35 HOSPITAL INFO LIGHTNING POLICY The athletic training staff has full responsibility at all practice sites and during warm-ups prior to the start of competition for the determination of safety conditions for student-athletes including the responsibility for determining whether or not activity can continue. Once competition begins, the game officials assume responsibility in coordination with the athletic trainer on site, whose responsibility it is to monitor the lightning. Taking a team from any playing area is not the coach s prerogative unless the safety of the student-athletes is in jeopardy. Initial delay of activity due will be determined utilizing the Telvent Weather Sentry tool by Schneider Electric, Alberta, Canada. Lightning within an eight mile radius of the event warrants a 30 minute delay in the event. Each strike within the eight miles radius restarts the 30 minute waiting period. The athletic trainer is responsible to determine the all clear via Telvent for outside event to resume. In the event of failure to the Telvent System, flash-to-bang can be used. The eight mile radius will still be used; eight seconds from sight of lightning to the sound of thunder. During delay of activity, the National Weather Service recommends immediate refuge in shelter; a substantial enclosed building with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metaltopped vehicle with windows up. Use of whirlpools, showers, and land line telephones are prohibited during the delay. COLD WEATHER To prevent hypothermia and frost bite, duration of activity in extreme cold weather must limited.
