Winter Champion Training 2018 Campaign Carrie Beshears Irene Umipig
Champion Call-Outs: THANK YOU for all you did in 2017! Award Celebration 2017 Awards Champion recruitment (opt-out)
Why Well-Being? At the City and County of San Francisco, we want our employees to Live, Feel & Be Better Every Day. When we focus on well-being Today we feel immediate benefits from becoming more aware of our well-being and empowered to take action toward a well-being goal Tomorrow health benefits accumulate so that healthy habits are established as we strengthen our well-being In the future quality of life is improved with lower blood pressure and health behaviors become habits which help us prevent and manage health conditions.
Understanding Risk Factors To help you live, feel and be better every day we are promoting awareness of the risk factors that can be managed by an individual
Campaign Goal Help participants to Live, Feel & Be Better Every Day Three steps to help them start in 2018: 1. Know Your Numbers (find out your health measures) 2. Take the Pledge (and learn about resources) 3. Select a Program (to help you succeed)
Timeline Know Your Numbers Events and Education January-February Take the Pledge Awareness Campaign February-March *More details during January Champion Webinar (TBD) Choose a Program Well-Being Sponsored Programs January and Beyond
Raise Awareness: Educate about the why and the how
Know Your Numbers Which health measure needs to be monitored to prevent diabetes? Blood glucose
Know Your Numbers Why is high blood pressure also called the silent killer? It has no symptoms
Know Your Numbers Limiting fried food in your diet can help control this health measure: Cholesterol
Know Your Numbers Height and weight are used together to calculate this health measure: Body Mass Index (BMI)
Why Know Your Numbers? Being aware of your numbers is a vital part of staying healthy and maintaining goals. Scales, BMI machines and blood pressure machines help raise awareness, maintain awareness, and track progress.
Step 1: Know Your Numbers There are different ways to learn what your numbers are: Biometric Screenings Blood Pressure Machines BMI Machines Visit Your Physician Champion Role: Encourage participants to attend an upcoming event or visit a physician or health measure machine
BMI/BP Machine Locations 311* BP: 1 South Van Ness, 2 nd Floor DEM* BMI, BP: 1011 Turk St FIR Division of Training* BMI: 2300 Folsom Street HSS Wellness Center BP,BMI: 1145 Market St, Suite 100 Laguna Honda Hospital BMI: 375 Laguna Honda Boulevard PORT* BMI: Pier 50- Shed D Police Academy* BMI: th Street SFMTA BMI: MME Division th St BMI: 1 South Van Ness, 6 th Floor Wellness Room SFPW BMI: 2323 Cesar Chavez, Training Room *Closed location, inaccessible to non department employees
Raise Awareness: Promote Tracking Toolkit Blood Pressure, BMI, Scales Toolkit Help employees to keep track of your numbers for blood pressure and BMI. Simple machines like the these can provide ease of access for employees to monitor their health risks regularly.
Nancy George, DPW Screening and Launch Party Public Works Street and Environmental Services launched a campaign with fruit, their BMI machine, and a short stretch break led by HSS!
Live, Feel & Be Better Every Day Create a Culture Tool BMI/BP Pocket Guide with a Tracker *Most useful at locations with a machine onsite Or if you are hosting a screening Mark your Champion Action Plan!

Live, Feel & Be Better Every Day Campaign Promotional Tools Event Specific Posters Poster Desk Drop Postcard Mark your Champion Action Plan!
ACTIVITY: How will you promote Knowing Your Numbers at your workplace? Using Both TOOLKITS Consider: 1. What s worked best in promoting an event/activity at your department? 2. Can you partner with another Champion/Department? 3. Will you have an activity? 4. Do you need incentives? 5. How will you encourage participation in Live, Feel, Be Better Every Day campaign?

Adopt healthy habits Each track will highlight resources to help participants meet their goal. Champion Role: Encourage participants to complete the pledge survey to sign up for the campaign.
Lose Weight If you are overweight, losing 5-10% of your weight can have big health impacts, including preventing chronic diseases. A quick way to understand whether or not you are within a healthy weight range, is to monitor your BMI.
Lower Blood Pressure 1 in 6 Americans don t know they have high blood pressure because there are no obvious signs or symptoms A quick way to understand whether or not you are within a healthy blood pressure range is to monitor your blood pressure routinely.
Adopt Healthy Habits Finding which habits work for you and maintaining them throughout the year is a goal that can help people to stay focused and consistent. Practicing healthy habits consistently can help you to manage your risk factors.
ACTIVITY: Discuss some well-being tools you want to introduce in your workplace to promote one of the following goals: 1. Lose Weight 2. Lower Blood Pressure 3. Adopt Healthy Habits Think of your ideas in two categories: What would you want to do if money was not an obstacle? What can you do with the resources you have available? Example: I d like to create food pantry with healthy options readily available for employees. But it also works to order fruit guys from HSS well-being a few times each year.
