2 Page 2 Lions Roar Lions News Briefs & Fast Facts Thank you to the Palatine Lions members and guests that represented the Club at two different events recently. Our Club had 9 people attend District 1-F s Pig Pen Derby. They were Phill & Daphne Matthews, Amy Peckham & Guest, Norb & Catherine Schmaus along with Leslie, Paul Pioch and our illustrious President Lion Marty Kelley. A second event that we have continued to add members that attend was the Mt Prospect Lions Corned Beef Dinner. The 13 attendees included first timers Ev Charlier and Tony Cinquegrani along with Norb & Catherine Schmaus, Patti & Clint Curtis, Ray and Sharon Maggi, Paul & Karen Pioch, Bruce & Mary Thill and once again our fearless leader, Lion President Marty Kelley. I believe everyone had a GREAT time at both events. The Board of Directors recently approved a $1,000 donation to the Lions of Illinois Foundation to support a new mobile Macular Degeneration screening unit, like the Hearing Bus, that is planned to travel throughout the State to perform these important screenings. They are currently being done now, but sometimes in a difficult way. Our Club is one of the first Lions Clubs in the State that has donated money (as opposed to pledging). We are providing a start toward this $100,000 unit. The plan is for one half of the funds to be raised and then have the remaining 50% be obtained from a grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation. The last report I received shows that 8 Clubs in our District have pledged $29,500 and another 6 Clubs have donated $4,000. About $6,000 has been donated from other Clubs in IL. It seems likely the bus will become a reality. 3 Volume 4, Issue 1 Page 3 Dear Lions, Lions have long been committed to programs that serve our youth. They are truly tomorrow's leaders. But they need us! I would like to encourage all Lions to support our youth as we focus on service to youth. Here are a couple of other programs that you may find of interest that our Lions Clubs International Foundation is working on currently. Providing Relief Following Disasters Lions and LCIF are committed to aiding communities affected by disasters, now and for years to come. LCIF is mobilizing US$120,000 for Pakistan flooding relief. A designated fund has been established for Lions wishing to support the relief efforts. Relief in Haiti also remains ongoing. Six hundred families are moving into new homes. This is the first of many reconstruction projects to receive support from LCIF thanks to the generosity of the international family of Lions. Lions-Measles Initiative Launched with Gates Foundation LCIF is working with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support efforts of the Measles Initiative for global elimination of measles, a leading cause of childhood blindness. Four African countries have been chosen for pilot Lions-Measles Initiative programs. LCIF and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are contributing a combined US$700,000 to the initiative. 4 Page 4 Lions Roar News from Lions Clubs International Lions Clubs International recently received the International Partnership Award from Community Anti-drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) for partnership work on two fronts: implementation of Lions Quest programs to help teach youth positive skills, such as avoidance of drugs and alcohol and assisting CADCA with community coalition development in Colombia. Thank You Notes to our Club (Taken from their letters.) From the Lions Project for Canine Companions for Independence (LPCCI) - In part their thank you read Thank you very much for your Member Club pledge. Lions Clubs have done so much for so many and this particular project is one that impacts the lives of the recipients for years to come. Palatine Township for the extra money we donated along with the Thanksgiving baskets - Without community support, this special Needy Family Fund would not be available to assist those less fortunate in our Township. Thank you for making a difference in your community. 5 Volume 4, Issue 1 Page 5 Many of you may remember when Lion Andy Toth, Past District Governor from the Vernon Hills Lions Club visited our Club and spoke about a project outside of Lions in which he was involved. Several members provided a donation. Below is his thank you letter to the Club along with one of the pictures of him with some of the kids. Thank you Lion Andy and thank you Lions for donating. 5/6

Announcing that the Eagle Scout candidate Jeff Pearson that made the new collection boxes for our Club will become an Eagle Scout next Sunday, December 19th at the 11:00 Mass at Holy Family. 6/6
