2 2-3 Welcome I am delighted to welcome you to our fourth Prometheus. Prometheus was one of the first programmes I attended when I joined as Head of School in 2013; and I am very proud to say it has gone from strength to strength. Making a difference We are committed to measuring the difference we are making to society through rigorous planning, monitoring and evaluation. This allows us to focus resources on areas where we can make the most impact. More information can be found at The 3rd Sector is a vital part of any healthy economy but one that is often neglected and as part of our ambition to pursue the University s goal of social responsibility, Prometheus provides a place where your key issues can be discussed and debated with peers facing the same concerns. From exploring the live and important current issues you face, to sharing insights into the latest business and management thinking, Prometheus invites a range of contributions from both our own academics as well as speakers from outside to lead the discussions. We very much hope that you will be able to continue these discussions after the event finishes. Also, this year we are particularly proud to have our University Chancellor, Lemn Sissay, join in the proceedings later this afternoon. Lemn is not only a recognised international poet but also a passionate campaigner on social issues. He is an outstanding asset to our University and he is really looking forward to meeting you at the less formal gathering later on to talk about his work he will also perform some of his poems and share his thoughts on their inspiration. I very much hope that your two days will be a useful and enjoyable experience and it will benefit both you and your organisation. Please continue to encourage more of your colleagues to come along to Prometheus 2018 next year. Professor Fiona Devine, OBE FAcSS FRSA Head, Alliance Manchester Business School Prometheus: The vision Prometheus has grown out of Alliance Manchester Business School s ambition to engage with all sectors of the economy. Our vision is to see the 3rd Sector recognised as a crucial part of any healthy economy, identifying and serving the needs of the community. The contributors to this year s event are experienced and knowledgeable in their respective fields and share in the desire to see the 3rd Sector rise to the challenges faced by people both here and overseas to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.
3 4-5 Speakers Chief Executive, Directory For Social Change Debra has worked in charities for over 30 years. Amongst numerous other roles she is the co-founder of the Small Charities Coalition. She is a prolific speaker and author of several books and is particularly well known for her Last Word Column in Third Sector magazine and her seminal book for charity CEOs It s Tough at the Top. Jon Rouse Chief Officer, Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership Jon was appointed as Chief Officer for the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership, in July 2016, to co-ordinate the delivery of Greater Manchester s strategy for the transformation of health and care services, Taking Charge Together, as part of the wider devolution plans for public service reform. Sir Stephen Bubb Director, Charity Futures Sir Stephen is the director of Charity Futures, a project that promotes better charity leadership and governance. He was Chief Executive of the charity leaders network ACEVO (Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations) for 15 years until spring Dr Noemi Sinkovics Lecturer in International Business and Management, Alliance MBS Noemi s research and teaching is focused on responsible business, social value creation, as well as theoretical and practical aspects of entrepreneurship. We are pleased to be welcoming Noemi back to Prometheus for the third time. Sir Stephen Bubb Dr Nick Clifford Ben Cooley Dr Nick Clifford Senior Fellow, Public Policy and Management, Alliance MBS Nick specialises in designing and delivering executive education programmes; his doctorate research was into corporate organisational change. Dr Rob Macmillan Centre for Voluntary Sector Research, Sheffield Hallam University and Co-Chair of the UK Voluntary Sector Studies Network Rob has been researching aspects of voluntary and community action for around 20 years in collaboration with other academics and researchers, policy makers and funders and with key voluntary and community organisations. Ben Cooley CEO, Hope For Justice Ben co-founded Hope for Justice in the UK in 2008 to bring an end to modern slavery and human trafficking. He rapidly grew it into a multiaward-winning charity with strong links with governments and police forces, with a mission to bring an end to modern slavery by rescuing victims, restoring lives and reforming society. Lemn Sissay MBE Chancellor, The University of Manchester Lemn Sissay is an award-winning writer and broadcaster. He is associate artist at the Southbank Centre, patron of the Letterbox Club and the Reader Organisation, and ambassador for the Children s Reading Fund. The Sissay PhD Scholarship for Care Leavers, the first of its kind, has been running for six years. He regularly reads on stages and in universities across the globe as an inspirational speaker and poet. Caroline Fiennes CEO, Giving Evidence Caroline is one of the few people whose work has appeared in both The Lancet and OK! Magazine. Business & Community Worker, Test Valley Community Services Phil has spent 30 years in children and families social work in the UK and New Zealand. Caroline Fiennes Jon Rouse Dr Noemi Sinkovics Dr Rob Macmillan Lemn Sissay MBE
4 6-7 Timetable DAY ONE: WEDNESDAY 4 OCTOBER DAY TWO: THURSDAY 5 OCTOBER Welcome by Professor Gerard P Hodgkinson, Deputy Head of Alliance Manchester Business School Welcome The devo-experiment: Devo-Manc offers a huge opportunity for doing things radically differently The 3rd Sector now recognises that not-for-profit enterprises are essential to provide for future community services leading from the bottom upwards Tea / coffee break Jon Rouse, Chief Officer, Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership Business & Community Worker, Test Valley Community Services The politics of voluntary action is becoming increasingly contested - there are changes happening in the relationship between markets and the 3rd Sector; capacity building in the 3rd Sector is leading to critical changes in the overall social infrastructure of society City region conurbations are developing a completely different analysis of where constraints to change lie; tackling constraints to social enterprise is a better way forward than encouraging social entrepreneurialism. Rob Macmillan, Centre for Voluntary Sector Research, Sheffield Hallam University and Co-Chair of the UK Voluntary Sector Studies Network Noemi Sinkovics Alliance Manchester Business School In it s first year Charity Futures has investigated the key issues of the 3rd Sector in the UK - where are the things pointing now? Lunch rd Sector Skills, Knowledge and Experience Workshop One: Capturing the contents of the room from within the room. Sir Stephen Bubb, CEO, Charity Futures Co-led by the School and members of the Advisory Group to Prometheus Tea / coffee break Working at the level of the city region, 3rd Sector organisations need to recognise the challenging opportunities that exist to develop alternative models for community development that capture the social assets contained across diverse urban areas which existing structures ignore Lunch Chief Executive, Forever Manchester Tea / coffee break The 3rd Sector has the legitimacy to model structural transformation of public services - the experience of Hope for Justice in tackling modern slavery and human trafficking onwards Wrap up the first day of Prometheus Networking, canapes and drinks. Hosting Prometheus in our own back-yard! The University s strategic goal to achieve excellence in teaching, research and social responsibility. Ben Cooley, CEO, Hope for Justice Nick Clifford, Senior Fellow, Public Policy and Management, Alliance MBS Lemn Sissay Celebrated author, poet, activist and Chancellor of the University of Manchester The sky is falling in said Chicken Little (attrib). Perspectives on the Future of the voluntary sector. Alternatives to a current thinking on the role and purpose of a 3rd Sector Charitable giving will only flow from the presentation of sound evidence. Improvement in the system of collecting evidence across all charities and philanthropic organisations is necessary in attracting new donors Tea / coffee break rd Sector Skills, Knowledge and Experience Workshop Two: Where has this led us and what should be our next steps? Event closes Chief Executive, Directory of Social Change Caroline Fiennes, Founder and Director, Giving Evidence Co-led by the School and members of the Advisory Group to Prometheus
