2 At a glance the contest: Is open to high school students in California Asks students to develop a 60-second video about suicide prevention or ending the silence about mental illness Enters each school into a drawing for a free suicide prevention and mental health program Recognizes students and schools at an award ceremony in Sacramento at the end of the school year where students will also have an opportunity to meet their local legislator.

7 Judge Outcomes Following participation in the Directing Change contest, 100% of judges responded they were aware of safe messaging guidelines for content related to suicide or suicide prevention. After judging contest videos, 95% of judges either strongly agreed or agreed that the judging process increased their knowledge of safe messaging for suicide prevention. When creating content related to suicide or suicide prevention in the future, 95% of judges are either very likely or likely to reference safe messaging guidelines.

12 Utilizing the films: Embed the films on your website. Show films as part of Suicide Prevention Week activities, or other mental health related gatherings (Mental Health Month-May) Promote the films via social media and encourage local youth to do the same. Partner with local high schools to show the videos. Show films at county task force meetings, and during presentations focused on youth, education, public health, mental health and suicide prevention. Look for local opportunities to run the videos in settings where a TV and DVD are available, such as clinic waiting rooms, Boys and Girls Clubs, and other social service agencies.

15 Ending the Silence of Mental Illness- Category Description Educate your peers that anyone can have a mental illness and/or that people who have a mental illness are more like me than different from me. Encourage Action - Show how peers can help end stigma by standing up for themselves or those with mental illness who are being harassed, bullied or in some way discriminated against. Have a Positive Message - Be careful not to dwell too much on the problem. The emphasis should be on how peers can help each other.

16 Suicide Prevention- Category Description The suicide prevention category has special content that should be included and specific content that must be avoided. The film needs to include a resource such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Films must not include portrayals of suicide deaths or attempts Communicate key messages such as: Suicide can be prevented. Most people show one or more warning signs, so it is important to know the signs and take them seriously. It is okay to break a friend s trust and share your concerns with an adult if you think your friend might be thinking about harming themselves.
