EI APPLICABILITY IN INDUSTRY By Prof. SHANKAR BHUSARI PROMOTER: BEHAVIOR TESTING & COUNSELING CENTER, SHIVAJI NAGAR, NAGPUR
History of Emotional Intelligence Michael Beldoch (1964) first time referred the term in his paper title as Sensitivity to expression of emotional meaning in three modes of communication Then this term strongly appeared in W. L. Payne s doctoral thesis in 1986 A study of emotion: developing emotional intelligence; self integration; relating to fear, pain and desire The term become popular with Dr Golman s book Emotional Intelligence Why it can matter more than IQ
Definition Emotional intelligence is the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves and for managing emotions effectively in ourselves and others. An emotional competence is a learned capacity based on emotional intelligence that contributes to effective performance at work. Emotional Intelligence is the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships. It describes abilities distinct from, but complementary to, academic intelligence, the purely cognitive capacities measured by Intelligence Quotient. (Dr. Goleman Page 317 of Working With Emotional Intelligence ).
Some Question in my Mind What is academic intelligence? What is emotional competence? What are our cognitive capacities? Is it possible to learn emotional competence? What extent EI factors are dissimilar from IQ factors? What part of EI factors are complementary to IQ factors? Is it correct to say that factors of EI are our abilities? Does emotional intelligence (EI) really contribute to effective performance at the job we do? Do we really differ in our capacity to recognize emotions of ourselves and emotions of others?
What is my hypothesis? Every human being has 5 basic and biological needs which motivates an individual to satisfy it and reduce the tension. Hunger (भ ख) Thirst (प य स) Sex (ल ग क) Sleep (न द) Survival (Security) (स रक ष )
What is my hypothesis? (Continued) Whereas there is another set of 5 motives stimulates tension within the individual. Also called as stimulus motives or psychological functions, Curiosity (ग ज ञ स ) Manipulation ( ड-त ड) Action potential (क र यक षमत ) Affiliation (स ब ध) Association (स त)
Acquiring Emotional competence is possible Sensory inputs are feeder to Thalamus, which is transmission center for incoming sensory information. Thalamus will send sensory information to either Amygdala or Cerebral cortex. Amygdala is the center of emotions and aggression. Cerebral cortex is responsible for processing sensory information, interpret it and produces rational or real thought. Sends such conscious thought to Amygdala. Amygdala responds into physiological, emotional, cognitive and behavioral action depending on what type of feeder information obtained. (Look at the Picture 1 & Picture 2)
Acquiring Emotional competence is possible (Continued) The response will be the BODY ACTION if it is generated through biological needs. The response will be the EMOTIONAL ACTION if it is generated when sensory information directly fed to amygdala. The response will be COGNITIVE ACTION when feeder is Cerebral cortex. And, The response is BEHAVIORAL ACTION which is generated through combined effect of matured thought and matured emotions.
What is Emotional Intelligence Scale? The scale measures EI and its components is called as EI Scale. This EI scale measures four dimensions, Self-Awareness Self-Management Social Awareness Social Skills Self Awareness & Social Awareness has 3 factors each, Whereas Self management and Social Skills has 7 factors each.
20 Factors of EI Scale (By Golman & Boyatzis & 1999), Emotional Awareness: Recognizing one's emotions and their effects. Accurate Self-Assessment: Knowing one's strengths and limits. Self-Confidence: A strong sense of one's self-worth and capabilities. Trust: Believing on future action of oneself and others. Impulse Control: Keeping disruptive emotions and impulses in check. Conscientiousness: Arrangement and accountability of one s and others emotions to take right actions. Adaptability: Flexibility in handling change. Achievement Motivation: Striving to improve or meeting a standard of excellence. Initiative: Readiness to act on opportunities. Optimism: Persistence in pursuing goals despite obstacles and setbacks.
20 Factors of EI Scale (Continue) Empathy: Sensing others' feelings and perspectives, and taking an active interest in their concerns. Service Orientation: Anticipating, recognizing, and meeting customers' needs. Political Awareness: Playing tricks in own surrounding to succeed without hurting mass members. Developing Others: Sensing others development needs and boosting their abilities. Influence: Using effective tactics for persuasion. Conflict Management: Negotiating and resolving disagreements Leadership: Motivated to do a better job, be a better person, work to achieve goals and lead people by example. Change Catalyst: Initiating or managing change. Building Bonds: Linking people with manageable emotions. Team Building & Collaboration: Working with others toward shared goals. Creating group synergy in pursuing collective goals.
Administration Handover the Answer Sheet to respondent. Write Name, Age, Gender, Organization, Category and Date Handover the EQ reusable inventory to respondents. Read the Instructions as bellow, People have different opinions regarding their various abilities, skills and competencies. Statements describing your competencies are given in inventory. Read each statement in inventory and write your response against corresponding number about How well the statement describes you in terms of 5 responses as bellow, Write 1 Write 2 Write 3 Write 4 Write 5 If the statement not at all describes you. If the statement describes you little. If the statement describes you moderately well. If the statement describes you well. If the statement describes you completely in totality. If the statement is not adequately describing you then choose the one which is closest to describe you. Please do not leave any statement unanswered. There is no write or wrong answer. You have to choose the statement which truly describes you.
Scoring Now look at the handwritten numbers at your answer sheet. Make a sum horizontally of handwritten numbers and write total sum in total column. For Example sum of responses of (one= 2, twenty one= 1, forty one= 4, sixty one= 3, Eighty one= 4, hundred & one= 3) will be = 17. The sum 17 is score of 1A. Makes such sum for factors from 1A to 20T. Now take your profile sheet. There are five columns having range of numbers Like 6 to 9, 20 to 21, 22 to 26, 27 to 28 and 29 to 30. You have to write the sum of corresponding factor in given column for the said range. For Example Your 1A score is 17. write it in column of a range of 6 to 19.
Scoring (Continued) Now calculate the score of Self-Awareness with score 1A= 17, 2B=20, 3C=19. (Self-Awareness = = 58 /3 = 19.33). This way calculate score for Self-Management, Social Awareness and Social Skills. Now sum up scores in score column and divide it by 4 to get EI score. Get your EQ by the formula (EQ = EI /23 x 100) Look at the Excel sheet where calculations are given for some of my clients.
Interpretation of Scores The score is interpreted for assessment, development and preparation of training modules for students and employees. The first key point is comparisons of scores of Self-Awareness and Self-Management and Social Awareness and Social skills. Self- Awareness and Social Awareness scores must be higher than Self-management and Social skills scores respectively. Level 3 (22 to 26) score has to be achieved by students age between years.
Interpretation of Scores (Continued) Level 4 (27 to 28)has to be achieved by the age between years. And by the age of years level 5 has to be attended by a person having high emotional intelligence. EQ valued of 80 and bellow will be consider as very poor. EQ values between will be Poor in EI whereas values between will be consider as Average EI. Above the EQ will be consider as Better (High) EI. Above 120 EQ is Very high level to be attended by responsible people of our society. However, while interpretation of EQ, age is critical factor.
Development & Training Modules Development of factors of Self-Awareness: One way is to prepare exercise on weak factors and train the person in classroom. Other way is to explain the component of EI and expose the person to various situations and then impart takeaways of consequences of the situation faced by the person. Training Module: This has to be developed by a team experts depending on needs of students or employee.
