1 AQA GCSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSE OUTLINE All students will follow the FULL course award worth one GCSE (Module 4892) This is made up of TWO units: UNIT 3 KNOWLEDGE & UNDERSTANDING FOR THE ACTIVE PARTICIPANT The theory part of the course Assessed with a 1hr30min written paper (will include multiple choice questions, structured questions and extended questions relating to a pre released scenario sent to school before the final exam) Worth 80 marks (40% of your final grade) UNIT 4 THE ACTIVE PARTICIPANT The practical part of the course Worth 90 marks (60% of your final grade) Assessed in 4 activities (from at least 2 groups/ways of thinking) At least 2 of these must be as a player/performer + =

2 SO HOW DO MY THEORY LESSONS WORK??? THEORY CONTENT You will have 2 lessons of theory every 10 days. Although you will be based in a classroom the theory will be taught through a combination of practical and classroom based lessons using a series of workbooks. You will look at the following topics: The Role Of The Active Participant Player/performer Organiser Leader/coach Official Individual Differences Age Disability Gender Culture Physique Environment Risk & Challenge Activity Levels Training The Demands Of Performance Fatigue & Stress Personality/emotions Tension/anxiety Aggression Motivation/arousal Boredom/tedium Feedback/criticism Injury The difference between aerobic & anaerobic exercise Characteristics & benefits of leisure & tourism Heath, Fitness And A Healthy Active Lifestyle Fitness as one aspect of general health Differences between health & fitness Adoption of a healthy active lifestyle Concept of fitness Components of fitness

PRACTICAL CONTENT You will have 3 lessons of practical every 10 days. What activities we do in these sessions will be decided following the induction lesson (when we know what your strengths are!) In the practical you can be assessed in any of the 4 roles of the active participant. Most people will find however that they are always assessed as the first one: - *Player/performer* - Organiser - Leader/coach
