1 New Mexico Content Standards and PHYSICAL EDUCATION Benchmarks GRADES K-8

3 Overview This document supports the Content Standards and related Benchmarks for Physical Education Programs in the areas of: movement forms development of motor skills knowledge, ability, and promotion of a physically active, healthy lifestyle responsibility for personal behaviors in physical activity settings respects differences among people in physical activity settings recognizes that physical activity settings support enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction (The Content Standards and Benchmarks for Physical Education were adopted in 1997). PE

4 Content Standards For Physical Education Content Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms. Content Standard 2: Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills. Content Standard 3: Exhibits knowledge and ability to participate in a physically active lifestyle. Content Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. Content Standard 5: Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings. Content Standard 6: Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings. Content Standard 7: Understands that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.

5 Content Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms. Demonstrate competency in selected motor skills; demonstrate competency in selected non-motor patterns; and demonstrate competency in selected skills utilizing age appropriate equipment. Demonstrate proficiency in combining basic skills for participating in a variety of physical fitness activities: aquatics, dance, outdoor pursuits, individual activities/ sports, team activities/sports; and demonstrate proficiency using basic offensive and defensive strategies while playing a modified version of a learned team and individual sport. PE

6 Content Standard 2: Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills. Demonstrate concepts of body, effort, space, and relationships in movement; demonstrate motor skills, motor behaviors, and motor learning concepts in increasingly complex movement situations; and demonstrate critical elements of fundamental and specialized movement skills. Demonstrate competency in the use of the concepts of body, effort, space, and relationships in movement; demonstrate competency in the use of motor skills, motor behaviors, and motor learning concepts in increasingly complex movement situations; and demonstrate competency in the use of critical elements of fundamental and specialized movement skills. Content Standard 3: Exhibits knowledge and ability to participate in a physically active lifestyle. Select and participate regularly in health-related physical activities for enjoyment; and identify the benefits gained from regular physical activity. Be able to set personal physical activity goals and participate in individualized programs of physical activity and exercise; and determine long-term benefits that may result from regular participation in physical activity.

7 Content Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. Match different types of physical activities with the health-related physical fitness components; participate in moderate to vigorous physical activities in a variety of settings; and begin to interpret the results and demonstrate understanding of the significance of information provided by measures of physical fitness. Participate in physical activities that address each health-related physical fitness component; assess personal fitness status within each health-related physical fitness component; interpret the results of physical fitness assessments and use this information to develop individualized physical fitness goals with guidance from the teacher; and evaluate the effectiveness of exercise and other factors to obtain personal fitness goals. PE

8 Content Standard 5: Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings. Utilize safety principles in physical activity settings; work cooperatively and productively with a partner or small group; recognize the influence of peer pressure and identify ways of resolving conflict; work independently and on-task for short periods of time; and recognize classroom and activity rules. Select and utilize safety principles in physical activity settings; exhibit appropriate personal and group conduct appropriate while engaging in physical activity; recognize the influence of peer pressure and make appropriate decisions using problem solving techniques to resolve conflict; and work cooperatively with a group to achieve group goals.

9 Content Standard 6: Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings. Explore cultural/ethnic self-awareness through participation in physical activity; recognize the talents that individuals with differences can bring to group activities; experience differences and similarities among people of different backgrounds by participating in activities of national, cultural, and ethnic origins; and recognize how the media, particularly advertising, influences the perception of ideal body types. Identify the contribution that physical activity plays in multicultural/ethnic awareness and in the acceptance of all peers; acknowledge all people of different gender, culture, ethnicity, and disability and seek to learn more about both similarities and differences; and analyze how the media, particularly advertising, influences the perception of ideal body types. PE

10 Content Standard 7: Understands that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction. Identify physical activities that are enjoyable; practice physical activities to increase skills; demonstrate interaction with others while participating in physical activities; and use physical activity as a means of self-expression. Participate in physical activity; participate in new and challenging physical activities; identify the social benefits of participation in physical activity; and practice and demonstrate physical activity as a vehicle for self-expression.
