DATALOGGING Use and Utility Anna McMillan, Bay Audiology, NZ Grant Searchfield, University of Auckland Mithila Durai, University of Auckland
Overview Literature on Datalogging Research Questions Part I: Audiologist Survey Summary Part II: Client Data WIP Study Design Results Implications
Literature Users tend to over-report on daily use Laplante-Levesque et al (2014) Datalogging: 10.5h/day vs. Self report: 11.8h/day Several short periods of use: lower use, higher overreport Timmer (2014 poster) No difference in use for mild vs moderate hearing loss 1h/day speech-in-noise, 7h/day quiet or speech-in-quiet Total daily use: Austria & Canada < USA & Belgium
Research Questions: Part I What do NZ Audiologists think about the usefulness of datalogging? How are NZ Audiologists currently using datalogging? In what ways could the clinical utility of datalogging be improved?
Summary NZ Audiologists think DL is useful! For multiple types of clients/patients Think it s fairly accurate Not so keen on auto-adjustments Age & Experience Like to have lots of detail available Would like MORE info and control Good ideas
Research Questions: Part II Does DL match clients self-reports about HA use? Are a client s hours of use A) predicted by their degree of hearing loss, self-rating of hearing ability and/or HHI score B) do they predict a client s level of satisfaction with HAs? Are there differences between adults who use manual HA controls and those who do not? Age, degree of hearing loss, previous HA experience, satisfaction Do clients with higher levels of hearing aid technology use manual controls less often than clients with lower levels of technology?
Study Design Prospective Study Cohort non-randomised/non-controlled study Parametric statistical analyses Convenience sampling Jan-June 2015 Inclusion Criteria Over 18yrs old with HI acquired as an adult Exclusion Criteria Current otologic condition or middle ear surgery
n = 8 Private sector Audiologists Age: 21-25, years Years of experience: 1-12yrs Gender: 7 females, 1 male

Question Did hearing aid venting relate to hearing aid satisfaction or hours of use?
Question Did hearing aid venting relate to hearing aid satisfaction or hours of use? NO: no significant difference between hearing aid venting (open, occluded) and SADL total score and Question 4 IOI-HA (Satisfaction)
Question Did previous hearing aid use relate to hours of use?
Question Did previous hearing aid use relate to hours of use? YES: Significant difference between previous hearing aid use and Datalogging hours of use/day Exp 10 hrs/d; Non Exp 8 hrs/d
Question Did living situation affect use? (live alone, live with partner, live with extended family)
Question Did living situation affect use? (live alone, live with partner, live with extended family) NO significant difference
