Jeny McCray and Cristiana Ventura Final Report March 8, 2017 Topic Description COM 573 Our condition is gastroparesis. It is a chronic condition where the stomach doesn t process and empty food properly. Because of the delayed emptying, people with gastroparesis are unable to eat many foods that interfere with digestion. Symptoms of gastroparesis include early satiety and fullness, nausea, pain, and vomiting. Because of the symptoms, patients have a difficult time taking in the proper amount of calories to maintain their weight, and many end up with dehydration and malnutrition. Treatment options are limited;; although there are a few drugs that are used to treat gastroparesis, they tend to have severe side effects or aren t effective enough to make a difference. Because of this, doctors suggest trying to control symptoms with a lifestyle change by eating multiple small meals throughout the day instead of three large ones. Unfortunately, many patients aren t sure what types of foods are gastroparesis-friendly, and they still have problems with symptoms, even though they are eating smaller portions more frequently. We propose to create a website, infographic, and app that help people with gastroparesis find foods they can safely eat while maintaining nutrition as much as possible. Overall Goal Our goal is to educated people about gastroparesis and to help those with gastroparesis find tools and resources to make their lives easier.

Website Goal: To educate people about gastroparesis and provide diet suggestions and a food diary to keep track of foods that work well and foods that cause unwanted symptoms. Audience: According to the US National Institutes of Health, as many as 5 million Americans are afflicted with gastroparesis. It has been estimated that 1/3 of sufferers have idiopathic gastroparesis, where the cause is not known. Another 1/3 have diabetic gastroparesis, while the remaining 1/3 have gastroparesis as a result of surgeries, illnesses, or damage to the vagus nerve. Gastroparesis affects men, but women are more likely to get the disorder. It is estimated that 80% of gastroparesis sufferers are women. It affects all races, and the young and old, although the main audience for our project is anyone of cooking age and older. Many patients aren t sure what types of foods are gastroparesis-friendly, and they still have problems with symptoms, even though they are eating smaller portions more frequently in order to aid digestion. In online support groups for gastroparesis, the most commonly asked question is always, What can I (or my child) eat? We propose to create a website that help people with gastroparesis find foods and recipes they can safely eat while maintaining nutrition and a functional food diary that will allow users to track foods that work well and foods that cause unwanted symptoms. The website would also include detailed information of the condition itself. The main audience of the website would be people with mild to moderate gastroparesis (and friends/family members) from all three categories (idiopathic, diabetic, and other) who can still take in calories by mouth. Depending on the severity of the condition, some people have to be on tube feedings, and we would exclude this group from our audience for the website. User Groups: 1. People who have recently been diagnosed with gastroparesis and are trying to find detailed information about the condition, to find the types of foods they can eat, and to keep a food diary to track foods that work well and foods that cause unwanted symptoms;; 2. People who have had gastroparesis for a while and want to find food and recipes, share recipes and food suggestions, and to keep a food diary to track foods that work well and foods that cause unwanted symptoms;; 3. People who know someone with gastroparesis and are trying to find detailed information about the condition.

Personas: 1. Name: Ronald Moore, 54 Description: Recently diagnosed with diabetic gastroparesis Quote: I m not sure what I can eat. Goals: Being new to gastroparesis, Ronald wants to find detailed information about the condition and foods that won t cause symptoms. His doctor has requested that Ronald fill out a food diary to find the types of foods he can tolerate. 2. Name: Stephanie Collins, 37 Description: Daughter has had post-surgical gastroparesis for five years Quote: I d like to share recipes with other patients. Goals: Because her 11-year-old daughter, Megan, has had gastroparesis for five years, Stephanie is well-aware of the types of foods Megan can tolerate, but she continues to keep a food diary to look for patterns. She has built up a collection of gastroparesis-friendly recipes and would like to share them with others. 3. Name: Carlos Martinez, 61 Description: Son was recently diagnosed with idiopathic gastroparesis Quote: I don t understand why he won t eat. Goals: Burt knows that his son, Ben, has a stomach condition, but he doesn t know much about the it. He would like to find out more and why Ben refuses to eat certain foods. Site Structure Diagram: See attached diagram #1 Content Sources: Gastroparesis. G-Pact, January 31, 2017, Rees Parish, Carol. What to eat, Idiopathics. The Gastroparesis & Dysmotilities Association, January 31, 2017, Gotter, Ana. "Recipes." Cookingforgp.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 01 Feb Prototyping Software: For the website, we used the prototyping tool JustInMind.com.

Final Homepage Wireframes: See attached diagrams #2 and #3 Testing Results: For the most part, the website design seems clear to users. They understand how to navigate to find information for a variety of tasks and felt there was good information in the majority of sections. Both users found the Food Calculator confusing, so we will change the name to Meal Planner and write a short description of the tool for the Meal Planner page. All other tasks were easily completed. Website Questions: 1. First, what s your occupation? What do you do all day? 2. Now, roughly how many hours a week altogether just a ballpark estimate would you say you spend using the Internet, including Web browsing and , at work and at home? 3. What kinds of sites are you looking at when you browse the web? 4. Do you have any favorite Web sites? 5. Do you look up recipes online? If so, do you have a favorite site? User 1: 1. Job: Instructional Technician 2 for UWT and Tech Support for Apple. Spends his day helping people troubleshoot and better use technology. 2. Spends about 56 hours a week online. 3. Usually spends time on Netflix, social media, work-related websites (apple.com, uw.edu, adobe.com). 4. Favorite websites are apple.com, google.com, b&h.com, and amazon.com. 5. Does not look for recipes online. User 2: 1. Job: Administrative assistant in a medical office. Does a variety of support materials, mostly on the computer. 2. Spends about 35 hours a week online. 3. Looks at different news sites, Facebook, and the Weather Channel. 4. Favorite websites are travelocity.com, facebook.com, and weather.com. 5. She looks for recipes online, but she doesn t have a favorite recipe site. Website Tasks: 1. You have never heard of gastroparesis, find out what it is. 2. What can people with gastroparesis eat? 3. You want to find meals that gastroparesis people can eat. 4. You have gastroparesis and want to track what you had for dinner, what do you do? 5. You aren t sure what to have for dinner or what your body will allow for tonight, what do you do?

User 1: 1. He clicked About Gastroparesis in the main navigation. He read the content and found out what gastroparesis is. 2. He hovered over Nutrition in the main navigation and clicked on Recommended Diet. He read about the 3-step diet, but wanted more specific information about what he could eat in each step. 3. He hovered over Nutrition in the main navigation and clicked on Recipes. He then selected a specific recipe. 4. He hovered over Tools in the main navigation and clicked on Food Diary. 5. He wasn t sure what to do here and was confused about what the Food Calculator was. User 2: 1. She clicked on the About Gastroparesis button. She found the information to be very informative, short and to the point. She found information about the condition and felt it would give her a good direction on what to discuss with her doctor if she had the condition. 2. She hovered over Nutrition in the main navigation and clicked on Recommended Diet. She read and found general information about the recommended diet such as eating smaller meals more frequently and a basic description about the 3-step diet. She wanted more specific information about the 3 steps. 3. She hovered over Nutrition in the main navigation and clicked on Recipes. She then selected a specific recipe. Final Analysis: For the website, a major strength is that our prototype is clear and concise, and follows our site structure diagram. After testing, we are more confident that our navigation made sense to our users and they can easily find what they need. A weakness would be some of our language on the site. We use some medical jargon which was difficult to follow and the tools section needed more clarity and refinement. Moving forward to make this website a successful reality for people to access and to find useful, we need to go through out site content and test more of our copy with user testing. We would also need a developer to do all of the back end of the website, and to help us actually make our tools functional. Infographic Goal: The goal for our infographic is to educate people about the basics of the condition.

Audience: Specifically our audience are those who know someone with gastroparesis but want more information about what the condition entails. User Group: 1. People who know someone with gastroparesis and/or are trying to find basic information about the condition. Persona: 1. Name: Mark Simpson, 42 Description: Friend of someone with gastroparesis Quote: What is gastroparesis? Goals: Mark would like to know more about Liz s gastroparesis so he can be supportive and sensitive to her needs. Infographic See attached diagram #4 Final Analysis A strength for our infographic is that it visually pleasing and cohesive throughout. The design intentionally forces the eye to start at the top and move its way down. The dimensions could also be a weakness considering it may be difficult to add to webpages without creating a shadow box to enlarge. Also, the text is a little small at first sight, which may be tough for some users to see. Moving forward, this deliverable is just about complete- but going over the copy once more to see if it can be condensed would be a good idea, and maybe creating an infographic with different dimensions could be helpful as well. App Goal: To provide diet suggestions and a food diary to keep track of foods that work well and foods that cause unwanted symptoms. Audience: The ideal audience for this app are those with gastroparesis who to track their diet and symptoms, as well as find recipes and food that are gastroparesis friendly.

User Groups: 1. People who have recently been diagnosed with gastroparesis and are trying to find the types of foods they can eat, and to keep a food diary to track foods that work well and foods that cause unwanted symptoms;; 2. People who have had gastroparesis for a while and want to find food and recipes, share recipes and food suggestions, and to keep a food diary to track foods that work well and foods that cause unwanted symptoms. Personas: 1. Name: Makenzie Coulter, 19 Description: Recently diagnosed with idiopathic gastroparesis Quote: I m losing weight. What foods can I have that will give me the most calories and protein? Goals: Makenzie is having a hard time ingesting (and keeping down) enough food to maintain weight and nutrition. She wants to know the types of food that will give her the calories and protein she needs while not slowing down her digestive system. 2. Name: Lisa Chen, 39 Description: Has had diabetic gastroparesis for a year Quote: What are good foods to travel with? Goals: Lisa is going on a trip and needs snack suggestions that travel well. User Flow App Prototype See attached diagram #5 Testing Results The tasks seemed pretty easy for the users to complete. Both users liked the design and how simple the app is. The main thing learned was how important directions are, specifically for compiling diary entries and explaining the importance of generating reports. Furthermore, user 1 had trouble finding the level 2 recipes on the recipes page. We will add the option to sort through the recipes by levels and by meal type. We will also clarify language for making reports, instead of Compile we will have the button say Make Report. App Questions: 1. Now, roughly how many hours a week altogether just a ballpark estimate would you say you spend using app on your phone? 2.What kinds of apps do you use most often? 3.Do you have any favorite apps?

4.Do you use any apps to track or record information with? If so what are they? 5.What do you like about them? User 1 Notes: 1.Probably about 20 hours a week total. 2.The apps he uses most are mainly social media apps including, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, as well as Notes and When I Work. 3.His favorite apps include Instagram and Waze. 4. Apps he uses to track information include: the Calorie Tracker, Notes, When I Work. 5. He likes that the Calorie Tracker gives a quick report of how many he ate and how many are left in the day. It is easy to see previous days and trends for the month. For Notes, it is easy to add what you want and there isn t much structure. User 2 Notes: 1.She uses apps for about 5-7 hours a week. 2.The apps she uses most often include Facebook, The Skimm, Reminders, mymail 3. Her favorite app is The Skimm and Facebook. 4. She uses MyFitnessPal to track her Atkins diet. She also uses her Calendar app to track what she is doing or already did. 5. She likes that MyFitnessPal sends reminders to input information. She likes that the Calendar does the same thing and is easy to make recurring events. App Tasks: 1.Find a recipe for pasta. 2.You want to track what you ate for breakfast, what do you do? 3.You aren t sure how severe your gastroparesis is, where do you go to help find out? 4You want to find a recipe that is Level 2 friendly, find some. 5. You have a doctor appointment coming up and you want to report on how your gastroparesis has been doing, get a report for what you have tracked User 1 Notes: 1.From the homepage he clicked Gastroparesis Friendly Recipes, Dinner recipes and the underlined Shrimp Pasta recipe. 2. He clicked the Diary button on the homepage, then he clicked New Entry and pretended to add an entry and submitted it. 3. He clicked Recommended Diet and read through to each level to find level sounds most like his. He said he still wouldn t be sure how severe it is because he would want to see how severe others gp is compared to his. 4. He click the recipes button on the homepage, and didn t see an option to sort by levels, so he went back to recommended diet to view each level recipes. 5. He went to the diary, and to compile, but way confused with the wording on what to do from there. He suggested to use exact direction on the page and to use make a report instead of compile.

User 2 Notes: 1.She clicked Gastroparesis Friendly Recipes, Dinner and the Shrimp Pasta recipe option. 2. She clicked the Diary button on the homepage, then clicked New Entry 3. She was on the homepage for a while, and read it completely, then clicked Recommended Diet and read through each diet level. 4. She went to Recommended Diet on the homepage, then clicked Level 2, and the View Level 2 Recipes. 5. She went to Diary then to the Calendar View, and said she would stay here to report dates and show the doctor the calendar. App Store Description Name: GP Foods Description: GP Foods is a tool for people suffering with gastroparesis. It offers a meal planner and a personalized food diary to track food and symptoms. You can create a report of your Food Diary results to share with your doctors. GP Foods also offers a collection of gastroparesis-friendly recipes shared by people who know the condition and what types of food work well for patients. Final Analysis A strength for our app is its visual design and that it mocks our original user flow fairly well. We refined the user flow based on changes to our text copy, and made the app suite more cohesive.

The homepage to the app is simple and easy to use. A weakness would be the original language we used for compiling the diary entries, which we have edited since the user testing. Also some of our dimensions are a bit off when applied to the prototyping app, Invision. Moving forward, to make this a functional and purchasable app, we would need to hire programmers to develop the back end, and we would need to market the app to our target audience, hence we would need to do our research on programmatic ads and somehow contacting that audience.
