1 PROMOTING RECOVERY FROM BINGE EATING DISORDER Adrienne Ressler, MA, LMSW, CEDS Jessica Setnick, MS, RD, CEDRD AS MANY AS HALF OF ALL INDIVIDUALS SEEKING MEDICAL HELP FOR OBESITY HAVE BED ALTHOUGH THEY WILL BE OFFERED MANY OPTIONS FOR WEIGHT LOSS, FEW WILL EVER RECEIVE TREATMENT FOR THEIR EATING DISORDER THE REAL VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY LIES NOT IN SEEKING NEW LANDSCAPES, BUT IN HAVING NEW EYES. -MARCEL PROUST 3 TYPES OF BINGE EATING 1

2 UNDER EATING AND OVER EATING ARE TWO PARTS OF ONE CYCLE. DEPRIVATION SENSITIVE Caused by actual or mental restriction of certain foods or food in general Solved with an appropriate daytime meal schedule, adequate energy intake, and eating enjoyable foods Enjoyable eating may require practice, permission and mindfulness as relinquishing old rules may take time MANY FEELINGS FEEL EMPTY LIKE HUNGER, BUT NONE OF THEM ARE FIXED BY FOOD. AFFECT-TRIGGERED Eating in response to strong emotions Solved with more appropriate response to feelings This will require identifying feelings, or at least identifying them separately from hunger Counseling is needed for appropriate responses to feelings DIETITAN SECRET Shhhh Patients are convinced that food or weight is causing their bad feelings - this explains why weight loss is the best solution However they are feeling after eating is how they were feeling before they were eating Use this to help patients recognize strong feelings before they lead to eating behavior DISSOCIATIVE Eating used to numb out, forget my problems or wind down Having trouble ending a meal Key words: bored, overwhelmed Help patients plan ahead for activities Counseling is needed to identify need for escape May be a sign of anxiety or depression requiring medication 2
