3 Welcome At Shaw Trust we are a diverse group and our ambition of helping to transform the lives of one million people means we do not conform to a single service style or sector. Our 3,500 colleagues and 1,000 volunteers work with absolute commitment and passion to ensure every child, young person and adult is given the best support and services for their needs. I am proud to lead Shaw Trust, one of the top 25 charities in the UK. Shaw Trust started 35 years ago to support disabled people, today we provide truly life changing services to people from all backgrounds and abilities at every stage of their lives. 4 About us Shaw Trust is a charity helping to transform the lives of one million young people and adults each year. Our 3,500 staff and 1,000 volunteers work across the UK and internationally, supporting people to develop their potential and live independently. Our specialist services help people gain an education, enter work, develop their career, improve their wellbeing or rebuild their lives. As a charity we add value to every service we deliver by investing back into the people and communities we support. Shaw Trust is one of the largest charities in the UK. Comprising Shaw Trust, Prospects, Ixion and Shaw Education Trust, we use our 75 years combined experience to support people to achieve their goals. 4

6 Shaw Trust at a glance Shaw Trust is one of the largest charities in the UK. Its purpose is to help to transform the lives of one million young people and adults each year. 1,000 volunteers donated 180,000 hours of their time to help Shaw Trust transform lives last year. 40+ extra-curricular clubs and activities run in any one week across Shaw Education Trust s 11 academies. Last year, 4,580 young people were educated in Shaw Education Trust academies. 6

7 Shaw Trust at a glance Each year Prospects inspires more than 500,000 young people and adults to develop their potential. Prospects supported 28,016 people into work in Ixion has supported more than 12,000 unemployed people start up and sustain their own businesses. Ixion has a Grade 1 (Overall Outstanding) for their learning and skills work. 7

8 What we do and how We provide joined-up services for individuals, government, local authorities, combined authorities, employers and stakeholders including clinical commissioning groups and NHS Trusts. Our work focuses on seven areas: Employability. Learning and skills. Justice. Children s services. Education. Charitable services and enterprise. Community health and wellbeing. We provide high-quality, blended and flexible support using evidence-based approaches, tailored to meet people s needs across the UK and internationally. Our approach combined with our detailed knowledge of national, regional and local labour markets ensures skills gaps are addressed, delivering longlasting benefit to the people we work with as well as employers, partners and communities. Ixion provided me with a real opportunity to start my career. I ve recently been promoted to skills administrator. Shae 8

9 What we do and how We work with young people and adults to help them: Move towards, and into, sustained meaningful employment. Move out of poverty. Gain an education, training and qualifications. Move towards rehabilitation, social integration and inclusion in employment and local communities. Improve their health and wellbeing. Transition to adulthood, and achieve their full potential. It s the combination of our charitable heart and our business brain that sets us apart. As a charity, we add value to our services by investing back into community projects through our social enterprises and national volunteering scheme, and by establishing hubs that bring communities together. We also have a number of retail shops around the UK which raise funds to add to our services. To achieve our goal we work with like-minded organisations and scale up our activities to extend our reach. 9

10 Who we work with We support people during every stage of life, from pre-schoolers to those preparing to retire, and treat the young people and adults we work with as individuals. The support they receive is tailored to their needs, either in a classroom, a residential care home, in our local communities, in custody, at a hub centre, at a conference or with an employer. We help people on a one-to-one basis and in groups, and offer support virtually too. The settings and formats may change but the compassion and humanity we show the people we work with, some of whom are the most vulnerable members of society, remains the same. To understand, discover and develop potential, we listen and learn from people, ensuring we are informed by what works well and is sustainable. 10

12 Our people As well as helping to transform the lives of the young people and adults we work with, we want to enrich the lives of our colleagues and volunteers. More than 3,500 people work across the Group from the north of Scotland to the Scilly Isles, and from Aberystwyth to East Anglia. Our employees share a passion and determination to deliver excellent services. We reward that passion and determination with opportunities to advance and improve through accredited and on-the-job training. Our wellbeing and welfare programmes support our colleagues as more than just workers, and our employee engagement work gives colleagues a voice at all levels of the organisation, so they are heard by our most senior managers and trustees. By supporting our diverse team which reflects those we work with and investing in our communities, our services deliver exceptional social value, reducing reliance on statutory services and cost to the public purse. 12

14 Our people My pride in Shaw Trust is rooted in three things. First, I am proud of our ambition which aims to see us helping at least a million young people and adults across the UK to transform their lives for the better, every year. Secondly, I am immensely proud of our people staff, volunteers and Trustees whose dedicated commitment to that mission gives me confidence that we will meet the goal. And finally, I am proud that we are able to achieve this as a modern charity a twenty-first century enterprise with a human heart and a business brain where every penny of every surplus that we generate is reinvested into the communities in which we live and work.
