4 We won t give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect. The local Mind network is a complex and diverse group of organisations that greatly differ in size, services provided and many other characteristics. What unites local Minds is a shared set of objectives. Each local Mind is an independent organisation and registered charity with their own trustees. They affiliate to Mind (National Association for Mental Health) and the relationship is governed by the Community Partnership Agreement, which sets out obligations and expectations for local Minds and national Mind. Covering two nations The network of local Minds extends across England, Wales and the Channel Islands. In describing the network, local Minds are grouped together in to the nine regions of England that were previously used as part of the structure of local government, and Wales. Local Minds report on the areas in which they operate in terms of local authorities. 2 local authorities in England and Wales out of a total of 375 have a local Mind working in them. The local authority structures in England include areas where there are two levels, county and district. Local Minds can report at either of these levels at district level local Minds cover 63% of the population, while at county level 82% of the population is nationally covered. When these are combined we estimate the proportion of the population of England and Wales who can access a local Mind is 68% million out of 58.4 million people. England and Wales are divided in to 04 postcode areas and there is a local Mind presence in 86 of these, covering 87% of the population. The areas where there is not a local Mind presence include Leicester, Nottingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Liverpool, and large parts of some counties Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Surrey. With the exception of Surrey, most of the gaps in local Minds coverage are in the Midlands and the North of England. In Wales there is a local Mind presence in every local authority area. Working with Mind Every local Mind is required to be an incorporated organisation i.e. either a Company Limited by Guarantee, or a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). At March 207, 0 local Minds were limited companies, three were CIOs, and two were registered as charities in the Channel Islands (which has a different regulatory framework). The remaining 2 were unincorporated charities four of these were in the process of transition to becoming incorporated organisations and in three of those four, they were becoming CIOs. Incorporation CIO 2% Transition 3% Unincoporated 6% Channel Island 2% Ltd Co. 87% Mind Quality Mark All local Minds are required to meet the standards of the Mind Quality Mark. In addition, 88 (69%) local Minds reported that they held a total of 222 other quality marks between them. The most frequently reported quality mark was Mindful Employer, held by 45 (35%) of all local Minds. Impact Local Minds were asked to indicate the extent to which they agreed with statements about the effects of working with Mind. 6% of local Minds agreed or strongly agreed with the overall statement Working with Mind helped to increase our impact in 206/7. At a regional level there were variations in the response to this statement, ranging from 79% in the to 33% in Yorkshire and Humber. Responses to the six supplementary statements that related to different aspects of the operations of local Minds all produced lower positive scores. The aggregated responses to all seven statements produced a positive score of 5%. 5 Social media A high proportion of local Minds are active on social media platforms, with: 7% 75% using Twitter having a Facebook presence Local Minds were also asked to say what their greatest achievements and difficulties had been during the year. 95 local Minds responded. The main themes of achievements were expansion of existing services, winning contracts for new services, improved service outcomes, managing change, and survival. The greatest difficulties reported were about funding, losing contracts, meeting commissioners requirements, staffing issues, and organisational change. Across the network more than 6,500 people (in addition to trustees) give their time, skills and commitment every year. This adds up to over 320,000 hours of unpaid support for the works of local Minds. Demographic data Local Minds were asked to provide data about the numbers of people in their organisation who were in each of seven demographic categories. The question was How many people (unique individuals) in your local Mind were there in the following categories in 206/7? The categories used followed the Office of National Statistics (ONS) categories and the personal characteristics in the Equality Act 200. Below are some key points from the proportions for each characteristic/group data was received from. It should be noted that the response rates were low. Employed staff Local Minds employ 4,285 people, equivalent to 2,778 full-time staff. The size of the paid workforce in local Minds ranges from one person (0.8 FTE) to 203 (60 FTE). Staff costs account for 77,348,274 (according to published accounts) or just over two thirds of all expenditure. Age - more than 50% of trustees are in the 55 to 74 age group, while more than 40% of volunteers are aged 34 or less. Disability - 45% of trustees and 40% of service users experience disabilities that significantly limited their daily activities. Gender - 76% of staff and 70% of volunteers are female. Ethnicity - about 85% of staff, volunteers and service users were described as white, and this figure increased to 90% for trustees. 450, , , , , ,000 50,000 00,000 50,000 Service 426,370 6,587 Volunteers 4,285,004 People Employed Trustees People Local Minds are, essentially, groups of people working together to pursue the same objectives. In total there are nearly 2,000 people involved in the local Mind network, working with over 425,000 people who use their services. Trustees Every local Mind is an independent charity, and each has their own trustees, drawn from and living in the communities served by the local Mind. There are just over,000 trustees in local Minds. The number in each local Mind ranges from three to 5, with an overall average of just under eight. 38% of trustees report having lived experience of mental health issues and 9% - nearly one in five - of trustees use the services of their local Mind. 30% 25% 20% 5% 0% 5% 0% Age Trustees Staff Volunteers Service Gender Service Volunteers Staff Trustees 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 00% Female Male Other 60% 50% 40% 30% 20% 0% 0% Disability Physical disability Service Volunteers Staff Trustees Trustees Staff Volunteers Service Ethnicity 85.6% 84.4% 85.9% 90.8% White Mixed Ethnic Group Asian / Asian British Black African / Caribbean / Black British Other Ethnic Group Learning disability Other disability 75% 80% 85% 90% 95% 00% Local Minds 206/7: Report of the Annual Return 207 Local Minds 206/7: Report of the Annual Return

6 Leadership and change Local Minds usually have two main leaders; the chair of trustees and the chief officer. Leadership gender Chair Chief Officer Female 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 00% Male Nearly 70% of chief officers are female. For chairs of trustees just over 40% are female, and almost 60% are male. In the year following April 208, one in five chairs left their posts. This represents a 20% turnover in one year. In the same period 3% (one in eight) of chief officers had changed. Group % Changes from 206 to 207 The table below summarises the increases and decreases in the number of people involved in local Minds since 206. Many of these will be due to incomplete data, currently or in the past, but they do suggest trends and further areas for investigation. Trustees,004,092-8% The small reduction in the number of local Minds may have contributed to this. People employed 4,285 4,086 +5% This is in line with the increase in total expenditure across the network. Volunteers 6,587 6,860-4% A smaller number of local Minds provided data in the Annual Return. Service users 426, ,3 +25% This is probably partly as a result of improved recordning systems. Services Local Minds provide a total of more than,200 services. The number of services provided by each local Mind ranges from one to 24, with an average of about eight. Local Minds were asked to allocate each of their services to one of 80 different types, which in turn were gathered together into one of 2 groups. The number of services varies across regions, from 50 in the East Midlands to more than 250 in. Number of Services by Service Groups Community Support Talking Treatment Advice Advocacy Social Network Employment Skills Residential Workplace Wellbeing Crisis Services Campaigning Primary Care Trading Justice Service Number of Services by Service Groups The community support services account for almost half of all services and is the largest group in every region. They are usually services providing places and activities to enable people to live a suppported and more fulfilling life in the community, such as drop-ins and recovery groups. The number of services varies between different regions which is shown in the Spectrum of Services by Regions and Groups chart. A lower proportion of services in the and the North East are in the advice and advocacy group, and a higher proportion of services in Yorkshire and the are in the residential group. 10 Finance Income Using income to measure local Mind size, there are a small number of big local Minds and a big number of small local Minds. At the end of the 207 financial year, the average income across the network was 862,35 a 4.5% increase on 206. When local Minds are divided by there size of income into groups of 20, the largest 20 produce one half of the total network income. The smallest 20 produced just over % of the total. The largest individual local Mind s income was 5.9m, while the smallest was less than 35,000. When the size of the population in each region is taken into account, different variations arise. The North East had the highest income per head, although it had the smallest population and the third smallest income. had the second highest and East Midlands had the smallest income per head. Income per person in the General Population North East Wales Network Yorks & Humber East Midlands In recent years the number of local Minds has reduced, but the income, number of services, and number of people using services has increased. 12 Sustainability The published accounts of local Minds show a total of 55.4m unrestricted funds. Not all of these funds are available to the organisation to spend as it wishes. A lot of these are held in reserve in line with good practice in case they are needed for winding up costs and redundancies if the organisation has to close. Some amounts are also held for specific projects. For some local Minds the available funds are offset by significant Pension Scheme deficits. These can be long term liabilities as they limit the financial flexibility of a local Mind. Across the network they amount to over 5m. The total values of unrestricted funds in each region are in the Unrestricted Funds for 207 by Region chart.
