7 Friday June 21st, :30 am 4:30 pm EXHIBITORS Support our exhibitors and sponsors by stopping by and enjoying good conversation and learning something new to take back to our 7,000 families and professionals across the globe! 7:30 am - 8:30 am CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST/EXHIBITORS 8:30-8:45 am WELCOME Welcome from Wisconsin Families for Hands & Voices Welcome from Cheryl Johnson, Board President and Janet DesGeorges, Executive Director 8:30-9:45 am PLENARY I: Leadership Leadership that Matters- Guess what, we are the one we have been waiting for. Each one of us has the divine potential to provide leadership that can transform our families, our communities, and yes even the world. This session will explore the characteristics and practices of transformative leaders. Trainer: Falomi Randolph 9:45-10 am BREAK VISIT THE EXHIBITORS 10:00 am 11:00 am BREAKOUT SESSION A Note: This year s breakouts are broken into three tracks: TRACK ONE: These sessions are basic courses designed for first timers to the conference, start up, provisional, and newer chapters. These courses are also good for leaders who want to present this information back in their home chapters and want to observe how to present the information in these courses. TRACK TWO: These sessions are designed for chapters who may be ready for more advanced applications in different content areas. TRACK THREE: These sessions are topical in nature and may be of interest to all participants. Attendees may participate in any of the breakouts, and designations are meant for planning purposes and clarification for those attending. TRACK ONE: We Are Hands & Voices O vations Who are we? What are our values and goals of the organization? This basic training takes a look at the overall history, structure and current status of Hands & Voices. This session is one that is designed for chapters to present in their own locales, and the trainers of this session will also talk about how to present this session back in your own regions. Trainers: Lisa Crawford (TX,) Chris Moody (TX) TRACK TWO: AAP and Hands & Voices: Working Together for a Better Tomorrow Senate A/B The diagnosis of hearing loss in a child or infant is beyond overwhelming. The physical and emotional support needs to come from a multitude of resources so the family can aid their child s communication to the outside world. It is imperative that your doctor take on a primary role. Primary care physicians are guided by their EHDI chapter champion liaisons. Dr. Michaels will be covering the EHDI task force goals and objectives, which were created to improve the effectiveness of newborn hearing screening, diagnosis, and intervention. The second portion of her talk will touch upon different resources to help stressed out parents cope with the confirmation and lifestyle of a hearing-impaired child. Trainer: Elizabeth R. Michaels, DO, FAAP - 3 -

8 Page 4 TRACK THREE: The Impact of Spiritual Life on the Family Journey The impact of a family s faith, religion, and spiritual reflections in response to the identification, acceptance, decisions, and beliefs about deafness and hearing loss is often a primary driving force for families, and yet may or may not be communicated to those who are providing support. In the parent-to-parent support model, these conversations do often emerge. The necessary skills and self reflection of providing support in this context will be explored. Learning to define the boundaries of where these conversations go in the context of organizational representation, while having the freedom to be with a family where they are at, will also be addressed. Participants in this session will have the opportunity to share their own strategies and stories in keeping with the wisdom among us. Trainers: Janet DesGeorges (HQ), Stephanie Olson (HQ and CO) 11:15 am 12:00pm PLENARY II: Infant Mental Health We have all heard that Parent Involvement is the magic ingredient in successful child outcomes and the greatest predictor of successful outcomes for children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. So what is it about parent involvement that leads to these claims? Why are some parents involved and others not? This presentation will explore Infant and Family Mental Health Concepts and their application to the lives of families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The following premises will be made: infants and caregivers together form the cornerstone of human relationships; Communication evolves from early attachment patterns between the parent and infant and develops in the context of the relationship between them; and every relationship has the potential to be therapeutic. Topics such as the transition to parenthood, importance of attachment, interruptions in early relationships, maternal sensitivity and responsiveness and the emotional life of a baby will be discussed. Possible ideas about how Infant and Family Mental Health concepts might be utilized in Hands & Voices and H&V Guide By Your Side Programs will also be explored. Presenter: Elizabeth Seeliger (WI/HQ) 12:00 pm - 12:15 pm Awards Ceremony 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm LUNCH Pick up your box lunch and come sit with some new friends and discover what other chapters are doing all over the world! Committee/Topical Lunch Tables: For those of you involved in any of the following committees for Hands & Voices and/or interested in these topics, please find your designated table to eat and talk about these projects in an informal forum. 9 TRACK TWO: Consensus How does your chapter leadership make decisions? What if the issue is controversial and there is diversity of thought? This session will look at the definition, theory and practice of consensus decision making, and provide H&V chapter boards and others some grounding in this topic. Trainer: Tony Ronco (HQ/CA) TRACK THREE: Communicating vs Communicating: Senate A/B Communication is difficult enough without throwing hearing challenges into the mix. How does a parent or a professional determine whether a child is not understanding due to hearing loss or simply being difficult? This workshop will explore the challenges of parent-child communication in general and offer suggestions for making sure the child (and the parent!) are understanding intended messages. Diverse communication modes will be touched on and ideas for enhancing family communication will be shared. This workshop will provide information that can be applied outside the scope of hearing/deaf culture. Taught by Pamela Farley, who grew up the only profoundly deaf individual in her family (and extended family), and who has successfully raised four hearing children alongside her deaf husband relying mostly on spoken language rather than signing. Pamela has a passion for working with dual-culture families to aid in improving communication in an attempt at reducing social issues experienced by children outside of their family environment. Trainer: Pamela Farley (TX) 3:00 pm 3:15 pm BREAK - VISIT THE EXHIBITORS Location: 3:15pm 4:15 pm BREAKOUT SESSION C TRACK ONE: Guide By Your Side: An Introduction and Update of Current Programs Ovations This session will cover the concept of GBYS and its flexibility in application to states whether focused on Parent Guides in early intervention systems, parent-networking, and/or Deaf/Hard of Hearing Guides or mentors. GBYS represents the values we have at H&V for direct parent-to-parent support and DHH role models--all who are trained to be unbiased and appropriate in working with families. TRAINERS: Lisa Kovacs (HQ/IN) TRACK TWO: But She is Doing So Well: Supporting Families with Gifted Children Who are D/HH Children who are gifted and deaf/hh require different expectations and programming to reach their potential. Families should not have to choose between services to address one exceptionality over another, though often that is the challenge in schools. Knowledge of effective advocacy strategies, resources and accommodations empowers both parents and educators. Strengths drawn from giftedness can be channeled to assist in compensating for hearing loss and its effect on language development, and enhance the child s identity as deaf or hard of hearing. Two experienced moms/advocates will share both practical and theoretical information on supporting the gifted child who is deaf/hard of hearing. Trainer: Sara Kennedy (HQ/CO, Liesel Thomas (CO)) TRACK THREE: Keeping the Passion Senate A/B When one year blends into the next, how do you keep it all going? What happens when you lose your passion while running your chapter--how can you fire it up again? In this presentation, Karen Putz shares the ups and downs of chapter life and how you can unwrap the passion again and again. Trainers: Karen Putz (IL/HQ) - 5 -

Trainers: Marcy Dicker (WI), Dan Houlihan (WI) TRACK TWO: Data Roundtable Senate A/B This session is for Chapter Leaders from Start-up, Provisional and Authorized chapters (Executive Directors, Board Members and start-up chapter parent leaders) What data does your Chapter collect? How do you collect it? How do you use or share this information with others? If you have questions like this or would like to hear what other chapters are doing in the area of data collection, then join Vicki and Maria as they lead this discussion. This session will be an interactive roundtable discussion focusing on 2 areas; the work that Arizona H&V has done to build a central repository for their Chapter contact information and work being done at the HQ level on collection and use of data for Chapters and HQ reporting. This session will allow Chapters to hear about current and ongoing work as well as give Chapter leaders an opportunity to share what has worked for them on this topic of data collection. Trainer: Vicki Hunting (IA/HQ), Maria Yenerich (AZ) TRACK THREE: Taking the O.U.R. Project to the IEP - Ensuring the Safety and Success of our Children H&V has been working on the O.U.R. (to Observe, Understand, and Respond) Children s Safety Project for the last several years. This year, the exploration of our children s success via the IEP process will be explored by examining discussions that can happen in the most important meeting of the year: THE IFSP/IEP MEETING! Practical suggestions for incorporating children s safety needs through measureable goals/objectives families and advocates can bring to the table. Trainers: Harold Johnson (HQ), Sara Kennedy, (HQ and CO) - 6 -

11 10:00 am 11:00 am PLENARY SESSION III: Promoting Advocacy What makes a parent a successful advocate for their Deaf/HOH child? Legal protection is available for parents of children with disabilities; sadly not all parents are aware of it. This presentation offers both parents and professionals the basics to successfully work with schools for their child s educational future. Protection of the parent/school relationship is the most important aspect of successfully advocating for a child with disabilities. Professionals can easily educate parents in this model of parent/school relationship building without jeopardizing their position. IDEA protects parents; it s up to the parents to protect their relationship with school personnel. Trainer: Andrea Marwah (IL) 11:00am 11:15 am Break 11:15am 12:15 pm PLENARY SESSION IV: Deaf/Hard of Hearing Guides & the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Person You Meet at Target. What s the Difference? How do you and your husband have sex? Do you sleep with your hearing aids/implants on? How do you use the drive-thru? Parents are full of questions; Deaf and Hard of Hearing Guides have some of the answers. A guide s journey informs a parent s journey; it doesn t define that journey. Karen and Stephanie will discuss innovative ways to include Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adults on the parenting journey and how chapters can infuse the Hands & Voices Deaf and Hard of Hearing Guide program. Presenter: Karen Putz (Il/HQ), Stephanie Olson (CO/HQ) 12:15-12:30 Closing Video & Hands & Voices Naming Circle - Our signature H&V closer Safe Travels! - 7 -
