3 What I had I gave today. What I saved was lost forever! -David Abraham OUR PHILOSOPHY Wrestling is a sport that builds character. Our sport has a culture that is unique to us. Our team will not find success without commitment, dedication, and hard work. Canby is rich with wrestling tradition and it is our job to maintain the integrity of that tradition. We know that every individual will achieve at different levels, but our goal is that every individual on our team gains something valuable from this sport. We will demand the same commitment from everyone on our team. Every individual with his own uniqueness has the opportunity to take part in our sport. We are different, but it is our differences that make us great. Wrestlers are pushed harder, farther, and longer than any other sport. We transform boys into men not only physically, but also in terms of understanding the value of commitment, accountability, and responsibility. TEAM CAPTAINS Appointment Team captains shall be chosen by members of the wrestling team, and approved by the coaching staff. Careful consideration should be taken when picking team captains. Only those who exhibit strong leadership skills will be approved by the coaching staff. Team captains can be removed by the coaching staff if it is determined their actions do not best represent the team. Team Captain Responsibilities A team captain s responsibility is to monitor and maintain the entire teams credibility. Team captains must help the coaches monitor wrestlers during practice, meets, in school and after school activities. Team captains are responsible for leading the team during pre-match warm-ups, and representing the team during a coin toss. Other duties of the team captains are to organize daily cleaning of the mat. Lead by Example Leading by example means taking part, not just delegating. Demonstrate what it takes to excel in athletics and academics. Be on time! Work hard! Be a good sport! All members of the Canby wrestling team are representatives of our school and our sport. Do what you are supposed to be doing when you are supposed to be doing it. As a student athlete you should put high priorities on both class work and practice. Make sure you and your teammates are taking care of both. PRACTICE Practice begins at 3:10. That means you should be dressed down, shoes on, in the room, and ready to go. If there is a reason that you must miss practice (i.e. illness or family emergency) contact Coach Ensrud directly. Do not rely on a teammate to relay this information for you. Failure to contact coach will result in an unexcused absence. Three unexcused absences may result in dismissal from the team. All wrestlers are required to attend and be on time to all practices, team meetings, and events whether they are able to participate or not (i.e. skin conditions, sprains, etc). Lack of attending practices or meets for such conditions will result in an unexcused absence. Leaving events prior to being excused by coach Ensrud will also result in an unexcused absence. Our greatest glory is not in avoiding failure, but in rising every time we fall. - Confucius
4 ATTENDANCE Coaches must be notified of an absence in advance for it to be considered excused. The only exception is when an emergency occurs. An excused absence must be prearranged in person or by phone call to the head coach. There is no excuse for missing training. If an athlete must miss practice they must take the initiative to make up the training. Excused absences must be made up the same as unexcused absences. Failure to make up an excused absence will result in an unexcused absence. An athlete s inability to practice even if excused may affect his eligibility to compete that week. An athlete s eligibility to compete within the week will be up to the discretion of the head coach. An unexcused absence is any absence from practice, competition, or event that has not been approved by coach Ensrud (events include helping clean up after matches and tournaments). It will be up to the discretion of coach Ensrud to determine the validity of your absence. Failure to verbally contact your coaches in person, or by phone will result in an unexcused absence. An athlete will be ineligible for competition until all missed practices are made up. First unexcused: Second Unexcused: Third unexcused: Make up missed time with coach at the earliest opportunity. Same as above plus a 1-week suspension from all competition. Turn in gear. In order to accomplish the goals set by the team and the coaches we need a system to hold our athletes accountable. We also need parents to support our role in helping the members of this team learn accountability and responsibility. If athletes miss practices, competitions, or events for any reason, they are expected to make up that time. TEAM EXPECTATIONS Respect your team, your room, and your equipment In order to accomplish our goals (both individual and team) we need to rely on each other to make us the best we can be. We are not competing against each other; we are competing against other teams. Help build up your teammates with positive remarks and constructive criticism. Competition All team members are expected to sit with the team and support their teammates during competition. All athletes are required to wear team-issued gear while at team events. The only visible logo on your gear should be Canby Wrestling. Team Travel Athletes are expected to follow all rules and guidelines at all times. All athletes are expected ride to and from competitions together. Only the head coach can excuse an athlete from riding with the team. Athletes will be excused from riding with the team only with a valid reason and a letter from a parent. Athletes should follow the directions of all coaches. If team rules are broken while on a road trip arrangements will be made to send the athlete home immediately. Challenge Matches The coaches will select a date for the initial challenge matches at the beginning of the season. Athletes will have additional challenge match opportunities at predetermined points of the season, and prior to the state-qualifying tournament. The coach shall determine the official challenge match dates. Additional challenge matches may be held as athletes change weight classes while following the OPC weight loss plan.. Athletes are expected to be within 5 pounds of the weight that they are challenging for. The challenge for a varsity position will be determined by the first wrestler to win two matches (out of three). A wrestler challenging a varsity wrestler must win two consecutive challenge matches to become the varsity wrestler. The purpose of challenge matches is to determine the varsity order, however all positions will be determined by the head coach.
5 You are a representative of the team, school, and community As a participant in an extra-curricular program, a student s behavior on campus, in the community, and at other schools reflects not only on the student, but on the program and school as well. Criminal acts, violence, intimidation or discrimination, whether at school or in the community, will not be tolerated and may be cause for disciplinary action up to and including suspension/dismissal from the program. ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES Eligibility Prior to participating in practice all athletes must complete an athletic clearance form. This form must be signed by the athletic secretary before you are eligible for practice or competition. All athletes must also have a current physical checkup by a qualified physician. Athletes must maintain a certain academic standard in order to remain eligible for competition. Student-athletes are required to pass 4 classes each term to maintain eligibility. Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drugs The Canby wrestling team has a no tolerance policy when it comes to tobacco, alcohol or drugs. Athletes are prohibited from possessing or using tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs on and off campus at any time. In addition, students who find themselves in the presence of other students who are in violation of this policy are expected to immediately leave the premises where such illegal activity is occurring, even if the students him/herself is not using or possessing or distributing alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs or paraphernalia. The first offense of this rule will result in a 5-week suspension from competition. A second offense will result in the athlete being prohibited from participating in any athletics for one calendar year. Lettering Lettering is based on three criteria. A wrestler can letter if they score 35 team points at the varsity level, or 50 team points at the junior varsity level. Wrestlers are awarded the same point value they receive during a dual-meet (pin=6, tech=5, major=4, win=3. Each varsity match wrestled is worth a minimum of 2 points (win or lose). A wrestler may also letter by placing at the district tournament. Ultimately, the final decision is up to coach s discretion. There may be extenuating circumstances that would qualify an individual for a letter (i.e. A fourth year senior SAFETY PROCEDURES Injuries and Infections In wrestling, as with all sports, injury is an inherent risk. Athletes should be aware of this risk and refrain from any situations in which they do not feel safe. Skin infections are a common problem in the sport of wrestling. We must all do our part to keep skin infections to a minimum. Athletes should report any signs of possible infection to the coaching staff immediately. After the beginning of practice or competition athletes are not allowed to leave without permission from the coaching staff. Athletes are not trainers. Do not self-diagnose injuries or infections. If you believe you are injured, sick, or have a skin infection check in with the coaches and we will send you to the trainer. Unless you have a communicable disease you are expected to be at every practice. PARENTAL SUPPORT Be Supportive Realize that your child is part of a team. Please don t expect your child to sit with you at competitions. We want our team to sit together and be supportive of each other. We want our crowds to be supportive at competitions. Feel free to encourage the athletes, but remember we do have a competent coaching staff that will take care of coaching the athletes. Please remain positive with the athletes at all times. This sport provides enough adversity for these guys to deal with. Understand that wrestling is a very demanding sport, and that some school is missed during the season. Please help us encourage your athlete to stay on top of academics.
6 IMPORTANCE OF EATING RIGHT REHYDRATE Rehydrating correctly is important to achieve the best performance, and to eliminate muscle fatigue and cramping.if you overload on Gatorade your body will shut down. Your body cannot absorb it quick enough and it will just be eliminated as waste. Too much Gatorade too fast will give you stomach aches and will not deal with the cramping problem. Water down your Gatorade and drink 1 cup every 5 minutes. REFUEL Proper refueling can give you a slight advantage, but if done improperly (i.e. eating too much) will actually decrease performance. Eat simple carbs, but not too many. Simple carbs (only) can be digested and removed from the stomach in as short as 1 hour. (Ex. Bread, Noodles, Fruit, Rice, Cereal). If you add proteins and/or fats to your meal, it will take up to 4 hours to remove the food from your stomach (Ex. Meat, Cheese, Mayonnaise, Candybars, Crackers). If you eat too much your body will divert blood from your arms and legs to aid in digestion. This will cause you to fatigue during a match. Warming Up, More Important Than You Thought By Dr. E. Quinn Benefits of a Proper Warm Up: Increased Muscle Temperature - The temperature increases within muscles that are used during a warm up routine. A warmed muscle both contracts more forcefully and relaxes more quickly. In this way both speed and strength can be enhanced. Also, the probability of overstretching a muscle and causing injury is far less. Increased Body Temperature - This improves muscle elasticity, also reducing the risk of strains and pulls. Blood Vessels Dilate - This reduces the resistance to blood flow and lower stress on the heart. Increased Blood Temperature - The temperature of blood increases as it travels through the muscles, and as blood temperature rises, the amount of oxygen it can hold becomes reduced. This means a slightly greater volume of oxygen is made available to the working muscles, enhancing endurance and performance. Improved Range of Motion - The range of motion around a joint is increased. Hormonal Changes - Your body increases its production of various hormones responsible for regulating energy production. During warm up this balance of hormones makes more carbohydrates and fatty acids available for energy production. Mental Preparation - The warm up is also a good time to mentally prepare for an event by clearing the mind, increasing focus, reviewing skills and strategy. Positive imagery can also relax the athlete and build concentration.
