1 INTR 102 American Sign Language VI Spring Semester 2017 Instructor Information: Marla Berkowitz Office Hours: Tuesdays from 6:00-7:00 pm Mountain in Canvas s Conference or by appointment, Marla need to put in your exact office hour and how to reach you: Big Blue Button (Conferences) or by , etc. Class Times and Locations (follow the daily schedule and/or roadmap below for specific dates/times): This class is conducted: Online beginning January 9 May 5, Course Description: The purpose of this lecture/lab course is to focus on the analysis and application of specific parameters of ASL, such as: classifiers, non-manual markers, fingerspelling and numbers. This course provides a review and expansion of the essential skills of American Sign Language. Emphasis is placed on the progressive development of expressive and receptive skills, study of authentic and representative literacy and cultural texts, and linguistic features of ASL. Upon completion, students should be able to communicate effectively, accurately, and creatively using American Sign Language. Pre-Requisites: Pre-requisite for this course is ASL V. Course Objectives: Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to do the following: Goal 1: To assist students in developing their ASL receptive and expressive skills. Objective 1: The student will be able to comprehend taught ASL signs, phrases, lexicalized fingerspelling, non-manual signals, number signs and linguistic features in both isolation, in sentences and in composition as signed through the assignments (e.g. workbook), and exams. (Receptive skill) Objective 2: The student will be able to demonstrate her/his expressive skills in a grammatically correct manner through presentations in ASL. The student will be able to perform a self-analysis report on his/her presentation. (Expressive skill) Goal 2: To assist students in understanding the linguistic features of American Sign Language. 2 Objective 1: The student will demonstrate his/her understanding and application of ASL linguistics features from the professor s teaching, videotext and textbooks through the assignments, presentations and exams. (Knowledge) Goal 3: To enhance students understanding about Deaf Community and Culture, and their application to ASL skills. Objective 1: The student will demonstrate an understanding about Deaf Community and Culture, and ASL poetry through the online discussions, weekly journal and exams. (Knowledge) Objective 2: The student will demonstrate an ability to utilize the Deaf cultural behaviors in his /her ASL signing. (Cultural behaviors) Required Materials: GoReact GoReact is an online video assessment system used to record, upload and to obtain feedback on assignments utilizing ASL. There is a fee payment online via UNC Canvas using GoReact app which you are to register with user name and password. When you are ready to submit your first assignment, it will pop up for you to pay once then you re all set to use it throughout the semester. 3 Equipment Digital camera or webcam for recording video assignments and video conferencing Course Requirements: Description Assignment 1 Partner Session Log: Students will have a face to face six (6) (On-going) meetings with their study partner using video technology and then submit a log for each session on blackboard. Each log will have a set of five (5) questions to be answered to earn full credit point. Logs are due at the end of the week it is assigned. Assignment 2 (On-going) Assignment 3 (See Roadmap for due dates) Assignment 4 (See Roadmap for due dates) Assignment 5 Due: 1/27 2/24 4/14 Assignment 6 1/30-2/3 2/27-3/3 5/1-5/5 Online Discussions: Participate regularly and consistently in online discussions about course readings, homework and activities doing ten (10) original posts and ten (10) response posts over the course of the semester. Journals: Write a journal for each set of ASL poems shown through the DVD of ASL Poetry. This will require seven (7) journal entries. In your journal, you must include the information designated in the Poetry Journal format located in the Assignments area of the course. Post your journal in Your Journal located in the Assignments area of the course. Homework: Complete four (4) exercises in the Signing Naturally Level 3 Student Workbook as indicated in the Roadmap. Type your answers in a Word document and submit it to the assignment tool. Presentations: Create three presentations and perform a selfanalysis report for each. The presentations will be: Your Talking About Money story (Unit 22); Your Making Major Decision story (Unit 23); Your Discussing Health Condition story (Unit 24). Record your presentation in YouTube and embed the private link in your self-analysis paper (see tip sheet on recording to YouTube in the Resources area). Be sure it s a hot link by clicking Insert (from options across in MS Word) click the world icon and follow the prompts. Submit the self-analysis report to the Assignment 4 tool. See the ASL Presentation rubric for details on grading criteria and points for the self-analysis report. Unit Exams: Complete the unit exams through Blackboard online. The exams will concentrate on receptive skills (e.g. phrases, composition, lexicalized fingerspelling and numbers) and knowledge of grammar and discourse. Guidelines For Use Of Technology Guidelines For Online Discussions Guidelines For Written Assignments Evaluation Method: The points for all the assignments in a course will add up to 100 points and letter grades are assigned as follows for UNDERGRADUATE classes: A = superior achievement of course objectives B = above average achievement of objectives (Reminder: you must maintain at least a B per class to meet graduation requirements) C/D = below average achievement of course objectives 60 or below is considered not passing. Student Code of Conduct: You are expected to practice academic honesty in every aspect of this course. Make sure you know and understand the pillars of the UNC Honor Code: Honesty, Trust, Responsibility, Respect, and Fairness. Identify three (3) or more ASL linguistic features you find most challenging using? What are your two (2) goals with learning ASL from this course? Be specific. Maximum video length should be two (2) minutes. How you came to learn about earning money in general 2. How have you used basic money and financial signs relevant to your personal life and/or work The overall idea is that discussing money is an everyday experience and that learning money-related signs is essential to your learning as an interpreter, but you are to discuss how to utilize this information in your studies/work. By the end date (1/13), respond to your classmate s posting your observations in GoReact regarding how they used the money-related signs in their scenarios. Partner Session 3: With a study partner, take turns in ASL-only to practice signs from pages in your workbook. Share real-life experiences you can apply these signs. Log due 2/10. 2/7 5.3 ASL Poetry DVD: View The Wall and the Quilt. 2/7 2/9 5.4 Online Discussion 3: By the first date (2/7) post your ASL video in GoReact and submit English text in the 5.4 online discussions a comparison of the details stated in the poem, The Wall and the Quilt. Details should reflect the historical and cultural aspects identified within the deaf community. By the end date (2/9), respond to your classmates postings using ASL in GoReact by identifying at least five (5) various linguistic features with relevant examples they used in their video discussion. Be detailed as possible to include a variety of sign concepts from Unit 23 relevant to the topic. Log due 2/17. 2/ ASL Poetry DVD: View Still Friends and Cocoon Child. No journal submissions for these poems are required. 2/14-2/16 All week All week 6.4 Online Discussion 4: By the first date (2/14), post in 6.4 online discussions written English six (6) ASL linguistic features unique to ASL poetry identified in the ASL poems, Still Friends and Cocoon Child. In addition, explain how these ASL features with its examples identified are different from ASL daily conversations. By the end date, (2/16), respond to your classmates a posting which of their examples resonates with your experiences. No video and journal submissions are required for these two ASL poems. 6.5 Assignment 5, Presentation 2 Preparation: Begin preparations for your Making Major Decision presentation. Due on 2/24.
