Cardiovascular Disease (Heart Disease, Stroke, and other Cardiovascular Disease)
Cardiovascular Disease: Definition Includes the heart (cardio) and blood vessels (vascular)
Atherosclerosis One of the most common forms of heart disease. Condition that develops when plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries.
Atherosclerosis Plaque is made from fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances in the blood: a hard, waxy fat-like substance.
--Blood has LESS room to travel in the artery. --Blood has hardly ANY room to travel in the artery.
Atherosclerosis Blood flows easily through a healthy artery. But when arteries are blocked, blood can t get through.
Atherosclerosis If arteries are blocked in the heart, a heart attack can occur. If arteries are blocked in the brain, a stroke can occur.

Atherosclerosis The liver makes all the cholesterol your body needs. Cholesterol is used to make: --hormones --cell membranes

Prevention: The American Heart Association gauges the cardiovascular health of the nation by tracking seven key health factors and behaviors that increase risks for heart disease and stroke. Goal: to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent and reduce deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent, by the year VanKim, Nicole. Heart Disease and Stroke in New Mexico: Facts and Figures: At-aglance. Albuquerque, NM: New Mexico Department of Health, Web.
Life s Simple 7 1. Smoking- Worldwide, tobacco smoking (including secondhand smoke) was one of the top three leading risk factors for disease and contributed to an estimated 6.2 million deaths in Physical Activity- About one in every three U.S. adults 31 percent reports participating in no leisure time physical activity.
Life s Simple 7 3. Healthy Diet- Eat a balanced diet eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. 4. Healthy Weight- One indicator is to have a healthy body mass index (BMI)
Life s Simple 7 5. Cholesterol- About 43 percent of Americans have total cholesterol higher of 200 mg/dl or higher. 6. High Blood Pressure- Keep it under control. 7. Blood Sugar/Diabetes-About 21 million Americans have diagnosed diabetes. That s almost 9 percent of the adult population, but diabetes rates are growing. In fact, about 35 percent of Americans have pre-diabetes.
Symptoms of a Heart Attack: Chest discomfort: Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. This can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
Continued Shortness of breath. This often comes along with chest discomfort. But it also can occur before chest discomfort. Other symptoms. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat or experiencing nausea or light headedness.
What to do if someone is having a heart attack Call 911 immediately Death or permanent damage can be reduced with timely treatment. Some newer treatments need to be given soon after the onset of a heart attack in order to be effective. Act quickly
