2 World Mental Health Day 2016 World Mental Health Day is an annual event. Aims: To raise awareness of mental health issues across the globe To mobilize efforts in support of mental health Mental health problems are an extremely important issue worldwide due to their impact on the human rights and quality of life of those affected and their families. This year s theme: Psychological First Aid (PFA)

5 OUR GOAL To provide timely psychological support service to reduce the emotional distress and sufferings of vulnerable people and carers, who are affected by disasters or emergencies, and to foster their adaptive functioning and coping capacity.
6 History of development Psychological Support Service 2004: Incorporated Psychological First Aid (PFA) knowledge into First Aid Manual 2006: Provided formal Psychological First Aid (PFA) training to volunteers; started Psychological Support Project with agreement with the Airport Authority (AA) 2007: Provide PSS in other emergencies through mobilization of trained PFAiders
7 Psychological Support Service Target Group Hong Kong communities affected by local and overseas disasters, emergencies or community crises
8 MHPSS in Emergency by HKRC Specialized services Focused, nonspecialized supports Eg. Referral to clinical psychologists from Hong Kong Psychological Society and other long-term follow-up (Occupycentral PSS hotline) Eg. Psychological first aid service Community and family supports Basic services and security Eg. Restoring family links (Haiyan Typhoon) Eg. Local disaster relief service works with SWD in relief distribution
9 From Evidence-based practice to practice-based evidence Emergency responders who received training in PFA reported significantly: better knowledge about disaster mental health; higher frequencies of helping behavior; and; better psychological well-being than responders who did not receive PFA training prior to the operation.
