2 Summary of FMD activities in the North Africa region 1. Coordination meetings organised since May Participation included: regional CVOs, representatives from EU, EuFMD, FAO Tunis, and experts from OIE Reference laboratories (shortly after the occurrence of the outbreaks in Tunisia) 2. FMD regularly debated in REMESA meetings and resolution on the establishment of a regional vaccine bank for FMD was adopted 3. REMESA sub-networks were revitalised: FMD central topic 4. 4 REMESA Activities 9 th JPC meeting - Tunis (November 2014):! REMESA Countries entrusted the OIE to establish a regional FMD antigen and vaccine bank for North Africa! This bank will enable REMESA countries to high quality v a c c i n e s o r a n t i g e n s w h i c h c o m p l y w i t h O I E intergovernmental standards! This bank will be particularly important for promptly countering emergency situations! 6 Preliminary technical meeting April 2015 (OIE HQs): Preliminary technical related to FMD Vaccine Bank for the REMESA region:! Participants included Experts from OIE Reference Laboratories for FMD (IZSLER and Pirbright);! Meeting objective: prepare a concept note to select, in accordance with the regional epidemiological situation, the strains to be considered as core strains and optional strains and included in the vaccine bank! 9 OIE FMD Antigen and Vaccine Bank! The technical document emerging from the preliminary technical meeting and containing the FMD serotypes to be included was presented and discussed twice May 2015: 83rd OIE General Session: presentation and discussion of the results of the preliminary meeting on FMD vaccine bank for the REMESA Region with the concerned CVOs was conducted March 2016: Workshop on the harmonisation of the FMD vaccination strategy for North Africa region Organisation mondiale de la santé animale Protéger les animaux, Préserver notre avenir 9

10 REMESA and the OIE FMD Antigen and Vaccine Bank OIE Tunis Sub-Regional Representation attended GF-TADs for Europe meeting held on 30 September 2015 Recommendations:! GF-TADs Europe strengthen its collaboration with REMESA on common priority diseases, particularly activities relating to FMD prevention and control! GF-TADs for Europe fully supports the establishment of a regional FMD vaccine bank for North Africa under REMESA.! The importance of deploying a collaborative approach regarding the technical and financial aspects, to be jointly supported by donors and recipient countries, was underlined Organisation mondiale de la santé animale Protéger les animaux, Préserver notre avenir 10

The Vaccine bank would solely be beneficial upon existence of a harmonised vaccination strategy among the countries!

11 JPC REMESA - Algeria Reiterated the importance of establishing a regional vaccine bank for FMD in the REMESA region. In parallel, also recommended that :! The Vaccine bank would solely be beneficial upon existence of a harmonised vaccination strategy among the countries!
