3 Mass Screening Events Three Mass Screening events held in October 2010 at Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau There were 7 activities as part of the screening: Balance Test, Waist Circumference Screening, Weight Screening, Height Screening, BMI test, Blood Pressure Test, and Body Composition Test There were 779 screenings performed and participants could have participated in multiple screenings Mass Screening events did not screen for Cholesterol or Glucose Activity UAA UAF UAS Balance Test Waist Circumference Screening Weight Screening Height Screening BMI Test Blood Pressure Test Body Composition Test
4 Mass Screening Event Results Blood Pressure Numbers Blood pressure is a measure of how hard the blood pushes against the walls of your arteries as it moves through your body Normal blood pressure is 120/80 High blood pressure is 140/90 or higher 123 participants with blood pressure test 20 participants or 16% had high blood pressure (140/90) High blood pressure can damage the heart, brain, kidneys, or eyes. This damage causes problems like coronary artery disease, stroke, and kidney failure. 4
5 Mass Screening Event Results Body Composition Numbers Staying at a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for your health. It can help prevent serious health problems, including: Heart disease Stroke High blood pressure Type 2 diabetes Sleep apnea 126 participants with body composition screenings 44 participants or 35% had abnormal numbers Over 21% body fat in men ages Over 34% body fat in women ages
6 Wellness Breaks 19 wellness breaks occurred between July and December 2010 Participants could have attended multiple presentations, activities, screenings and tests 287 screenings occurred during the 19 wellness breaks Activity Number of Tests Cholesterol/Glucose Screening 114 Blood Pressure Screening 91 Body Composition Screening 82 6
7 Wellness Breaks Results Blood Cholesterol Abnormal Results High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Good Cholesterol 24 participants (21%) had HDL under 40 mg/dl Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Bad Cholesterol 23 participants (20%) had LDL over 130 mg/dl Triglycerides 25 participants (22%) had triglycerides over 150 mg/dl Total Cholesterol 31 participants (27%) had total cholesterol over 200 mg/dl *High Cholesterol is 240 mg/dl and above *Borderline High Cholesterol is mg/dl *Normal is less than 200 mg/dl *Based on 2011 Vitality Group cholesterol measures 7
8 Wellness Breaks Results Blood Pressure Abnormal Numbers 23 participants (25%) had blood pressure over 140/90 Glucose 18 participants (16%) had glucose over 100 mg/dl Blood Glucose Abnormal Numbers Glucose 18 participants (16%) had glucose over 100 mg/dl Body Composition Abnormal Numbers 82 body composition screenings 37 participants or 45% had abnormal numbers Over 21% body fat in men ages Over 34% body fat in women ages
9 IHP Results 737 IHP sessions in October, 639 in November, and 538 in December During IHP sessions there were 723 Biometric tests completed Comparison of the initial to final biometric readings at IHP sessions will be in the annual report Blood Cholesterol High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Good Cholesterol Out of 634 tests, 193 (30%) had HDL under 40 mg/dl Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Bad Cholesterol Out of 634 tests, 98 (15%) had LDL over 130 mg/dl Total Cholesterol Glucose Out of 634 tests, 273 (43%) had total cholesterol over 200 mg/dl Out of 129 tests, 37 (29%) had glucose over 100 mg/dl 9
10 IHP Results Blood Pressure Out of 646 participants, 93 participants (14%) had blood pressure over 140/90 Body Composition Abnormal Numbers Out of 619 participants, 504 participants or 81% had abnormal numbers Over 21% body fat in men ages Over 34% body fat in women ages
11 Observations The IHP is attracting the right individuals that want to improve their health and lower their risk factors For the IHP, require that all tests are performed at the initial and final IHP session The University should consider tracking the individual results for the mass screenings and wellness breaks This will establish a baseline to measure improvement and incentives in wellness program Add Cholesterol and Glucose screenings at mass screening events to educate employees on risks of high cholesterol and diabetes Develop incentives/challenges for the mass screenings on the three campuses to increase participation E.g. challenge between campuses for highest participation Begin to tie incentives/penalties to outcomes once tracking begins 11
