1 BLOOD CELL S AND HEMOGLOBIN VALUE IN NORMAL AND DIABETIC DOGS* E. MARIE SMITH, M.T. From the Department of Surgery of the University of Chicago I. ERYTHROCYTE, LEUKOCYTE AND HEMOGLOBIN VALUE OF NORMAL DOGS Blood studies were conducted weekly on 6 apparently normal dogs over a period ranging from three to six weeks, with a view to recording further experimental data on the average value for blood cell counts and hemoglobin in normal dogs. Menkin, Kadish, and Sommers 2,3 found the average leukocyte count of normal dogs to range from,00 to 22,450 in studies on 15 normal dogs. Wells and Sutton 1 gave the normal leukocyte count as,000 to,400 in adult dogs, while Mayerson 1 (130) in a study of 60 normal dogs gave the average leukocyte count as,165. Wintrobe 4 found the average erythrocyte count to be 7.35 millions in a study of. Wells and Sutton 1 gave the normal erythrocyte count as 5.60 to 7.60 millions; Burnett 1 (7) gave the normal red cell count as 6.00 millions; and Mayerson 1 (130), the average erythrocyte count as 6.16 millions. Mayerson gave the average hemoglobin value as per 0 cc. of blood, and Wintrobe 4 found the average hemoglobin value in 3 normal male dogs to.be In these studies, 3 normal female dogs and were used. Blood was drawn from the femoral vein and placed in tubes containing dried heparin. Erythrocyte and leukocyte counts were done in the usual manner using a Neubauer bright-line counting chamber. Hemoglobin estimations were run (in duplicate), using the Evelyn photoelectric colorimetric method. The results have been tabulated for individual normal animals in table 1. Variation in the hemoglobin during a period of one week ranged from 0.1 gram to 1.8 with one exception. The variation in leukocyte counts was from 0 to 6,00 in one week. Erythrocyte counts varied from 0 to 2.2 millions in one weeks. Table 2 shows group averages and range of variation. From the foregoing data the following statements may be made: In 6 normal dogs, the erythrocyte count ranged from 4.05 millions to.37 millions with an average of 7.08 millions; the leukocyte count ranged from,450 to 22,050 with an average of 13,065; and the hemoglobin value ranged from.00 to.70 with an average of per 0 cc. of blood. There seemed to be no significant difference due to sex in the 6 dogs studied in either erythrocyte count, leukocyte count, or hemoglobin value. * Received for publication, April 22, on May 20

5 BLOOD CELL S IN DOGS 461 II. ERYTHROCYTE, LEUKOCYTE AND HEMOGLOBIN VALUE OP DIABETIC DOGS Blood studies were conducted weekly on diabetic dogs over a period ranging from three to six weeks, with a view to comparing values for erythrocyte count, leukocyte count, and hemoglobin with the corresponding values for normal animals. The variation in values obtained from one week to the next were as follows: the change in value of hemoglobin ranged from 0.2 to 1.88, the change in leukocyte count ranged from 50 to 20,000, and the variation in erythrocyte count ranged from 20,000 to 4,0,000. Table 4 shows group averages and range of variation. In summary it may be stated that in diabetic dogs, the average values for erythrocyte count and hemoglobin were lower and the average value for leukocyte count was higher than in 6 normal dogs.
