Great to see familiar faces and meet new ones. At the luncheon, the Grants Committee announced the theme for next year as chosen by vote of our members. And fortunately, so far, we should have approximately $75,000 plus to distribute in grants this spring. Our speaker, Michael Bedenbaugh, who is the executive director of Preservation South Carolina, was wonderful and truly spoke to our 2019 theme of "Preserving our Lowcountry Heritage and History." It will be exciting to hear how we can be of help in this important sector of our community. As the holiday season approaches and our calendars get filled, be sure to mark December 12 for our WIP Holiday Party at Helen Ryan's. We are hopeful that Lori Craven will be catering the event and there will be valet parking. More details are below. Please be sure to vote tomorrow. No long waits this time. 2 Our Fall luncheon was a big success, in terms of number of attendees, great networking, delicious food and great speaker. Because this occasion is when we learn about next year's grants, Grants Committee Elizabeth Loda explained our funding process. The Grants Committee offers three suggested themes to our membership, who then vote to select the theme. The requests for funding are selected based on how closely the application fits the topic. How do they determine how much money is available for grants? Each year 4.5% of the endowment fund and half of the member donations for that year provide the amount. The other half of member donations goes to the endowment fund to keep it growing. Helen Ryan, the Education Committee chair, introduced our speaker, Michael Bedenbaugh, who congratulated our group on our dedication to our communities. He said many times it is the feminine input that saves special places throughout the state. He then explained how Preservation South Carolina buys historic properties in extreme states of disrepair, then repairs and repurposes them within the community to reinvigorate the area. He showed pictures of examples of their work throughout the state, such as an aircraft hangar converted into a brewery. Preservation SC has been working on Daufuskie Island to renovate Gullah cottages there. To be sensitive to the area, they do not buy, but lease the properties from the family, renovate, and then rent out the cottages. Once the group has received enough income to cover its costs, the lease is dissolved, and the cottage reverts to the family. A special thanks to Diane Neal for taking some wonderful photos.
