I appreciate the extra effort you made to come learn more about a very important issue affecting us all. I admit that just a short time ago child sexual abuse was not on my radar screen. I thought that it was just something we occasionally heard about in the news and isn t that terrible? And then I met (insert name). When I learned the statistics I was shocked. 1 in 10 children sexually abused before their 18th birthday! I went from disbelief to outrage. When I learned about the devastating emotional and financial affects I realized that we as a community must stand up and do something about it. Fortunately efforts are underway and you being here today will ultimately help us respond as a community. I am so happy to be here today with (insert name) and will let him/ her share with you some important information on why this issue needs our attention and involvement. FAQs What is the source of 1 in 10 stat? D2L conducted an exhaustive search of credible sources of child sexual abuse prevalence rates. From a cohort of 6 studies, a prevalence rate of 7.5%-11.7% was derived. From that D2L cites 1 in 10 children are sexually abused before their 18th birthday. The full paper can be read at Why is Stewards only for adults? Is there a child focused program? D2L believes that adults are responsible for the safety of children. Stewards of Children teaches adults about the problem of child sexual abuse and the steps they can take to reduce the risk. D2L does believe that talking to children is an important step in prevention as indicated by Step 3, Talk about it. At this time D2L does not have a training for children. How do I host a facilitator workshop and what is the cost? In order to host a Facilitator Workshop, there must be a minimum of 10 attendees at $350 each, which can be paid for by the organization or by the participants themselves. The host organization is responsible for instructor accommodations and travel expenses. D2L hosts facilitator workshops all over the country every month. Individuals interested are welcome to register for any open workshops. What are important elements of a good prevention policy? Prevention policies should be implemented to protect the children in your care, protect your staff and volunteers from potential allegations of abuse, and to protect your organization from liability. A good policy includes Screening, Supervision, Reporting Procedures and a Response plan. Is Stewards of Children available in other formats and languages? Yes. Stewards is available in a facilitator led version as well as an online version. Stewards is also available in Spanish. Is Stewards of Children approved for continuing education units? D2L maintains two national CEU approvals for Stewards: NASW (social workers) & NBCC (certified counselors). Other CEUs available vary from state to state. 5 Understanding Economic Impact The Economic Burden of Child Abuse Researchers working with the CDC recently determined that the lifetime cost per substantiated case of child abuse + is $210,000. This includes immediate costs, loss of productivity, and increased healthcare costs in adulthood. Child sexual abuse costs the US $124 billion each year. Economic facts are based on a study completed by the CDC. I have seen this video several times now, and it still moves me every time I hear these powerful stories especially when Marilyn, a former Miss America, talks about how her mother didn t choose to stop the abuse at the hands of her father. These stories are tragic for the survivors and stirs emotion in all of us. But did you know that child sexual abuse affects us all regardless of whether we have a personal connection to the issue? Every substantiated case of child sexual abuse not only causes emotional pain but also costs our community real dollars. We have put together a short slide show to illustrate this harsh reality. Call to Action So what are we doing to make sure that children in our community are never harmed from sexual abuse? Well at (insert organization name) we are committed to prevention, but we can t do it alone. The entire community needs to be involved. To help educate people about CSA we have chosen Darkness to Light s Stewards of Children adult prevention program. This program, supported by a network of facilitators, gives adults the tools and resources to help better protect not only kids in their organizations but also their own kids. Stewards is an evidencebased program, so we can feel confident that attendees leave with increased knowledge. To make sure that we are impacting social change we have set some initial goals. How many of you are familiar with Malcolm Gladwell s book, The Tipping Point? This theory proposes that only a small number of people in any community adopt an idea or behavior that it can spread like a virus and actually create momentum towards social change. So with this in mind, we are proposing to train 5% to create this momentum. Our tipping point goal here is (insert #). To help us reach this goal several community partners have stepped up. Our coalition consists of (list a names or types of orgs). The (insert coalition name) is working with youth serving organizations, parents, faith centers, youth sports, and schools to train staff and volunteers. We focus on these groups because these organizations are where our kids spend most of their time. Our initiative is on solid ground, but the work does not end until every child is free to grow up healthy and whole. So I ask you...is it worth it? In the words of the great Dr. King, Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. I hope you will join us in protecting thousands of children. 7
