Candidates for the Sunflower Board of Directors There are six openings for positions on the Board for fiscal year The deadline for applications was August 15, 2011, at 7 pm; the election will be held in November. Here are statements from the 7 candidates who have submitted applications: Carl Moulton Boston White Charles L Collins Eugene Wittman Frank L. Horsfall III Chris Naughton Tom Besterfeldt Carl Moulton My name is Carl Moulton and I am applying for the vacancy on our Board. Joanne and I have lived in Sunflower since 2002 and are year round residents. We have met many fine people and have made lasting friendships. I retired from Western Electric/A.T.T. as a manager after 30 years of service. In the past 9 years I have attended most of the Board meetings. I presently am serving on the ARC for over 2 years. On a lesser level; I assisted with BQ Area, Putting Green, Pancake Breakfast, Hamburger & Hot dog projects, just to show you that my interest in Sunflower is wide and varied. We now have a new Board President who is committed to not only bringing Sunflower back, but to move it forward and make it a better. She needs the support of all of us and she has mine. My personal opinion concerning the Community Improvement Fund is that it should be spent on major projects, that the Majority of the residents want. My strongest asset is common sense and my ability to listen to and get along with people. I am open to anyone who has a question for me or wants to share their opinion with me, whether I am elected to the Board or not. I will do my very best to serve the Sunflower Community, if I am elected. Thank you Carl Moulton Page 1 of 6
Boston White My name is Boston White, and I am a candidate for the Sunflower Community Association Board of Directors. My wife Sandi and I have been Sunflower residents since I have been a member of the Board of Directors of Sunflower since June I am seeking re-election to complete the unfinished business presently before the board, including the adoption of a conservative budget that provides for minimal if any dues increase. Of the new initiatives currently being put in place, the Community Improvement Committee, shows great promise as a means of bringing the community together, and making it more inclusive. I will also continue to work towards the only common sense solution to the pickle ball question, which is to share one of the under used tennis courts with the pickle ball players. The alternative is to build a special purpose facility at great expense that will ruin our landscape design and inflict a disruptive noise level on many other established activities. All these adverse consequences are avoidable if we accept the principle that change is inevitable, and that sharing of existing resources is all that is needed in order to resolve this issue. Thank you for allowing me to serve our community on the Board of Directors Boston White Charles L Collins My wife Jeanne and I have been involved here in Sunflower since We both worked for developer Del Webb. We moved into this great Sunflower community in I spent 38 active years in the fire service. I spent 27 years in the military. I progressed through the ranks in the fire service and the military to managerial positions. I have been involved in keeping up to date on events in Sunflower by attending Board meetings, study sessions, and town meetings on items proposed by the community. I have served on the Community Improvement, Finance and Architectural Review committees. As a Board member I will represent you based on your wishes, good management ideals and financial responsibility. Page 2 of 6
There are many projects that we wish to pursue. We have to balance our needs, wants and financial cost for each project. We need to study the impact of each project on our environment, on preserving the beauty of our community and on our neighbors who live close to the center. A YES vote for me will give you an extended voice that will represent you and your neighbors as a majority group in the operation of our superior Association, as a team. Eugene Wittman I have lived in Sunflower since May I served approximately three years as a member of both the Covenants and ARC Committees as well as Committee Chairman of both committees. After working within the Bell System for 35 years, I retired from AT&T as a manager. My volunteer work consisted of over 30 years with the BSA as Cub Master, Assistant Scout Master and Scout Master. The Pickleball controversy has again proven we have a communication problem between the BOD and the members. My hope is to improve communications on all levels. Sunflower needs to move forward to become competitive with new active adult communities. This needs to be accomplished without infringing upon the quality of life of other members. I feel that all Sunflower residents are equal. Care must be taken while controlling costs of repairs or adding inventory to the Sunflower Association. Experience has taught me that the cheapest way of doing business in the short term, can become the most expensive in the long term. The constant problems with the swimming pool need to be addressed and the monies spent to fix them. I will work to keep the appearance of Sunflower up to present standards or better. I will listen to suggestions for improvements to Sunflower Association and discuss them openly and honestly. I will always state why I will or will not support suggestions. Page 3 of 6
Frank L. Horsfall III I believe that the Board should be representative of the members of the community and should be responsive to the members concerns. Open Board meetings, ad hoc committees, and having specific Board Members responsible for specific areas of the community and available for discussions with those living in those areas are three (3) ways to improve representation and to be transparent about the process. I will make difficult decisions and be responsible for them and the issues involved. I am cognizant of the need for the Board to communicate clearly and effectively with those we serve. My previous experience with a staff of associates and advisors has given me insights that can benefit Sunflower and I look forward to having the opportunity to serve this community. There are several pressing issues for consideration and decisions before the Board now. Among them are: the resolution of where and of what form pickle ball courts will be constructed, and how their construction will be funded. The bylaws need to be rewritten to bring the authority of the Board more in line with a community organization rather than a developer controlled organ as it now is. I will work toward implementing and rectifying these and other issues. Although I am a Snowbird, I recognize the need for participation in Board activities throughout the year and am prepared to accomplish this through the use of available electronic media (telephone, and videoconferencing via Skype, for example). Background experience as a scientist, Scout leader, soldier, and teacher I hold a PhD in Environmental Engineering. Co-owned a small company in Switzerland for which I was the Director of Research. Prepared and evaluated bacterial products for the company to sell. Wrote numerous scientific papers on microbiology and waste water treatment. Developed and taught a graduate course in biotechnology to environmental engineers in Switzerland for eight (8) years. Scoutmaster for twenty five years, District Commissioner and Council Executive Board Member. Holder of the Silver Beaver Award Commander of an Armored Cavalry Squadron of 900 from Married to Susan for 45 years. Two (2) married children and eight (8) grandchildren. Page 4 of 6
Chris Naughton My name is Chris Naughton. In late December of 2001, my husband Dick and I began our retirement here in Sunflower. We rented until our home on W. Madrigal Drive was completed. Past Experience: the following list of my life experiences has helped me to develope and use effectively positive and constructive thinking which I believe will be an asset to the Board. - President of Board of Directors/ 2 years/ Woodfield community in Roswell, GA. - Membership Chair/1 year/ League of Women Voters/ Woodbury-Cottage Grove/ MN - President/ 2 years/ Woodbury-Cottage Grove/ League of Women Voters - Teacher/Upper Arlington H.S./3.5 yrs./columbus, OH (B.S. Secondary Educ./The Ohio State University/ English, Speech) - Teacher/2 middle schools/fulton County Georgia/Atlanta/6 years (Masters in Spec.Ed. Reading/Brenau University/Atlanta, GA) Sunflower community activities: the following list activities and responsibilities that have led me to bring a positive and constructive attitude and close-up knowledge of our community to the Board. - Past member of Activity Committee/Chair 2 years of New Year's Eve celebration - Past member of Quilters Club/ Co-chair of Community Quilts group 1 1/2 years - Current President of Crafters Group - Current Chair of annual Arts and Crafts Festival scheduled for November after the election to the Board - Participation in Sunflower activities (e.g., bridge groups, poker tournaments, Computer Club) In summary...past life and teaching experiences along with current activities have taught me to be a positive and active listener. I will bring these qualities to our Board of Directors. Page 5 of 6
Tom Besterfeldt Background: In 2006, after 27 plus years of active duty in the USAF and 10 plus years as a Department of Defense contractor, I decided to retire so that my wife and I could move to our home in Sunflower. We made that move in June Candidate Statement: I THANK the Sunflower Community for the strong support in the recent special summer election. Now, as the community rules require, I am seeking a full two year term on the BOD not to pursue any specific agenda but rather to effectively serve and represent all Sunflower homeowners. I m quite certain that in the next two years there will be some major initiatives/issues that we, the homeowners and BOD, must tackle and eventually resolve. While some of these issues may be challenging, we can succeed together by using a careful, measured approach that emphasizes a logical open process, effective communication, carefully researched facts, mutual respect, and civility. I will do my part to ensure that we in Sunflower get proposed major improvements or enhancements right the first time. Summary: There may be bumps in the road during this next BOD term. Sometimes we may have to agree to disagree, but I m confident that in spite of those bumps we will continue to be friends. I welcome your help and guidance as we will work together to make Sunflower an outstanding place to live. Page 6 of 6
