This is when they realized that something has to be done to preserve the culture and tradition and pass onto younger generations. This is of significance, as it would help to maintain our culture and identity while becoming Canadian. With this in mind, Canadian Newa Guthi was established on September 18, 2005, the day of Yanyapunhi, the festival also known as Indra Jatra in Nepal. In addition to preserve the Newa culture and tradition, Canadian Newa Guthi (CNG) has broader objectives to serve overall Nepalese community. The main objectives are: To sustain and develop the socio-economic Guthi - Newa Social System Guthi is a system that has been a part of the Newa social system in the Kathmandu Valley since the 5th century BC. The Guthi system is a trust where land is donated to the trust. This land is then tilled upon by members of the local community, and the revenue generated is not only a source of economy for the community but is also utilized to undertake various works within the community such as restoration of temples, rest houses (pati), priest houses (math), stone water spouts (dhunge dhara) and so on. This revenue is also used to carry out various festivals, customs and rituals. It was the system that engaged the local community in terms of not only tilling the land but also engaging a group of people such as masons (dakarmi), woodcrafters (shilpakars) and helping them to develop their skills. As such, the Guthi system helped to uplift the local community economically through the revenue generation and also provided a framework within which the local community could protect their tangible and intangible culture, enabling them to protect their very identity. Donation of a land to the Guthi is considered to be a very good deed and is believed to have religious merits according to Nepalese culture. Historically, kings and the royals as well as local people would donate land to the Guthi with the belief that it would bring spiritual deliverance for seven generations. Donation of land to the Guthi was also a symbol of status in society and was highly regarded. Furthermore, another reason for endowment was to prevent the State to confiscate property as it was considered a great crime to confiscate Guthi land. All these reasons helped in the pooling of land within the Guthi system thereby generating regular income and to undertake various activities. and professional capabilities of Newa community as well as the overall Nepalese communities living in Canada Read more on page 12 The Guthi system was basically associations formed by groups of people based often on various castes, which were in turn formed in the past based on occupations. Guthi existed for the Gods, the living and the dead and all activities concerning these three themes were carried out by the members of the Guthi. Although most of the Guthi system is now slowly diminishing due to changes in the social structure of communities and more so due to significant changes in the past fifty years such as the nationalization of the Guthi System and land reform campaigns, most Guthis do still exist although the activities that they conduct may have diminished considerably. The Guthi system is therefore integrated into the social structure of the communities and hence was not only successful but also highly sustainable. It is a system like no other in the world and can be highlighted as a model of a system that worked not only to preserve tangible but also intangible aspects of culture within the Kathmandu Valley. 1

2 Message from CNG President, Mr. Prakash Lal Pradhan Dear Guthiyar, Nepalese community members and friends, It is our great pleasure to inform you that Canadian Newa Guthi (CNG) is celebrating its tenth anniversary on September 6, CNG was established on September 18, 2005 with a concept of Guthi fundamentals, aiming to preserve and sustain Newari tradition and culture along with creating a platform to develop socio-economic and professional capabilities of Nepalese community living in Canada. Since its establishment, we have been organizing Samaya Baji Picnic, Mha Puja and recently, Yomari Punhi. At CNG, we believe that conducting community-oriented programs will help grow Nepalese community. Realizing this very fact, we have been organizing programs like public health awareness program, free tax filing clinic, youth empowerment session, newcomer support program and so on. Moreover, we have also been extending our services like health information sessions and free tax filing clinic to Nepalese origin of Bhutanese community living within GTA, Canada since With generous help from Nepalese community along with other well-wishers outside the community, we collected over $22,000 in partnership with Canadian Red Cross to help victims of recent disastrous earthquakes occurred in Nepal on April 25 and May 12, Similarly, we joined hand with Dr. Dybesh Regmi to collect medical supplies for the earthquake victims of Nepal and shipped nearly 400 kg immediately. The mobilization of resources to help earthquake victims in Nepal was a rewarding experience. We are proud to bring you this newsletter with our activities updates in last 10 years. We also published annual pocket diary and wall calendar with important information relevant to Nepalese community for easy access to information, such as, CNG activities, dates of Nepalese and Newari cultural and traditional events, lunar calendar. Recently, CNG has started a research study in collaboration with Brock University to assess socio-economic and health status of Nepalese residing in GTA. Once completed the findings will help to assess needs unique to our community. We are proud to inform you that we conducted Newari language teaching/practicing session for a professor and scholar of University of Toronto. On behalf of CNG and its members, I am extremely pleased to honour women members of CNG for their outstanding contributions to bring this organization to current stage. It is noteworthy that without their kind support and cooperation it was not possible to organize CNG s activities regularly. 3 CNG in the Community In addition to its own activities, CNG has also actively come forward to support other organizations activities to strengthen the Nepalese community. CNG participated in the Himalayan Mela organized by NCCS and presented traditional newari dance called Jyapu and Jaypuni in 2008 and Apart from these cultural programs, CNG has also participated in other socio-cultural programs organized by various other Nepalese and non-nepalese organizations on regular basis. CNG is also proud to be the first community organization to fully support and endorse NRN-Canada membership among all Nepalese community families living within GTA. During its 3rd Annual Samay Baji Picnic held at Centennial Park, Toronto in 2008, CNG hosted a platform and encouraged the participants to drive membership initiative. CNG is an organizational member of the NRN- Canada since In 2010, CNG General Secretary Mr. Bimal Man Shrestha, in close coordination with former Vice President Mr. Pradeep Lal Shrestha, translated the basic HIV/AIDS information into Nepalese language for the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention (ASAAP). This is the first ever official publication in Nepalese language by a registered non-governmental organization working in the field of health & welfare in Canada. This is one of the biggest achievements for CNG - making HIV/AIDS information more accessible to all Nepalese living in Canada. In addition, CNG also submitted similar Nepalese translation of The signs & symptoms of Heart & Stroke to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. CNG recently submitted Nepalese translation of Diabetes information to Canadian Diabetes Association. Similarly, CNG has supported a personal need base donation in medical emergency to Mr. Chhatra Bahadur Kayastha in Nepal and Goma Yakami in Sakachewan, Canada. CNG provides this kind of assistance in case to case basis. 4 Canadian Newa Guthi`s Major Programs in Last 10 Years 1. CNG Meetings Regular Meeting Canadian Newa Guthi (CNG) has been conducting monthly meetings regularly from the beginning as a part of effective operation mandate. CNG has a culture of conducting meetings in it s executive member s residence every month. Starting from 2012, Toronto Chapter members have also participated in hosting the meetings to show unity. Taking turns in hosting the monthly meetings help distribute responsibility equally among the members. The hosting member arranges all logistics for the meeting. CNG believes that this culture strengthens the relationships and also provides opportunity to meet family members, which is also a base of Guthi system. CNG Meeting in Progress Women Participation in CNG Meeting Outdoor Executive Meeting CNG has also been conducting outdoor meetings once a year during summer. In 2015, the potluck meeting was conducted at Centennial Park on July 26, Annual General Meeting CNG conducts Annual General Meeting (AGM) every year AGM was held on April 18, 2015 at Bharat Mata Mandir, Brampton. CNG refreshes its executive body through election every two years. Last election was conducted in 2014, which formally created Toronto Chapter to help expand its activities in Toronto. CNG has a plan to expand its chapters in other cities too. In AGM 2015, the general secretary; Mr. Bimal Man Shrestha presented status of all past and present, future potential activities. Similarly, on behalf of Toronto Chapter, Mr. Uttam Kumar Makaju, Vice President and Chapter, presented a report of all activities of the Chapter. 2. Mha Puja (Self Worship) Mha Puja is a major program that CNG has been organizing every year. Mha Puja is a very unique Newari festival of self worship that falls on Newari New Year s day based on lunar calendar. Mha Puja is a part of Tihar, one of the greatest festivals in Nepal. Tihar is a five days festival - first day worshiping crow, followed by worshiping dog on 2nd day, goddess Laxmi (also known as the goddess of wealth) on 3rd day, Mha Puja on 4th day and ending on Bhai Tika day, when all brothers are blessed by their sisters for long and healthy life. Last year, on Friday October 24, 2014, CNG celebrated its 10th annual Mha Puja and Nepal Sambat 1135 with various programs at Brampton Tower, Brampton. Nepal Sambat was started by a businessman Mr. Shankhadhar Shakhwa in 879 AD by clearing all the debts of the Nepalese citizens when Nepal was ruled by king Raghav Dev. Mr. Uttam Makaju, Vice President CNG, highlighted the importance of Mha Puja and its procedures prior to start of the Puja. Mha Puja is generally performed within the close family members group every year. The Mha Puja and Newari New Year Nepal Sambat 1135 program was made more lively and enjoyable by the performances from Mrs. Indira Shrestha with Newari Jyapuni dance, Mr. Uttam Makaju with Newari and Nepali songs, Mr. Surendra Lal Shrestha with Newari Jyapu Baja Dhime, songs by Mr. Gobinda Ghimery and Mr. Rikesh Shrestha. CNG family members play a vital role to make Mha Puja program a grand success 4

5 every year since its inception in It elements like protein, vitamins, carbohytakes a great effort from the members, espe- drate and very specific Newa cuisine. Com cially executive and chapter members, to organize the event. 3. Samay Baji Picnic issues prevalent to South Asian communities. Due to unique lifestyle and food habits, South Asian communities are prone to a few health issues, such as, hypertension, heart stroke, diabetes, etc. CNG has organized the following health awareness programs: CNG has been organizing Samay Baji picnic since its inception in This is the most popular activity and well participated by Nepalese community living in GTA. Healthy Heart program in collaboration with Heart & Stroke Foundation Ontario Osteoporosis and Arthritis session It is believed that the system of Samay Baji came into existence after Newa people started settling in Kathmandu valley. Samay munity members of different ethnicities love to attend this event. Community members frequently ask CNG associates about the date and venue of this event indicating popularity of this event. in collaboration with Osteoporosis Canada and Arthritis Society Diabetes Awareness and Diabetes for Youth in collaboration with Canadian Diabetes Association Women s Health CNG focuses on ensuring the continuity Breast Cancel Awareness of uniqueness of the foods provided during the event meanwhile creating a platform to CNG has organized following few prounderstand cultures and build network by grams such as: introducing new faces, fostering and vitalizing Nepalese community in GTA. Baji is served to the family members and neighbors during the special worship to god. 4. Health Info Session It is also a public belief that distribution of CNG has been organizing varieties of Samay Baji brings fortune, good health and health related programs to Nepalese commu prosperity. Samay Baji includes a Bara (a pie made out of black lentil), Musya (dry soyabean fried), Lava (Garlic, both dry and green), Palu (Ginger), Tukanchha (mustard green leafy vegetables), Alu Achar (Potato pickle), Chhoyla (hot and spicy flame barbequed meat), Bodi (black eyed beans), Panchakwa (currey made out of five different vegetables and beans), boiled and fried eggs, fried fish and fruits. Healthy Heart program 1 (with Heart & Stroke Foundation Ontario) 2010 and Breast Cancer Diabetics (Canadian Diabetes Association) - Dr. Dybesh Regmi 4 Osteoporosis and Arthritis 2011 to We will continue to bring various health programs in future so that Nepalese community can benefit more. 5. Tax Clinic for Newcomers Canadian Newa Guthi has been conducting Free Tax clinics for last 5 years serving Samay Baji is a combination of different nity to bring awareness of common health newcomers and families with lower income 5

6 from Nepalese community and Bhutanese of Nepalese origin. Similar to prior years Master Mr. Surendra Lal Shrestha (2nd Runner Up, World Karate Champion 2000) During the program Mr. Uttam Makaju, then CNG Toronto Chapter, explained about origin of Yomari, its relation with environment, ingenuity of Yomari ingredients. Yomari is made up of rice flour in oval shape and filled with mixer of molasses and sesame seed, and steam cooked. It contains calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and many families were benefitted from the tax clinics this year as well. The participants expressed their gratitude for making this service available from the professionals who spoke their own language. Local Nepalese community organizations NCCS (Toronto) and NCNC (Brampton) also partnered with CNG and coordinated venues in Toronto and Brampton respectively to conduct the Free Tax Clinics. Free Tax Clinic service has been provided by CNG Joint Secretary Mr. Rabin Pradhan (CPA, CGA), Treasurer Mr. Rajendra Shrestha (CPA, CGA), Public Relation and Master Mr. Dhan Bahadur Shrestha (Black Belt in Shito Ryu Karate) coach the students ranging from children to adults in their center. 7. Yomari Punhi Yomari Punhi is a very unique and typical festival of Newari community. CNG has started organizing the festival since The first Yomari Punhi was organized with many more nutritious elements. Yomari means nice and yummy bread. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day around December, right after harvesting season in Kathmandu valley. Yomari helps to revive the energy lost during harvesting. It is also to be noted that full moon day in December is the longest night similar to longer shape of Yomari. Days get longer right after this festival. Similarly, CNG organized 2nd Yomari Punhi at Handi Restaurant in Gerrard Street, Toronto. In addition to the similar programs in 1st Yomari Punhi celebration, the participants were entertained with yet another newari musical instrument known as Dhime. Officer Mr. Naresh Tamrakar, Toroto Chapter Mr. Rodesh Shakya (CPA, CMA), Life Mr. Suman Rajkarnikar (CPA, CGA) and Toronto Chapter Mr. Nabin Shrestha. 6. Youth and Sports Activities CNG supported to establish Everest Shito Ryu Karate in Since 2011, Everest Shito Ryu has been conducting training sessions for youths and participating in local, provincial and federal level championships. Its students have won many titles and medals in various categories in championship events. Everest Shito Ryu has been helping the youths to keep active, stay healthy and learning defensive skills. It has also been actively contributing to CNG programs and events. various other entertainment activities on December 28, Several families participated in the event including children. The program commenced with a welcome note from Mr. Naresh Tamrakar, Public Relation Officer CNG. Mr. Tamrakar also coordinated and hosted this program at his residence. Speaking in the program, Mr. Bimal Man Shrestha, General Secretary CNG, emphasized on significance of this festival in Newari community and importance of passing them to next generation. He also informed that this is the first time for CNG to organize such program in Toronto and would be continued annually going forward. Information on significance of Yomari, it s nutrition value and timing of festival were elaborated for the children participants. In Nepal, children go around the neighborhood for collecting Yomari, generally in groups and singing specific song with folk dance, which somehow resembles with Halloween observed in North America. Recipe and preparation steps were also demonstrated to children. 8. Newcomers Settlement Service CNG Toronto Chapter organized a Welcome Session in Toronto for newcomers in Nepalese community. The objective of the session was to deliver important information relevant to newcomers as well as to provide platform to meet other family members from the community. Mr. Naresh Tamrakar, Public Relation Officer, started the session with his rewarding experience from the feedback regarding CNG website. Newcomers found our website useful and informative. Mr. Tamrakar also administers CNG website. Another Toronto Chapter Mr. Binod Shrestha welcomed the participants and assured that CNG would be happy to help 6

7 for further assistance. Newcomers Deepak Pokhrel and Shristy Dongol mentioned that as a part of information gathering before immigrating to Canada they used CNG website to get contact information. They contacted CNG executive members to gather important information before departing for Canada. They thanked CNG for all help they received before and after coming to Canada. 9. Effective Public Speech Training CNG Toronto Chapter organized Effective Public Speaking training session focusing youths from Nepalese community. The training was conducted at Scarborough making them learning friendly. A few participants brought up bullying issues and lack of physical activities in the school. We have learned that if given the opportunity the younger generation can express their genuine and constructive thought that school management would not have considered. CNG Treasurer Mr. Rajendra Shrestha also provided feedback to the participants on their speech. 10. Study of Socio Economic and Health Status of Nepalese in Canada with Brock University CNG is going to start a survey to collect socio-economic data of Nepalese community living in GTA. This is a collaborative study with Brock University, St. Catharines represented by Dr. Tom O Neil. Dr. Neil is an Associate Professor at Brock University and is also providing his expertise to this study. The study will cover GTA locations densely populated with Nepalese community. Once completed, it is expected that the finding news reached to Canada about the tremors and damages in order to raise fund to support the relief program. CNG mobilized its volunteers right away to carry out several activities. Some of them are listed below: Called for an emergency board meeting on April 26, 2015, right after the news reached Canada Opened relief fund for donation Partnered with Canadian Red Cross to raise the fund Sent two shipments of medical supplies to Nepal with the help of Dr. Dybesh Regmi Organized candle light vigil on May 8, 2015 by collaborating with Shopper s World in Brampton. Brampton City Mayor Ms Linda Jeffrey also participated to show her support Over CAD $22,000 raised by May 22, 2015 to get matching fund from Canadian government Civic Center. The training session was coordinated and facilitated by Public Relation Officer Mr. Naresh Tamrakar. The training session was broken into two parts. First part comprised of giving away training materials, discussing the basic components of effective public speaking and proving important tips and examples. During second part, all the participants were given opportunities to come to the stage and delivery their speech. The participants were asked to consider the training material discussed in the first part and use the tips provided. The topic given was What is your thought about your school and what can be improved. The participants were quick enough to put together their speech using the tips provided. Most of the participants talked about improving the environment in their school and could be used to assess types of programs required for further development programs focused to Nepalese community. 11.
