The Midwest Invasive Plant Network s Control Information Database: A Resource for Natural Resources Managers & Landowners Kate Howe MIPN, Purdue University
Mark Renz Brendon Panke Kari Maxwell
Choosing the best control method depends on: Species of invasive plant Habitat type Density of infestation Time of year Site restrictions Cost
It s important to select your control methods carefully. Inappropriate methods or poorly timed control efforts waste time and money. But, most people working on invasive plant control don t have access to scientific literature and need a quick and easy tool for decision-making.
HOW DID WE CREATE THE DATABASE? Searched the scientific literature for control methods Information reviewed by four independent reviewers -2 specialists for target plant species -2 focused on grammar, spelling, and consistency Information entered into a searchable database
List of Reviewers Our Reviewers Diana Alfuth Jane Anklam Roger Becker David Beckman Kristin Bilar Jesse Bennett Kevin Bradley Carmen Chapin Bob Clancy Jerry Clark Brian K. Davidson Jerry Doll Stephen Enloe Chris Evans John Exo Bill Halfman Matt Hanson Bob Hartzler Kevin Hendrickson Chris Henze Brad Herrick Jennifer Hillmer Kate Howe Ellen Jacquart Guy Kyser Courtney LeClair Rodney Lym Susan Mahr Bob Masters Kari Maxwell Mark Mayer Patti Nagai Glenn Nice Vijai Pandian Wayne Pauly Ron Rathfon Jim Reinartz Laura Van Riper Scott Reuss Gene Schriefer Erik Ulaszek Suzanne Wade Jessica Wickland Brock Woods
CAVEATS The database does not determine if a control measure is suitable for your specific site. Make sure you obtain the appropriate permit or license before starting control work.
LIMITATIONS OF THIS DATABASE Methods that take multiple years to reach full effectiveness are rated as providing poor control. -Biological control -Revegetation and other cultural methods Combining multiple control methods may be most effective strategy.

SEARCH CRITERIA Effectiveness The star rating represents a percentage of the original population that is eliminated (i.e., percent control). = <50% = 50 70% = 70 90% = >90% In season represents the percent control the year the method is carried out. Year after treatment represents the percent control the year after the method is carried out with no subsequent treatment. This includes resprouting and seedling emergence.

CASE STUDIES Practitioner experience with control methods is valuable information, not captured in published literature Case studies allow users to contribute their own experiences to the database

FUTURE PLANS Add additional species to the database. -Japanese barberry -Russian olive -autumn olive -Phragmites -reed canary grass -yellow toadflax Secure continued funding for web hosting and updates.
