YEAR, WILL I STILL BE PROTECTED THIS YEAR? Not necessarily, says the CDC. The flu virus is constantly changing, so getting a yearly vaccination is a must. Studies also show that the vaccination also tends to wear off over the course of a year, particularly among the elderly. IS THE STOMACH FLU REALLY THE FLU? Probably not. While vomiting and diarrhea are considered typical flu symptoms in children, these symptoms can be caused by a variety of different viruses, bacteria or even parasites. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are rarely the main symptoms of the flu and are more associated with stomach or intestinal illness. For more information on the flu, you can visit the CDC s website at Have a happy and healthy holiday! - Maureen Hershey

4 Culinary Coordinator - Christine Weber Our Thanksgiving Luncheon was a Hit! Residents at Parker Place Retirement Community really enjoyed our Thanksgiving Luncheon last month. It was an amazing meal that was enjoyed by all. The Pecan pie was particularly outstanding! We love having family and friends join our residents for lunch and supper!!! Meal cost is $8 per person or $3 for seniors. RSVPs 24 hours in advance are appreciated. Thank you! - Christine Recipe of the Month Caramel Pecan Cheesecake 1 sheet refrigerated pie pastry 1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened ½ C sugar 4 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1-1/4 C Diamond of California Chopped Pecans 1 jar (12-1/4 oz.) fat-free caramel ice cream topping Additional fat-free caramel ice cream topping (optional) 1. Line 9-in. deep-dish pie plate with pastry. Trim and flute edges. In a small bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar, 1 egg and vanilla until smooth. Spread into pastry shell; sprinkle with pecans. 2. In a small bowl, whisk remaining eggs; gradually whisk in caramel topping until blended. Pour slowly over pecans. 3. Bake at 375 degrees for minutes or until lightly browned (loosely cover edges with foil after 20 minutes if pie browns too quickly). Cool on a wire rack for 1 hour. Refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight before slicing. If desired, garnish with additional caramel ice cream topping. Enjoy! Maintenance Coordinator - Tom Moffitt Snow & Ice It will not be long before the snow will be flying, hopefully in time for the holidays! Along with the snow come icy road conditions, as we all know! The roads here in Parkersburg are no exception. There are a few areas in the community that are prone to freezing and can cause problems. Please be careful at the curve. Use caution, and drive safe wherever you may be going! - Tom
