1 BECOMING A PERSONAL TRAINER PPE 200 (3 credits) Tues/Thurs 8:00-9:20am SLOC 104 Fall 2010 Amy Bidwell, PhD. Candidate Women s Building Room 306 (Human Performance Lab) Office hours: Thurs 12-2pm or by appointment ajsauve@syr.edu REQUIRED TEXT: ACSM s Resources for the Personal Trainer, 3rd edition (2009) ACSM s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, 8th edition Recommended Text: NASM Essentials of Personal Fitness Training, Third Edition Course Description: The field of personal training has expanded in recent years to include many dimensions of fitness as well as the components of wellness. It is crucial for the personal trainer to have a solid knowledge base in anatomy, exercise physiology, nutrition, and biomechanics. In addition, working knowledge of exercise techniques, program design, and personal wellness is required, as well as the ability to communicate and motivate effectively. Becoming a Personal Trainer is a course which will provide students with real-life skills applicable to every occupation. The technical knowledge provided throughout the course insures students desiring a career in personal training have the exercise science and nutrition knowledge to safely provide their clients with effective, individualized programs. The life skills addressed in this course will contribute to the personal and professional success of each student. These life skills include: organization, planning, goal setting, motivation, teaching, coaching, communicating, marketing, and business management. Course Objectives: The student should be able to: 1. Explain the following exercise science components: a. Structure and function of muscular, nervous and skeletal systems b. Structure and function of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems c. Bioenergetics d. Biomechanics e. Resistance and aerobic exercise training adaptations 2. Demonstrate proper: a. 2 3. Demonstrate nationally accepted methods of evaluation and consultation: a. Health risk appraisal b. Fitness testing and assessment c. Protocols and norms 4. Apply personal training skills for proper: a. Exercise techniques b. Program design c. Identifying and addressing the needs of special populations 5. Discuss and apply communication skills: a. Listening skills b. Assertion c. 3 Grading Scale: Total Points % of Point Total Letter Grade A A B B B C C C D <375 <60.0 F Assignments/Quizzes: Interview: Student will contact a personal trainer, conduct an interview, and observe a personal training session. Students will be required to have the personal trainer and the client sign a form agreeing to having you observe them. (10 pts) Quizzes: There will be three quizzes throughout the semester (10 pts each for a total of 30 pts) Debate groups: students will be divided into groups an given a topic to research and debate. You will be graded on your active participation during the debates. (10 pts) Participation: Students will be graded on their active, daily participation in class. Everyone will start with 0 out of 25 points and will need to earn the points throughout the semester. Exam 1 and 2: Exams will consist of multiple choice, fill in the blanks and short answers. They will NOT be cumulative. Student Exercise Demonstration Practicum: Students will demonstrate and describe exercise equipment, free weight, and body weight exercises: You will instruct the client how to perform the exercise. ie: how to position their body, how to breathe, what full ROM is for this exercise. You will also tell the client if this exercise can be done any other ways. Ie: bicep curls can be done with a machine, dumbbells, bar and can be done seated or standing. You should include any contraindications for this exercise. ie: push-ups would not be good for a pregnant woman. PPE 200 Fall 2010 Syllabus Page 3

4 You will receive more points if you include/are the following: Talk and carry yourself in a professional manner Dress in a professional manner- like a personal trainer should be dressed If you pay attention while others are presenting their exercise Fitness Assessments: conduct a fitness assessment on a classmate/friend. More details will be provided in class. Final Project: Create a ten-week program for a specific case study which will be assigned to you. You can type the program up however you would like as long as the following is included for EACH week of the ten week program: 1. # of Risk Factors 2. Goals 3. Cardiovascular Program (include type, frequency, intensity, duration) 4. Strength Training Program (include exercise name, sets, reps, rest period) 5. Flexibility Program (name of stretch, duration of stretch) 6. Nutritional Goals FINAL PROJECT DUE 12/15 by noon on Blackboard. Course Policies: 1. Blackboard and You must have an SYR address and will be held responsible for any messages sent to you at this address. We will be using SU Blackboard in this class and you will be held responsible to check Blackboard daily. 2. Attendance: You are to attend every class. You are to be an active participant in all aspects of the course. This includes attendance, discussions, and involvement in group/individual projects/presentations. Attendance is a portion of your participation grade. 3. Students are responsible for completing assignments on time and turning them in as scheduled. No late assignments will be accepted and a student must make arrangements prior to any exam/assignment that will be missed. If an exam/assignment is missed because of health reasons, a signed statement from the health care provider must be presented to demonstrate the absence was unavoidable. 4. Students who need special accommodation because of any kind of disability should make an appointment to discuss this with the instructor at the start of the semester. 5 5. Written Work: Type all assignments (word-processed) double-spaced, 12 pt font. Please proof-read your work. Assignment with unacceptable grammar will be given back and you will be required to redo the assignment for half credit. Academic integrity statement: The Syracuse University Academic Integrity Policy holds students accountable for the integrity of the work they submit. Students should be familiar with the Policy and know that it is their responsibility to learn about instructor and general academic expectations with regard to proper citation of sources in written work. The policy also governs the integrity of work submitted in exams and assignments as well as the veracity of signatures on attendance sheets and other verifications of participation in class activities. Serious sanctions can result from academic dishonesty of any sort.
