1 1 A Pilot Project to Evaluate the Use of Exposure Control Plans for Bloodborne Pathogens In Private Dental Practices 2 OSAP in Partnership with NIOSH James M. McCrone, Ph.D., R.N Consultant 3 Purpose of the study: Evaluate the extent to which exposure control plans mandated by the OSHA BBP Standard (29CFR ) are implemented in private dental offices General Dental Practices Periodontics Pediatric Dentistry Oral Surgery 4 Background: The revision to OSHA's BBP standard added new requirements for employers, including additions to the exposure control plan and maintenance of a sharps injury log. Compliance with standards significantly reduces the risk that workers will contract a bloodborne disease in the course of their work This was primarily based on hospital data 5 6 Process Used for the Project Advisory committee Literature review Survey design & questions Survey population and distribution plan Field test Survey launch Analysis of results Advisory Committee 7 members 3 committee consultants 1
2 1 project manager 2 NIOSH staff Focus of the Survey Questions Practice characteristics Role of person(s) answering the questions ECP use or not Elements included in ECP Engineering controls and other IP&S activities used Focus of the Survey Questions PPE provided; training provided Occurrence of any exposure incidents and steps taken Potential use of info resources and organizations for assistance Facilitators and barriers Field Testing 9 active dental office team members (dentists, dental assistants and dental hygienists) Dental practices in 3 states in different regions (rural, suburban and large cities) Field Testing Solo general dentist & specialist-owned practice to large multi-specialty group practice Conducted pre-test of web version of survey than adapted based upon comments Survey Sample Publishing partner with double-opt-in list of 49,172 GP dentists and dental specialists in the U.S. Other dentist specialists including endodontists, oral pathologists, orthodontists, prosthodontists, and public health dentists were NOT included in the sample because they either do not work in private practice and/or were at relatively low risk of exposure to BBPs These other specialists totaled 8,597 which gave us a total survey population of 40,575 dentists Represents nearly 30% of private practice dentists 12 Survey Sample invitation with a link to the survey sent to 40,575 dentists and dentists in the selected specialties 2
