2 GLEWS: Joint FAO, OIE, WHO initiative The main objective of GLEWS is to strengthen global early warning of major animal disease including zoonoses through strengthening global disease surveillance and alert. GLEWS builds on strong collaboration and coordination among the tripartite partners and other stakeholders. 2

4 GLEWS Governance: GLEWS Task Force: The GLEWS Task Force (GTF) is responsible for implementing the GLEWS Agreement and GLEWS Program. GLEWS Management : The GLEWS Management Committee is composed of the DG or ADG of each organization, or their official nominees. GLEWS Technical Working Groups The GLEWS Working Groups (GWGs) will be set up by the GLEWS Task Force to advise on and assist in implementing the work plan 4

8 GLEWS reports (as of January 2012) 108 initial reports from FAO, 45 from OIE and 45 from WHO 162 events were entered in the GLEWS platform by the three partners between July 2009-January 2012 and 150 were closed following their verification (confirmed or denied by OIE and WHO) or unverifiable. In addition there are regular communications within the GLEWS task force take using s or teleconference to assess information related to human or animal disease outbreaks when needed. 10 GLEWS added value GLEWS has shown that its added value clearly lies in: Improving data sharing and collaboration between the three partners Driving continuous joint risk assessment and Identify and prioritizing areas for advanced risk analysis and forecasting Providing recommendations for surveillance, prevention and control Providing support to the emergency response arms (CMC-AH, GAR) Helping to develop best practices and guidance for surveillance, prevention and control of disease at human animal ecosystems interface Demonstrating the value of cross-sectoral collaboration 10

12 GLEWS II: The Way Forward - To understand disease dynamics and identify drivers/determinant/risk factors of disease emergence/spread - Strengthening joint risk assessment for early warning - Promoting interoperability of information systems for data sharing at all levels (national, regional and global) - Developing guidance for surveillance and risk reduction of priority zoonotic diseases at animal-human-ecosystems interface - Building regional networks to strength surveillance and alert systems - Supporting cross-sectoral collaboration among stakeholders in animal health, human health and food safety (e.g. WHO/FAO INFOSAN and Codex). 12
