Course Description: This is a four-credit hour course with the duration of one academic year. The course consists of didactic and clinical components. The didactic component addresses the different aspects of diagnosing, managing and treating the dental problems of school age children. The clinical component is the first clinical course in Pediatric Dentistry. The course offers one session of three (3) hours each week for one academic year. It is a clinical setting in which the student acquires the motor skills necessary to render care for children. The student will have an opportunity to perform the clinical procedures commonly associated with children s dentistry. The concept of comprehensive care will be adapted so that the student develops an awareness of and appreciation for the total child. Patients with age ranging from 7 to 14 years will be selected according to course s requirements. Course Details: 1. Assessment of the child which includes the medical and dental history, behavior s classification, assessment of occlusion, oral habits, soft and hard tissues, carious lesions, and radiographic interpretation. 2. Practice of developing an appropriate and comprehensive prevention plan according to patient s needs. Students will practice monitoring patient s oral hygiene and diet habits. 3. Practice of patient s motivation towards prevention, plaque control, diet advice, topical fluoride therapy and fissure sealant. 4. Practice of operative dentistry for children, which includes local anesthesia, rubber dam placement, resin restorations, stainless steel crown, pulpal procedures for primary and young permanent teeth, and extraction of primary teeth. Space management appliances and employment of behavior management aids are included also. P a g e 4 16

Course Evaluation/Grading 1- Clinical Evaluation (50%) is based on the weekly sessions grading and it is composed of the following: A- Quality of the clinical work- 30% A number of instructors are assigned for this course. Each one of them will work with a group of five or six students for two-four weeks then rotate with other groups. The final grade (OUT OF 30) for the quality of work will be an average of the grades given by all instructors. B- Professionalism- 5% The evaluation for professionalism will include attendance, patient s booking, punctuality, neatness, professional attitude, rapport with the instructors and patients/parents, infection control, prevention and diet counselling on weekly basis. The final grade for the professionalism will be calculated by averaging the grades given by all the instructors. C- Effort-15% This part means meeting the course clinical requirements as described in the following table: Procedure Required Minimum (to pass the Maximum (to get the maximum 10 clinical part of the course) grades of the effort component) Treatment Plan 2 3 Completed case 1 2 Recall 1 2 Fissure Sealant 4 8 PRR or one surface restoration 2 3 Two surfaces restoration 2 3 Pulpotomy or Pulpectomy 2 3 Full crown coverage: Stainless 2 3 steel crown (SSC) or strip crown Extraction 1 2 Space Maintainer 1 2 The above are the Maximum requirements accepted for the course. It is expected that the students would use their time wisely and show their maximum effort. If the student managed to complete the entire maximum required clinical procedures he will then get the 15 grades (i.e. 15%) of the clinical effort component of the evaluation. For a case to be considered as a finished case, at least 80% of treatment has to be performed by the student. P a g e 5 16

Notice: The students MUST ensure they manage to do AT LEAST the minimum course clinical requirements that were selected for each dental procedure in order to pass the course. 2- Didactic Evaluation (50%) is composed of the following: A- Knowledge- 54% The knowledge of the student on clinical procedure being performed or on related topics will be tested on weekly basis by the instructor in each clinical session. B- First Written Assessment- 8% C- Second Written Assessment- 10% D- Third Written Assessment- 8% E- Final Written Assessment- 20% P a g e 6 16

Clinic s Policy First Visit: The following is expected from each student during clinical sessions 1. Record personal data and case history Dental / Medical. 2. Introduce the child to the clinic apply the tell show and do technique. 3. Examine the child and record finding. 4. Take necessary radiographs and models if indicated. 5. Give oral hygiene instruction 6. Rubber cup prophylaxis and topical fluoride application (if indicated) should be done, following approval by the instructor. 7. Provide the patients parents with a diet sheet, give them instructions on how to complete it and encourage them to bring it next visit. 8. Formulate a treatment plan on a sheet of paper (if time allows). 9. Present treatment plan to the instructor. When approved, rewrite the treatment plan in the chart and have your instructor sign it. In addition, enter all patient s records into the SALUD system and obtain your instructor s authorization. Second Visit 1. Following your instructor s approval, Proceed with treatment as planned. 2. At each visit, the first ten minutes should be spent in teaching the patient the proper way of brushing and emphasize the importance of prevention. 3. Collect the completed diet sheet and analyze it (during the week) and give the parents and patient appropriate diet advice in the following visit. 4. If the patient has rampant caries or large cavities in two quadrants or more, gross excavation of caries should be done and temporary fillings are placed. NOTES: Punctuality, neatness, professional attitude and rapport with the instructors are variables to be considered in the final grade of the students. Traumatic pulp exposure or perforation of pulpal floor attracts a failure grade. Students are expected to complete every case started. P a g e 7 16

Student s Responsibilities: 1. Give an appointment to his/her patient. 2. Make sure that the patient attends the clinic. Re-confirm the appointment with parent 24 hours before the appointment.
