GLOBAL DIAGNOSIS A NEW VISION OF DENTAL DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLANNING 8 Hours CE Lecture Credit J. William Robbins, DDS, MA With the increased emphasis on interdisciplinary treatment in recent years, the deficiencies associated with traditional methods of diagnosis and treatment planning have become more evident and problematic. Historically, the treatment plan was primarily dictated by information provided by study casts which were mounted on a sophisticated articulator in centric relation. At that time in history, the primary tools available for treating the complex restorative patient were functional crown lengthening surgery and increasing the vertical dimension of occlusion. The treatment plan was simply based on restorative space, anterior tooth coupling and resistance and retention form of the final preparations, with no focus on placing the teeth in the correct position in the face. Practitioners did not have access to advanced periodontal, orthodontic, orthognathic surgery and plastic surgery tools that are currently available. With the advent and common usage of these new treatment modalities, the historical method of diagnosis and treatment planning is no longer adequately serving our profession. It is the purpose of this course to provide a systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment planning the complex interdisciplinary dental patient with a common language that may be used by the orthodontist, periodontist, and oral and maxillofacial surgeon, as well as the restorative dentist. The four Global diagnoses which dictate all interdisciplinary treatment planning will be defined. A set of questions will then be presented which will aid the interdisciplinary team in the diagnosis and treatment planning of the complex dental patient. - Global Diagnosis - Communication with specialists - Principles of Esthetics - A systematic approach to facial, esthetic, and functional diagnoses - Global Diagnoses o Short or Hyperactive Maxillary Lip o Altered Passive Eruption o Dentoalveolar Extrusion o Skeletal Deficiency o Combination Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to: 1. Describe 4 Global Diagnoses 2. Describe the 5 CORE Questions with their corresponding treatment options 3. Complete a Global diagnosis form which will lead to a comprehensive diagnosis 4. Communicate with the interdisciplinary team
CLEAR ALIGNER THERAPY 8 Hours CE Lecture/Participation Credit David Galler, DDS Clear Aligner Therapy via Invisalign and Cosmetic Orthodontics are becoming a feature of every dental office in the country, as demand for non-invasive smiles increases. The most common dental cosmetic malocclusion is crowding of teeth. This course focuses on the ways to correct crowding with use of Invisalign. All modalities will be reviewed and case examples of each shown and discussed. Special attention will be given to IPR and use of the Galler Spacing Technique. Interproximal Reduction (IPR) is often a major roadblock for dentists when they think about treating Clear Aligner Therapy cases. The clinician has created a system that can create near perfect interproximal spaces every time. The Galler Spacing Technique is safe and 100% reproducible which allows the novice and experienced dentist to achieve successful results when they follow this protocol. During this hands-on session, attendees are given the essential instruments used and have the opportunity to practice on typodont models. LEARN: How to solve crowding with Invisalign How to effectively perform IPR via GST How to create a near perfect.5mm space between teeth in record time This HANDS-ON course teaches how to create a perfect space easily without damaging adjacent teeth when using IPR in conjunction with Orthodontics. *Course closed to first 40 current Invisalign providers SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH 8:00AM 8:45AM NCAGD MEMBER BUSINESS MEETING & BREAKFAST Please note that this event is restricted to NCAGD Member Dentists only. No spouses or staff please. 9:00AM 5:00PM MEDICAL AND DENTAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE MOST COMMON PHYSICIAN-PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS! 8 Hours CE Lecture Credit Harold L. Crossley, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D. Should I use caution when prescribing NSAIDs with antihypertensives? Can NSAIDs cause atrial fibrillation? Can I prescribe an
NSAID in a patient who takes warfarin? Can I prescribe fluconazole (Diflucan) for a patient taking clopidogrel (Plavix). There are hundreds of drug interactions but only a handful is clinically relevant. Is antibiotic prophylaxis required for patients with orthopedic prostheses? Your patients are living longer thanks to their medications but many of the physician-prescribed medications used by your patients have dental implications and side effects affecting your treatment plan. Some medications are more likely to cause violent behavior and others can cause a burning mouth syndrome. What analgesic is the safest for a pregnant patient? This presentation includes the indications, contraindications, and side effects of the most commonly prescribed medications. Many of these medications were not approved when you took your pharmacology course in dental school. These medications represent one third of all prescriptions taken by your dental patients and familiarity with these drugs will provide the dental practitioner with a better appreciation for the health profile of your dental patient. AT THE CONCLUSION OF THIS COURSE, THE ATTENDEES WILL KNOW: Medications that could adversely interact with dental drugs Why your patient is taking their medications What oral side effects may be caused by these medications Maximum doses for commonly prescribed pain medications When not to prescribe NSAIDs How to combine analgesics to maximize their effects Current recommendations for SBE and orthopedic prosthesis prophylaxis *This presentation is useful for the entire dental team. SLEEP PROSTHODONTICS 8 Hours CE Lecture Credit Jeff Rouse, DDS Sleep Prosthodontics is the study of airway and its impact on the stomatognathic system whereby Sleep Dentistry is largely recognized as the study of an oral appliance and its impact on the airway. Sleep Prosthodontics addresses the why (i.e., Why are patients developing malocclusions, creating myofacial pain symptoms, and wearing their dentition?) where Sleep Dentistry addresses the how (i.e., How does an appliance assist nocturnal breathing?). Occlusal theories are man-made mechanical constructs designed to increase restorative predictability. After 50 years of debate, there is still no agreement on ideal occlusal philosophy. This lecture will argue that one reason for the confusion is that occlusal principles are based on mechanical assumptions and not biologic realities. One example is centric relation. It is embraced because of the mechanical ease of transfer from articulator to mouth even though it is seldom found biologically.
Dr. Rouse will explain common modes of tooth damage and reconstruction break down through biology rather than engineering. The three central pattern generators (CPG)s controlling breathing, chewing and swallowing will be highlighted along with factors that can prevent those CPGs from functioning in harmony. Malocclusions can minimize the oral volume, alter the chewing pattern and provide an increased opportunity for wear and fracture. This lecture will also focus on the bidirectional nature of airway impingement and dental malocclusion. This 1-day lecture will present the key features of many of the popular designs of MAA, discussing the advantages and disadvantages that will yield in an Appliance Algorithm. Dr. Rouse will discuss a demonstration of Appliance Seating, incorporating titration and verification modalities, including multidisciplinary functionalities across specialties. Airway Prosthodontics and Airway-based occlusion is no longer simply trending, it is a part of our daily regimen. Join Dr. Rouse in an engaging discussion and lecture, explicating the myriad of issues that are all connected to Airway, past, present, and future. UPON THE CONCLUSION OF THIS LECTURE, ATTENDEES WILL BE ABLE TO: Clarify the sleep-disease connection including dental diseases such as caries, periodontal disease, dental erosion, and nocturnal bruxism Illuminate the unique role that dentists and dental hygienists play in resolving sleep and airway issues Create an algorithm for appliance selection and simplify the seating and titration process Understand the value of high-resolution pulse oximetry in assisting dentists to envision airway transformation with an oral appliance 9:00AM 12:30PM EMBEZZLEMENT: FOR YOUR EYES (AND EARS) ONLY 4 Hours CE Lecture Credit Susan Gunn Do you have the gut feeling that all is not safe and secure in your practice? Could your hard-earned money be walking out the door...without you? You re a smart person, but can you be deceived? HEAR HAIR-RAISING (AND EYE-OPENING) STORIES: - Dissolving the myth that insurance checks cannot be stolen - Is it logical to hire someone handling patient payments without reference checking?
- Why be wary of staff members who stir up bad feelings in your practice, or routinely complain about co-workers? A course like no other, attendees explore case studies of practice vulnerabilities that entice dishonesty, sometimes in those who are trusted most. Learn easy ways to weave accountability threads throughout your systems and procedures, and implement practical safeguards to help your practice avoid becoming the victim of financial dishonesty or deceit. A recent attendee implemented suggested safeguards only to discover he had been embezzled. Are you next? *This half-day course is restricted to 80 dentists and spouses only. 1:00PM-5:00PM TAKE CHARGE NOW: QUICKBOOKS ESSENTIALS FOR YOUR PRACTICE 4 Hours CE Lecture Credit Susan Gunn Accounting is certainly not a trendy topic among dentists but Susan s QuickBooks classes are in high demand! They are informative, interactive and FUN! Susan will show you everything you need to maximize your QuickBooks beyond tax accounting, to a highly effective yet simple practice management tool for financial analysis and goal planning. Is your payroll service the best option for your practice? Do you understand your reports? Build your QuickBooks confidence and learn basic weekly and monthly financial reports. Discover common mistakes many practices make. (Then laugh, because you ve done exactly the same thing!) Recommended for novice and experienced users, gain practical and simplified advice on getting the most out of QuickBooks in your practice, or perhaps the inspiration you need to take QuickBooks off the shelf, once and for all. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: - Understand the importance of a simplified, organized and understandable chart of accounts - Define back to back accountability between QuickBooks and the practice management software - How to manage petty cash, credit cards, and patient payment plan transactions *This half day course is limited to 85 due to the wide range technical & accounting knowledge of attendees.
