2 Hello Team Leaders: It s time for March into May (MIM), our 10 week physical activity challenge which will run from March 4, 2019 to May 12, 2019! This year we continue to focus on increasing and maintaining cardio (aerobic) exercise and musclestrengthening activities. Your role as Team Leader is important and we d like to share essential information to help you and your team be successful. What are the goals of the March into May Challenge? The 2018 edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion recommends that adults move more and sit less throughout the day to reduce the risk that sedentary behavior has on heart disease, high blood pressure, and all cause mortality. While we recommend people start slowly, we encourage you to set and reach a goal of at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise: cardio and muscle strengthening activities (on 2 or more days a week). This year, employees participating will track the minutes spent of both cardio exercise and musclestrengthening activities. In order to earn the final reward, a Team Member must perform and log a minimum number of 870 cardio exercise minutes plus the 225 minutes of muscle strengthening activities over the 10 week period. See page 3 for more information on the challenge. What is my role as a Team Leader? Your main responsibilities as an MIM Team Leader are to create a team and support your team members as they gradually increase their physical activity over the 10 weeks. This includes: Recruiting Team Members and answering any of their questions Motivating and reminding Team Members to complete and track activities Promoting Weekly Tips and MIM goals Distributing first and final rewards earned by Team Members Having fun! How do I start recruiting Team Members? Team recruitment starts on February 11, 2019 and we will mail you posters & flyers to help promote sign ups: Please write in your Team Name and your contact information on the flyers and posters, then display them in prominent places like a break room, an elevator, and restroom doors. You will also receive an electronic flyer to to coworkers at your worksite in order to recruit Team Members via . Please refer to page 4 for the team leader timeline. 3 MIM 2019 GOALS! Do you know how much and what type of physical activity the average adult should get? Physical Activity Guidelines for Adults recommend 150 minutes of moderate intensity weekly cardio (aerobic) exercise a week AND muscle strengthening activity at least 2 days a week. Any cardio exercise which also include muscle strengthening exercise can be counted towards the goals for muscle strengthening activity minutes. Please refer to page 5 for examples of cardio exercise and muscle strengthening activities. The Employee Wellness Division is encouraging County employees to reach these guidelines over the 10 week challenge. Those who meet and log their minutes successfully will earn the final reward: Basic Challenge Cardio Exercise Muscle Strengthening Activity Week minutes 15 minutes Weeks minutes per week minutes per week Weeks minutes per week minutes per week Minimum total to earn final reward 870 minutes 225 minutes If Team Members already have a regular exercise routine that surpasses the basic challenge, invite them to aim for the bonus challenge (below) which qualifies them to win one of our grand prizes. Or they can create their own program goals which exceed our baseline challenge to earn the final reward. Bonus Challenge: Log a minimum of 150 minutes of cardio exercise AND 60 minutes of muscle strengthening activity per week for the entire 10 week challenge. Employees who meet and log their bonus challenge successfully will earn a chance to win a Grand Prize: Bonus Challenge Cardio Exercise Muscle Strengthening Activity Week minutes per week 60 minutes per week Minimum total to earn chance at a Grand Prize 1500 minutes 600 minutes 3 P age

4 Team Leader Timeline The following information details the role and responsibilities of Team Leaders and deadlines. Please read and keep this list handy as a reference guide. Dates February 11 March 1 Tasks & Responsibilities Promote March Into May to Recruit Team Members Receive and display MIM posters and flyers from EWD Place posters and flyers in prominent places in your work area. E mail the Team Member Packet to potential Team Members. Help Employees to Register (open from February 11 March 1) Send interested employees the registration link: Let Team Members know to select Team Name with leader name from the Team Name drop down list in order to join your team. Monitor your team tab on your online Team Leader dashboard frequently to make sure everyone is registered before the deadline (March 1). March 4 May 12 May Encourage Movement & Participation Remind Team Members to begin tracking on the Online Activity Tracker starting on March 4. Only activities accumulated during the program dates March 4 May 12 count towards earning the final reward. Encourage your Team Members to complete the online pre survey by March 14. Distribute the 1 st incentive to all registered Team Members once received by the Employee Wellness Division between March Remind your Team Members to keep moving and tracking! Refer to ideas on pg 5. Complete Final Procedures Remind Team Members that all cardio and muscle strengthening activities need to be entered by May 17. Encourage your Team Members to complete the online post survey by May 17 to give us insight and ideas for next year. Distribute participant final incentives to all eligible employees on your team. Grand Prize winners will be announced by May 31, 2019 via . 4 P age

5 Ideas to Successfully Complete the Challenge Great Ideas to Motivate Team Members Work with your department s Wellness Champion to coordinate your efforts. Kick off the beginning of the program with an event or activity such as a group walk, warm up, stretch, Instant Recess videos or team cheer. Identify a walk route around your workplace. Predetermined map routes are available on the EWD web site under Get Fit : Suggest some friendly competition between teams or individuals. For example, which team has the highest percentage of their work group participating or who has the highest average number of minutes each week? Put a poster board up in a central location and have team members write out all of the reasons physical activity is good for you. Engage your supervisors and managers to join or lead a walk! Lead an exercise stretch break. Instant Recess videos or fitness DVDs are available from Employee Wellness. Reward members for participating in group activities with fun items like stickers or beads that they can collect throughout the program. Participate in local 5k/10k walks or runs such as the March for Babies Walk on April 27. Create a graph for your bulletin board that demonstrates your team s progress. Set Outlook reminders for your Team Members to get up and move. Schedule a few minutes at a staff meeting to do a Wellness stretch break. Encourage walking meetings. What are some examples of cardio? Walking/Jogging/Running/Hiking Swimming/Water Aerobics Dancing Jumping rope Martial Arts or Boxing Rowing HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) Heavy yard work Playing sports such as basketball, tennis, soccer, etc. And more! What are some examples of muscle strengthening activities? Weight lifting Using resistance bands Crossfit Hiking Barre Rowing HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) Body weight exercises (ex. squats, push ups, sit ups, lunges, planks, leg lifts, chair dips, etc.) And more! 5 P age

6 March Into May Rewards First Participation Reward: Reflector Key Light with Carabiner Be safe while you are taking an evening walk or jog with this extra bright white LED light. It attaches to your backpack, belt loop, etc. *Team Leaders will also receive a large office stretch poster (18 x 24 inches) to display at your worksite. Final Participation Reward: Sports Pack with Front Zipper Take this sports pack along with you when you hit the gym or go for a short hike! It s made of 210D Polyester with a large front zippered pocket, built in slot for earbuds and reinforced eyelets. Requirements: participants must log a grand total of at least 870 minutes of cardio exercise and 225 minutes of muscle strengthening activity at the end of the 10 week challenge. Rewards above may vary in color and design. Challenge* A chance to win a Grand Prize: Images coming soon! *Requirements: MIM participants must log a grand total of at least 1500 minutes of cardio exercise and 600 minutes of muscle strengthening activity at the end of the 10 week challenge. Those who meet this goal will be entered for a chance to win a Grand Prize (prizes will be displayed on EWD website at the end of February). 6 P age

7 Frequently Asked Questions 1. What is the minimum number of Team Members I need to recruit to form an official MIM team? At least 3 Team Members. 2. What is the maximum number of Team Members on a team? There is no maximum number of Team Members on a team. However, if the team are > 20 members, we have two suggestions to make it more manageable: a. Leading the team with another coworker, or b. Splitting the group into 2 or more teams within the same department 3. Can I co lead a team with another employee? Yes. We recommend co leaders for larger teams (i.e. 20+ members) 4. What are my main responsibilities as a Team Leader? As a Team Leader, your main responsibilities include the following: Recruiting Team Members and answering any of their questions Motivating and reminding Team Members to complete and track activities Monitoring team members activity trackers on a regular basis Distributing first and final incentives to team members 5. What are some ideas to build team morale or encourage my team to reach the program goals? Please refer to the page 5, Great Ideas to Motivate Team Members, for some suggestions. 6. How often do I monitor my team members progress? We encourage Team Leaders who have access to the online Team Leader Dashboard to view their team members progress on a weekly or bi weekly basis. 7. What is the minimum requirement to earn the final reward? Participants must log a grand total of at least 870 minutes of cardio exercise and 225 minutes of musclestrengthening activity at the end of the 10 week program to receive the final reward. Please note that any cardio exercise which also include muscle strengthening exercise can be counted towards the goals for muscle strengthening activity minutes. 8. How will I know which team members earned the final reward? A report will be run after the May 17, 2019 deadline. The Employee Wellness Division will provide each team leader with a list of eligible team members along with the final rewards. 7 P age
