3 Tralee Community Development Project (CDP) ABOUT TRALEE CDP The roots of the project began in 1994, when a group of local people started a process which eventually led to the establishment of the Tralee Community Development Project here in Rock Street. In 1995 local volunteers sought funding, formed a limited company and identified suitable premises. They then set about devising a work plan for the project and in 1996 two staff were employed for the first time. During this time the premises were re -developed into a purpose built, community owned and managed Resource Centre. Our means of funding has changed over the years. We are now funded through our Local Development Company North East and West Kerry Development. This has enabled us to continue operating our community resource centre for the benefit of the community. We work with North East and West Kerry Development and Kerry Education and Training Board, amongst others, in a strategic collaborative way to deliver aspects of the Local Community Development Programme. What has not changed though is Tralee Community Development Project s mission statement: This is to promote co-operation between different groups in the community, to combine resources, regenerate the community and empower people to highlight and address their own needs. We also continue to welcome and encourage people to use the Centre by providing low cost resources and supports whenever possible Furthermore the Centre is still run by a Voluntary Board of Management. The Board of Management has grown and developed over the years as new members come on board and others move on. The volunteers give their time, energy and skills in an effort to improve the quality of life for everyone who uses the Centre and promote social inclusion. The majority of people on our Management Committee come from one of the many groups who have used or use the Project. Every management member has brought something unique from their own life experience that has contributed to the development of the project over the years and helped to maintain it as a vibrant community hub of activity The Management Committee of Tralee Community Development Project 3

4 The CDP Resource Centre: Tralee CDP provides affordable and accessible meeting space to a large number of different groups at the resource centre, for example: NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS (NA) The group meets four times per week Mon, Thu, Fri and Sat evenings at 8pm. NA offers recovery from the effects of addiction through working a twelve-step program, including regular attendance at group meetings. The group atmosphere provides help from peers and offers an ongoing support network for addicts who wish to pursue and maintain a drug-free lifestyle. 5 ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS (AA) PHOENIX GROUP The group meets daily Monday to Friday from 1.00pm to 2.00pm. Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. Contact: Kieran on

6 SHINE SUPPORT GROUP This group is for people affected by schizophrenia. The group meets twice a month on Fridays 6.30pm 9.30pm in the CDP. 7 LIFE RING SECULAR RECOVERY This group is an abstinence-based, worldwide network of people who are choosing to live in recovery from alcohol and other drugs. We encourage individuals to build their own personal recovery programs based on three principles: sobriety, secularity, and self-direction. We believe our personal recoveries require communication and connection with others in addition to our individual practice of abstinence. Meetings held on the first floor of the CDP on Wednesdays from 7.00pm 9.00pm. Contact :

8 Meala Bereavement Support MEALA BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT If you have experienced the death of a Loved One, Family Member, Friend or Neighbor, there is a group meeting to show that you are not alone on your bereavement journey This group meets the first and last Tuesday of every month at 7.00pm Contact the North East & West Kerry Development Office on: or ask at CDP office. 8

9 LOW COST COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY Appointments are available all through the year with Qualified Psychotherapist Breda Kearney. (Anxiety / Stress, Depression, Self Esteem, Relationship Issues, Assertive Communication, General Counselling) Contact Breda on for details. 9

10 IBALANCE COUNSELLING offers community counselling including: IBalance Mental Health Therapies like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) and other evidenced based interventions for people who are experiencing distress. Crisis Support for those times when things just get too much. Bereavement Support. Mindfulness Therapies for people who are experiencing challenges, loss and stress in their lives. Relationship Therapies for people who feel a significant relationship is not working as well as it could. Whole Family Supports for people who have difficulties in their family Mediation where we provide a neutral 3rd party perspective and help to form a plan that is acceptable to all parties. 11 THE FAMILY CARERS IRELAND is located to the CDP on the first floor. The Family Carers Ireland is Ireland's national charity for and of Family Carers in the Home. Their mission is to provide Family Carers with emotional and practical supports; to promote the interests of family carers and those receiving care in the home through effective partnership, lobbying and advocacy and to gain recognition and social justice for carer s invaluable contribution to Irish society. 12 KERRY EDUCATION AND TRAINING BOARD runs a variety of interesting courses and activities that are of great interest and value to the community at large. Not only are these courses a great way of learning and acquiring new skills, they are also a great way to meet new people and get involved in the community. On offer is QQI Level 3 courses in Internet Skills, Computer Literacy, Word-processing and Art. QQI Level 4 in Computer Applications, Information Technology and Art/ Drawing etc. Most courses are 16 weeks long. For those of you who want less time commitment and less pressure we have some taster courses in Basic Computers and Beginners Art. 13 OPEN ACCESS AT THE CENTRE The CDP Centre is open daily from 9.30am except Saturday & Sunday. Learners in courses are encouraged to use the training facilities to practice. A list showing the free time in the computer room for practice is available. Learners, tutors and staff are urged to keep safety in mind when using the centre at all times especially at night time. The centre facilities are there for all to share and enjoy. 13
