1 Celebration for the 50 th Anniversary of HKPA Press Conference & World Physiotherapy Day Hong Kong 2013 with Embracing Global Health Ms. Priscilla POON President, Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association In commencement of Jubilee Celebration for the establishment of the HKPA, the HKPA & the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) organized a press conference on 1 Sep 2013 at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on a joint study on the health effects of using electronic devices such as computers and mobile phones among the Hong Kong people. In addition, kick-off ceremonies for the Jubilee celebration cum World Physiotherapy Day Hong Kong 2013 were launched on 8 Sep 2013 on the podium level of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Lots of exercise and fun were attained on a sunny and healthy Sunday noon! 2 educational posters are also produced and distributed to the primary / secondary schools and day elderly care centers. Press Conference on 1 Sep 2013 The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association have conducted a joint study on the health effects of using electronic devices such as computers and mobile phones among the Hong Kong people. Research results show that, in the total sample of 1049 people surveyed, 70% of the adults and 30% of school children and adolescents have reported musculoskeletal symptoms in different body regions in relation to the use of these electronic products. In response to the results to the joint research study, a press conference was organized on 1 Sep 2013 at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr. Grace SZETO, Dr. Billy SO, Ms. Priscilla POON and Ms. Nerita CHAN presented the study results, neck care and upper limb advice in using electronic device and demonstrated the stretching exercises for improving physical fitness. The message on appropriate and regular exercise in promoting physical and mental health was delivered in the press conference. Moreover, it was stressed that physiotherapists are experts on the structure of the human body system and pathological conditions. They are the ideal persons to promote, guide and prescribe exercises to members of the public, in order to achieve the specific goals of improving health and physical fitness. Page 1 of 15

4 Report from Ming Pao Kick off Ceremony for the Jubilee Celebration cum World Physiotherapy Day Hong Kong 2013 on 8 Sep 2013 On an early sunny but breezy Sunday morning dated 8 Sep 2013, the podium of the Hong Kong Polytechnic was overwhelmed by a group of dedicated & motivated physiotherapists working very diligently & creatively for the World PT Day cum the kick-off ceremony for the Jubilee celebration of the Hong King Physiotherapy Association. This function was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association, the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Fitness Center of the Community Resources Network, the Physiotherapy Concern & the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Union. Our peer Associations, the Hong Kong Asthma Society & the Hong Kong Arthritic Foundation Fund also acted as our supporting organizations. The event was advertised twice on the Headlines, promoted to the day elderly care centers, primary and secondary schools with 2 sets of promotional educational posters. The 2 sets of posters were aimed at publicizing the role of physiotherapy on the pain management in the elderly and the importance of regular exercise with Page 4 of 15

5 prolonged use of electronic device. With the great support from the specialty groups, local PT and PT students from the Physiotherapy Concern, more than 200 general public were attracted to the event. The specialty groups and the Physiotherapy Concern organized either performance at the kick-off ceremony or educational talks or health booths. The event started with a kick-off ceremony with speeches from Ms. Priscilla POON, Prof. Gabriel NG and Mr. Peter POON. Support was received with the attendance from the chairman of our supporting organizations, Mr. PW YAU and Mr. WK CHAN. The climax of the event is the on-stage performance from the Sports SG and exercise from the floor participants. That s really a good morning exercise for all of us! Various health booths and educational talks were followed in the afternoon with excellent participation rate and appreciation from the public.
