2 Impact Outcomes-Based Learning MASTERCLASS MEDTRONIC MITRAL ACADEMY Dear friends and colleagues, We are delighted to welcome you in Brussels at UCL St. Luc for the 14 th International Advanced Mitral & Tricuspid Valve Repair Symposium. Repair of the mitral valve represents the treatment of choice of mitral regurgitation and is associated with excellent long-term survival and low incidence of valve-related complications. In order to achieve durable results, it is important that surgeons understand and apply the basic concepts that are specific to the reconstruction of the mitral valve. As in previous years, we will focus on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of the mitral and the tricuspid valves, with particular emphasis on echocardiographic assessment, surgical repair techniques and clinical outcomes. We strongly recommend that attendees actively participate. We have prepared an attractive and diversified scientific programme that offers a full spectrum of learning opportunities, from continuing medical education to presentations on the most recent surgical advances in valve repair. The programme will also offer several live surgery demonstrations that will illustrate the various surgical procedures and a wetlab that includes an anatomical session. Together with the team, we are happy to share our experience and concepts that have been designed in a didactic way to allow participants to reproduce the content. El-Khoury Prof. J. L. Vanoverschelde INVITED FACULTY TARGET AUDIENCE The course is specifically designed for experienced cardiac surgeons who want to improve their practice in mitral valve repair. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS The course will be limited to 50 participants. Wetlab is a separate registration and limited to 30 participants. FORMAT This two-day programme starts at on day 1 and finishes at on day 2. 4 FACULTY BIOGRAPHIES CHAIRMEN DR. PHILIPPE BALLAUX Dr. Ballaux graduated from medical school at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium in He spent four years in general surgery residency and completed a Master of Sciences in Surgical Sciences at Imperial College in London, UK in He specialised for three years in cardiac surgery at the KU Leuven and completed a two-year fellowship at the Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein, Netherlands. Since 2006, he has been a cardiac surgery staff member at AZ Maria Middelares in Ghent, Belgium. Throughout his cardiac surgery career, he has always cherished a special interest in surgery for atrial fibrillation. PROF. GEBRINE EL-KHOURY Prof. El-Khoury arrived in Belgium from Lebanon when he was 18 and completed medical school at Université Catholique de Louvain from (maxima cum laude). In September 1996, he joined the UCL St. Luc, as Associated Professor in the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Université Catholique de Louvain. Since 2004, he has been the head of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department. He is recognised as a pioneer in aortic valve repair. Prof. El-Khoury and his team run what has become a key centre in the treatment of valve disease. The centre is considered a true authority on cardiac surgery, as illustrated by its many daily visitors, its active involvement in high-level international conferences (live surgery, lectures, postgraduate courses, etc.) and the organisation of three international meetings each year. PROF. ROBERT KLAUTZ Prof. Klautz completed his medical training at the University of Leiden Medical School. After medical school, he spent two years as a research fellow at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of UC San Francisco from , and then he did his PhD in Leiden on Cardiac Mechanics, specifically in single ventricle hearts. His surgical training was at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam. In 2002, he returned to Leiden as a staff surgeon at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, where he became chair of the department in His main clinical and research interests are in mitral and aortic valve reconstruction, alternative surgical strategies in heart failure treatment, and ischemia-reperfusion injury. He is a council member of EACTS, and an active member in the Acquired Cardiac Disease Domain Committee, STS, AATS and of several national organisations. PROF. YVES D UDEKEM Prof. d Udekem moved to Australia to work as a consultant at the Royal Children s Hospital in 2003 and acquired Professorship at the University of Melbourne in He currently has two research focuses: the outcomes late after Fontan surgery and after aortic arch repair. Prof. d Udekem has founded the Australian and New Zealand Fontan Registry, the largest of its kind in the world. He has published 226 articles in international peer-reviewed journals. In the last five years, he has published 153 articles, obtained seven NHMRC grants (three as CIA, three as CI and one as AI) and eight grants from other sources. PROF. JEAN-LOUIS VANOVERSCHELDE Prof. Vanoverschelde graduated as a physician in 1983 from Université Catholique de Louvain with highest distinction. He went on to specialise in internal medicine and became a cardiologist in From , he attended Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA. Afterwards, in Belgium, he defended his thesis on myocardiac hibernation. Since 1997, he has assumed responsibilities as the Head of the Cardiology Department at UCL St. Luc. In 2014, he was appointed as Head of the Cardiovascular Department, which is composed of cardiac services, cardiac surgery and cardiovascular intensive care. At the beginning of 2016, he resigned both functions to become the Director for the UCL St. Luc. Prof. Vanoverschelde is author or co-author of more than 260 publications. His work has been referenced over 11,000 times. His main focus area is the application of cardiovascular imaging techniques to diagnose cardiac and valvular diseases. Prof. Vanoverschelde is member of several national and international societies and was president of the Belgian Society of Cardiology from
